Both are consumer products.

Yes, but there are millions more spotty 14 year olds who can afford a game compared to a phone.

It's a pointless comparision. You can say that the AirBus A380 ha a larger debut than Halo 3.

The one costs $50ish.

The other cost $600 at launch.

It really isn't something that you can compare.

Oh come on, I see what he's saying.

Both have high techie/"nerd" appeal. Both are long-awaited and have their fanboys.

maybe not a great comparison, but there is some common ground.

its not quite apples vs oranges, its more like oranges vs. tangerines. pretty close.

AirBus's is targeted towards corporations... shouldn't even come into conversations here.

Halo 3 and iphone are both mainstream consumer products.. good for the apple fanbois to see that it's not just their beloved apple that can steal all the spotlight with a product launch.

But if you've got the money you could order one from Airbus.
Like I said, rediculous comparisons.

How many people in the world has the money and the means to operate an AirBus? Ridiculous hypothetical situation.

They're completely different products competing in completely different markets.

iPhone vs. Nokia N series - yes!

Halo 3 vs. GTA IV - yes!

iPhone vs. Halo 3 - not a chance!

They're completely different products competing in completely different markets.

The same kind of people who camped outside for an iphone (which was stupid by the way..) are the same type of people who would be interested in Halo 3.

If I was to draw a Venn diagram for you indicating purchaser of either product, then the area of overlap for the two would be huge.

iPhone. Consider hype among professionals in the market for a smartphone + techie teens + pompus rich peeps wanting the latest thing. I think this exceeds the relatively isolated -- though intense -- hype among gamers for Halo 3.

I'm sure you could draw a Venn diagram highlighting that. And the same people are interested in the same jeans, shampoo and chewing gum. Your point is?

Marketeers and sales people go after the same crowd all the time, but they don't compare their sales with a product when it's in a completely different price range/market. Bentley Cars don't think to themselves, "Wrigleys sell millions of chewing gums every month, we should be selling millions of cars to those same people."

It really is apples and oranges...

The box that the halo 3 disc comes in is larger than an iPhone.

But the box the iPhone comes in is larger than a halo 3 box... but you need an xbox360 to .... nevermind.

the price of the two products are close enough to be considered apples to apples. A halo 3 kit ranging from $60 to $400 is only slightly more affordable than an a $600 phone. Even at $600, it is not so high that these illogical ppl can't put the phone on their credit card and pay it off month by month(or not pay it off). Did you see the ppl who waited in line for the iphone? about the same type of nerds as the ones who waited for halo 3.. a little bit more refined nerds perhaps..

Your comparison of chewing gum vs cars is nothing like a halo package that ranges from $60 to $400 vs iphone for $400-$600.

just a little tongue n' cheek for all the MS haters out there. Just when you're all cocky that apple pulled off some "second coming of christ" type of release with the iphone, MS manages even a larger world wide release.

First, halo 3 does not cost $400.

Second, halo 3 had preorders, iPhone didn't, which throws out the whole comparison.

And now you change the rules from the game vs. the iPhone to the console plus the game vs. the iPhone.

Let me have another go. What may have happened:

Bungie: "Thank ******* that's done. Now we can do something completely different."

Microsoft: "Thank ******* that's done. Maybe it'll help us shift an extra 500,000 to 1 million Xbox 360 units. Hopefully, they'll make another Halo..."

What probably didn't happen:

Bungie: "I wonder how the Halo 3 launch'll compare to the iPhones?"

Microsoft: "Halo 3 - that'll show Steve Jobs and his iPhone!"

Dude, they are selling a Halo 3 themed XBOX console.. for $399..

A stupid package with a halo helmet for $130

and finally a barebone game in a normal box for $60..

What probably didn't happen:

Bungie: "I wonder how the Halo 3 launch'll compare to the iPhones?"

Microsoft: "Halo 3 - that'll show Steve Jobs and his iPhone!"

Sure it could.. in the minds of the brainwashed fanbois, all the attention apple has been getting recently would suggest to them that apple is the new dominating force in the industry.. nothing like a little stupid video game to put the iphone release into perspective.

I don't normally laugh on forums, but ROFL! I'm picturing sinister lighting and a close up shot of Bill saying that.

Heys! there are more iPods sold than Xboxs!

And OP - Wii is outselling 360. If that rattles your cage ;)

Then what you're saying is that it is even more impressive that MS was able to gear up this much hype for a 3rd sequel to a video game that is considered overrated.

Personally I can imagine someone posting this kind of topic, but to then harp about it trying desperately to make a point instead of just hiding away is brilliant. This thread must not die.

Dominating force in what industry? It certainly isn't console games (or video games at all for that matter. They make, what, 4*?)

*: Chess, plus Solitaire, Brick, and the music quiz on iPods.

This is so stupid that I don't even know why I am bothering...

Another point you fail to consider is that people own more than one xbox360 game but usually only one phone. I wouldn't buy an iPhone on a whim but I might with Halo 3.

I am much more likely to buy Halo 3 because it is cheap and it might be worth a laugh but I would much prefer to have a nice new phone (iPhone or otherwise)

Halo 3 looks good, but I think it has been hyped way too much. Honestly, with the absence of an XBox360 in my possession, I am really looking forward to A. playing Halo 3 on my friend's 360 this afternoon and B. Microsoft's release of the creative license or whatever to allow MacSoft to port Halo 2 to OS X. :D

And the iPhone... I don't know, you can't really compare it to Halo 3... But I'd say the hype was just a bit larger. The iPhone was better than expected, so I'm really hoping Halo 3 (especially the multiplayer experience) is as good as it was chalked up to be.

Thank you in advance to the hard core gamers who stayed up until 4am for the initial distribution of the game. I appreciate your efforts to power through the game and promptly sell their copy to a local game store soon. Dunno what I'd do without you :D
