Okay, I have a 17" PB but I'm flirting with the idea of ordering a dual g5.. so I was wondering, of all the users here at MacRumors who has the best total mac setup?
So I guess this is your chance to via for the unofficial MacRumors best rig title... Post your systems and specs. If you think this is a dumb idea please feel free to flame me...

I don't think it's a dumb idea, but it is very hard to judge. Apple kit is largly 'standard' (no mods like in the custom built PC world) so there will be many with the same setup. Also it's not just the kit, it's the layout, the desk, the chair....blah blah.
edit: BTW...DP1GHZ (Quicksilver) / 1GB RAM / 80GB + 10GB HDD / GF4MX 64MB  / SuperDrive / Dual 18" NEC LCD's :D / 10GB iPod / Logitech Optical Mouse. I can't be bothered to take a pic, it'd never win anyway :( :p

sorry. My 'setup' is soooo not elite its not even worth posting :)

Well, I've always posted this one - and I really liked the setup in my basement. It pains me to know that its no longer there....we had a flood and had to put drains in the floor, so everything got moved out. Moving to one of the bedrooms sort of became permanent - one day - probably in a couple years I'll have the room back to this configuration or something close. Plus a G5 or what ever my next machine is ;)

as for mine...
I have a loaded 17" 1GHz iMac & RevB 667 TiBook

Wacom Intuos II 9x12 tablet
Altec Lansing 3TB speaker system

My setup is pretty sad...an old coffee table my grandfather made before I was born with my PowerBook sitting on top. It'd be cool to have a basement setup, that pic was pretty nifty. Unfortunately, we don't have basements in Florida.

Well my current setup is a Dual/GHz/DDR PowerMac with 1GB or ram, 80GB IBM, 160GB WD SE, ATI9800, Superdrive, Lite-on 40125s 40x12x48.
Unfortuantely my weakpoint is outside the computer. I have an Apple CRT Studio Display 17". While it's very very nice it's small and is far from the latest and greatest.

I'll have to post a pic of the current space - its scary....:D
And my new setup is ok, but not as large - I had to put the drafting table in storage which really sucks.

I know that I have just an average setup, but I'm comfortable at the moment. The important thing is to be happy with what you have.
I would say that you cellar setup is a winner Mr. Anderson. What happened to cause the leak? Isn't there some kind of a permanent solution to prevent future leaks? :(

I think he moved it out before the leak luckily. I don't remember why it was being moved just the room it was going in wouldn't fit the drafting table.

That's a shame, that setup was pretty sweet. I bet it was one killer home office/workspace. It could be a killer Halo/gaming base, too :D

Arn posted a pic of his dual apple lcds.. I'm not sure if there were 2 20" or 2 23" screens, but that's pretty freakin awesome either way.
My own setup is decent I guess, but only 'cuz the 15" PB's have been in limbo for so long...
1Ghz TiBook 15" (obviously) w/ 1Gig RAM and that lovely Radeon Mobility 9000 graphics card. No superdrive though.
Crappy Mitsubishi 17" CRT for a second monitor.
Airport Extreme Base Station w/ Epson C82 hooked up to the USB port for wireless printing.
Apple keyboard and wireless logitech mouse for use at the desk.
Hmmm... I think thats all the goodies, at least the apple related ones.

I'm not much of a gamer - more interested in making things on the computer than playing on one.
The flooding supposedly has been fully contained - we'll see. The guys came over to do the work on Geekfest weekend, so that sort of created some problems.
Eye was there, he can tell you how bad it was ;)
Thankfully we never had more than wet rugs, no standing water.

That reminds me of about 3 years ago...a hurricane took part of the roof off our house and my PowerBook got a bit damp with the rest of my room. It survived without a problem, too! I wish I could say the same for my nice dark blue carpet...we had to rip out all of our carpets and pretty much replaced them all with wood flooring after that.
Once I get to school, I am playing around with a few ideas. I am getting a new 15" PowerBook when they become available and I want to get a wireless RF thingy to use my Pinoneer sound system for my audio, a nice iSight so I can talk/see my family while at school, and wireless router to connect my PowerBook, Xbox, and roommate's PC to a network for online multiplayer games. We'll see how much of that I actually do after stuff like books and all bleed my bank account dry.

Nah you're right.. even as posting the thread I had hesitation.. it might be dumb but we all can certainly embrace the mac nerdiness of "wow, thats an awesome setup.." So that's more the vibe I was going for, sorry for inviting any more agression to the forum than may have been needed.

I never saw any reason for flaming. It's just cool to see how others use their workspace/game station/computer setup. Just like some other threads where people have posted pics of their computers, cars, schools, etc. It's just cool to see the things that bind us together as a community, the cool systems we wish to have, or even get ideas for setups.

Hey if anyone wants to buy me a mac I'll be happy to replace that PC with a mac ;).
But as of now macs aren't affordable, so I am stuck with PCs.
Well, not exactly though. I have ~$2,500 saved up. Not sure what I want to do with it... I was gunna get a g5, but Im thinking I should just wait till I can't stand the PC anymore.
But to tell you the truth, I don't like macs much more than PCs. The main reason for this is because macs are hella expensive, and my parents are tight-wads.
But if someone wants to start a donation or just give me a computer, I would be happy to replace that PC with a mac ;).

