I want to start messing around with a Mac as my primary server, and I'm interested in the cheapest way to start. I'd like a 2002-era Quicksilver (because the 2002s were the ones that supported big hard drives). I don't care what the CPU speed is, or how much memory is in it, and it doesn't even have to have a hard drive. It does have to be cheap. Like wife-approved cheap.
Can anyone help me out, with a cheap, disused, possibly drive-less Quicksilver?

I've got a single proc 733 and dual 1 ghz.
The 733 is obviously cheaper. Make an offer.

Well I'll have to pass on the 733 because that wouldn't be a 2002 Quicksilver (see http://lowendmac.com/ppc/gigag4.html for what I'm looking for) with LBA support. And I don't want to pay enough to do justice do your dual 1GHz, that's too nice for me :)

Would you consider an 867?

If it's of the right series...can you give me the model number so I can check? Thanks.

I don't think that one has LBA support, I'll have to pass. Still looking.

it is not a 2002. but i've got it running a 250 ATA drive right now. Check out http://www.speedtools.com/ATA6.shtml as a solution.

I'd rather not be forced to partition the drive into 128GB + extra, nor use the older ATA controllers on that model. I know I'm being picky, but I have specific uses for this.
Let me be a little more clear about my price range here, because I've gotten a few PMs and I don't want to waste anyone else's time. I can't spend more than $200 on this. I'm looking at an 800MHz one on Craigslist that meets all my requirements for $175. All I'd have to do is add a little memory to it. That's the kind of thing I want; I don't want to spend $350 or whatever on a dual 1GHz or anything like that. I appreciate the offers, but I have to be really cheap about this.

I don't know if you are interested but I have something that may work for you, save for the HD space issue. I have a 400mhz (sawtooth, agp graphics) that has been unused at the house for the past year. I was about to list it, but was hanging onto it for someone at work who can't come up with the $$$. Because of its model, it will only recognize up to a 128GB HDD, but I have two in it that are both 160 GB, so essentially you have 256 GB storage. Ram I have (I thing, will have to check) 768MB, apple usb keyboard, the original hockeypuck mouse, and a logitech optical mouse. I'm not looking for much, less than the 200 you set as your limit, so if you are interested, let me know. I have run Panther, Tiger, and Tiger server on it without problems, but have Ubuntu Linux on it because I no longer have OS disks. Feel free to ask anything else if you are interested.

Where are you located? (so I know shipping costs) What is your timeframe for needing this? I may have a few coming my way... but not 100% sure how long yet.

Indianapolis area. No particular timeframe at all, I'll just pick something up if a good deal passes my way. I'm pretty happy with my Linux server right now. It would be a significant project for me to switch the file server functionality over to this Mac because I have a half-dozen drives totaling 2TB. Which means I'll be buying SATA cards, enclosures, etc. I just wanted to get one if I could and start playing with it.
I think I may have found one locally. I'll know later this week.
