Sorry if somebody's already posted this, but...

"According to reports, Virginia Tech placed the dual-2GHz G5 order shortly after the G5 was announced. Multiple sources said Virginia Tech has ordered 1100 units; RAM on each is said to be upgraded to 4GB or 8GB.

The real story is that V-Tech ordered 1300 PowerBooks, not G5's. This was confirmed by my department's Apple Educational Sales representative. PowerBooks are slow to come through, but single processor G5's have been shipping. Dual G5's are not shipping yet due to technical problems (software/hardware optimization). Read my post on "The First BROKEN G5's".

No, really. V-Tech did order 1300 PowerBook 1GHz models. I've heard NOTHING of a G5 order (and I would have been told by now, because I have numerous Dual G5 orders in for campus departments). I don't know what VT may have in mind as far as a "SuperComputer"; in fact, I'm willing to think that the Super Computer thing is made up entirely. Ever since the Dual 2GHz was released (and I checked Apple Educational Sales Web the moment the G5 was announced) there has been a consistent "September" release time-frame. Virginia Tech DID NOT place such an order for Dual G5's; you have to trust me on this one. Dual G5's are more likely being held back due to hardware issues.
You have to interpret comments from unreliable rumor sites like you would take my information. They are all a few degrees removed from the actual source, and information has probably been taken away and added. The only difference between these sites and myself is that I just happen to be a few degrees closer than they are.

Hmm... has anyone yet considered that they bought both G5s and Powerbooks? It's not like they'd try to make a big laptop supercomputer... they probably bought them for a different purpose.