I want one of those 10 LCD screens from 9X! I can't even image what it'd be like to play Halo on that thing...I just need like a 10 kilowatt surround sound setup to go wit it, along with winning the lotto to afford it! :D
The desk setup that Wes has is also really cool. That would be one of the reasons why a wireless mouse/keyboard setups would be sweet. It can be a real pain to get those cords to reach. I remember spending nearly 40 minutes trying to get that 50 some cords trying to reach the Dell I set up for my parents. For some reason, Dell makes all of their cords super shorts so when you try to fit it in your desk, your mouse cord is bearly there, and there are 3 more holes you had to drill into your desk unit to route the other cords through so it won't lool like a jungle. I love that about Macs because there are so few cords to deal with. A clean desk can go a long way with helping to improving your work enviroment.

My roommate last year stole the Steak n Shake sign from the drive through, a Taco Bell sign from the drive through, about 200 Chili's coasters, a glass mug from Chili's, a mug from Apple Bee's, the alcohol list from Chili's, the salt, pepper, napkin, and silverware from Roadhouse...and that's just the stuff I remember. I swear, you'll run into so many kleptomaniacs in college...my friend across the hall had about 500 toothpicks he stole from the cafeteria and just about everyone had silverware from there.

As for the wire thing, my sister's Compaq has 6 wires just connecting the monitor with its built in speakers into the desktop and another for the mic...the last I checked, Apple has one wire connecting the power, data, and mic all in one cord. I wish our Dell had longer cords...the power cord is seriously really short and the mouse is equally short to the point of being ridiculous. I guess that's what you get for cheaping out on the input devices an downgrading to the cheapest models...I can't wait to get my new PowerBook, I am going to try for a complete wireless setup. With bluetooth, I can have a wireless mouse, then I can have wireless internet and printing through Airport Extreme, then I'll have a wireless audio connection through the radio waves to connect from my PowerBook to my receiver. The only other wire to worry about is the AC adapter for when I have it plugged in. I've seen some technologies that even take care of that, but it looks like they will be a few years away. I saw one that is this power pad you lay on your desk that is powered and transfers the power to your stuff through a chip built into your stuff, then all you need to do is set your cell phone, your laptop, your iPod, etc on your desk and they automatically charge. I've only seen it work so far on a prototype laptop and cell phone, but the technology might be pretty cool in the future for a complete wireless workspace.

Heh. The only stuff I've ever borrowed are some old street signs and traffic lights/signs that I found while walking in the woods. I lived in Germany at the time. The signs currently grace the wall in front of my computer desk.

http://www.peskin.org/workspace-collage.jpg
Machine:
Power Mac G4/533, 1GB RAM, GeForce 2MX with 64MB, 40GB drive, 80GB IBM drive in a Pyro enclosure, The standard 8X CD-RW, iSub, Canon D646U scanner, LaserWriter 16/600PS (TCP/IP printing).
The 'Books (each has Airport/Airport Extreme respectively):
iBook 12.1" dual-usb Rev A 500MHZ G3, 640MB RAM, DVD-ROM, 20GB drive - you know the rest of the specs.
PowerBook 12.1" Rev A, 867MHZ G4, 640MB RAM, Combo Drive, 40GB drive - you know the rest of the specs.
It all comes together with a NetGear FS105 Fast Ethernet switch, a ZyXel Prestige 643 ADSL router back to my office (we're an ISP), and of course a Snow Airport Base Station.
The think different posters for inspiration.
What wouldn't fit in the first 640x480 is my guinea pigs (their cage is adjacent to the desk on the floor under where I took the picture of the 'Books). They like the little cubby shelves on the desk and they like to park it by the Power Mac for the warmth)

There's got to be things to put large numbers of displays together, like when you walk in to something like a Best Buy and they have a wall with like 25 TV's in a square shape, each TV is showing a small part of the overall picture, but if you look at all of them, they show the whole picture.

I've seen a big black box thing used to connect a large number a monitors together like that. I'm not sure how they work, if it's just one large monitor spanning device, but I assume if the owner of that setup had gotten ahold of one of those devices, that setting up all those monitors was simply a matter of plugging them all in.

My friend has a really nice Samsung plasma tv that has been nothing but awesome. They are pretty sweet sets now that the price has been coming down on them. I'm just a bit hesitant, though, since I've heard the average lifespan on plasma screens is pretty low, which makes me feel good about sticking with my 32" Samsung HDTV tube. (It just sucks having to move that thing, it's massive and weighs a ton)

well that flying sim thing is actually owned by a man named Steve Ferris. He and his monster flying rig was featured in this month's Maximum PC "Rig of the Month" section.
Says he runs Flightsimulator 95 on those and a freeware software called WidevieW. All those computers are networked together and each have independent graphics chips, but the WidevieW software allows the spanning of the graphics data to that each computer can display a different section on its monitor, in real time!
Sorry I cant get the article to you. Its too large to upload and once I drop the quality, the text is unreadable.

It was my present to myself for working 6 months of long hard nights on a windows xp migration project, not much fun I can tell u!
For the display and the 5.1 sound it came to approx. £5,500
The plasma was £5k from John Lewis, I could have got it cheaper online but I would not have got the 5yr warrenty that you get from John Lewis, and on an item like this I thought the warrenty was worth the extra expense.

£5,500 pounds isn't that much when you think about it.
If you have a 5 year warranty you'd expect it to last at least 5 years. That means it costs £1,100 a year. Per day that's only £3.01.
Not bad for something that you use everyday :)
