Forget it. They can bite me. The only way we'll ever get people to stop writing crap like that is to make it clear that it doesn't make us buy stuff.

I'm pretty sure I just read about a company that was sued for ads like that. by mimicking windows dialogue boxes they were duping consumers into going to their website and had to settle. I don't remember the company though.

Probably have to be one of the most annoying types of ads. I really wish that the people getting paid to host the ads would make a requirement that there be no flashing like that.

I know that there are a few sites that already don't allow them and I think MacRumors is one of them.....:D

Damn nasty Winows popup ads. I hardly ever see a single ad with my Mac, but with my sister's computer, they literally pop up out of nowhere when you just leave it on or do something else. After an hour, there are about 100 of them. I thought it was a program she downloaded (she downloads the most random junk) so I deleted a bunch of crap for her, but they never stop. It might be Kazaa or Hotbar or some other program, but she refuses to get rid of Kazaa and she doesn't want me to do a clean reinstall incase it is a virus since she doesn't want to redownload everything she has now.

I agree about MacRumors--hardly ever a popup and just one small one if there is one. I'd love to contribute and get a cool mug to become a "member" but they've sold out forever now. Ah well, maybe next time.

The P2P iMesh makes random popups happen in XP, I think that you have to uninstall it to get it to go away. It uses a service built into XP to pop up the ads from nowhere. See if she has iMesh installed and get rid of it if she does. Then They should stop, but there are a ton of other things that do that as well.

just download lavasoft adaware software, that will get rid of her problems you have with pop ups, then download kazaalite, instead of kazaa.

windows users are so ignorant, and MS has such bad user interface control, that many users probably think this is a genuine message... Or did, 'till they clicked it a few times. I've seen a lot of windows do a lot more idiotic things...

It was one of those stupid "warning: your computer is being attacked by hackers right now - click here to stop them" ads. :rolleyes:

Thanks, I'll have to check it out. Nothing seems to get rid of those popups. It's insane since a lot of the time, nothing is running and they just pop out of nowhere and collect until there are a few hundred windows that it chokes up XP and causes it to crash.

FreeSurfer MKII is a great popup blocker for the windows side of things. Used to use it all the time when I had my XP box... Im finding that the popup blocker doesnt work well if at all on Safari though..

Any recomendations? (and no i dont want to use Mozilla or Camino.)

i might use window, but i'm not a complete idiot (it's my parent's computer by the way. anyhow, i like windows. there's no computer problem daddy can't fix!:cool: ) anyway, i never click on anything that doesn't show up in the tool bar.

ok, you guys are really gonna love this, but i am also using aol:D and i don't get any popup ads. the computer i'm using has windows ME, and it's allright (for those of you who don't know, it's exactly the same as windows 95 thru 99 ;)) but our other two have XP and it gets popups all the time because of that stupid program it has.

yes, even windows has good versions and crappy versions.

My God, Windows ME was awful. Windows 2k is decent and I can tolerate XP when you turn everything off and make it look like 2k. The only big difference between 98 and ME seems to be the lack of DOS emulation through Windows and more frequent system instabilities.

I remember the days when ads for porn had fake scroll bars and I'd watch people scroll for more and BAM, suddenly IE multiplies windows faster than bacteria


The popups on XP (versus 95, etc) are just microsoft's expansion into the netbios world. Yes, allow popup messaging by default. Good one.
