Ok, I need a hand here. I am looking for a specific word, and here is what I need.
If you take a franchise like Star Wars, and all the toys, movies, comics, games, books, websites, fans, conventions ect. What is the word used to describe all of those things as one. Star Trek is one also, and The Matrix is turning into one. Words that I know are not the one I am looking for include:
Franchise
Universe
Cult following
epic
saga
trilogy
Remember, it includes everything, even the fans themselves.

'The Force' would be a good one since that's a unique thing to the that universe. But I don't know if there is any single word that would work perfectly.

No, it's not 'the force'. There is a single, generic word that describes this kind of phenomenon. I just heard it a week ago or so regarding the matrix, and how it was turning into the next one. I can't for the life of me remember what that stupid word is though. Remember, the word is generic, and not specific to any one franchise. It can be used the same way to describe star trek, and now the matrix.

I always thought it was just dubbed "franchise." But, then again, you already mentioned it so it's unlikely that that was the word you were thinking of.

"milieux" might be the word, although I'm not at all sure thats how you'd spell it.

I don't know what word you heard, jethroted, but we could make one up that might be just as good. How 'bout.... franchiverse?

I was watching something a few weeks ago on TV about Harry Potter and they talked about the toys, games, movies...everything associated with it and they called it Franchise. I know that one has already been mentioned here, but I heard it used for Harry Potter.

Seriously, if the word you're thinking of hasn't already been listed here, whoever used it was either showing off or made it up. You have a lot of bright people here and none of them can figure it out. Anybody who talks over the heads of the MacRumors crowd has outsmarted himself into irrelevance.

Universe is too broad, and is too much of a general term I think.
Franchise I think really nails it because what is Star Wars, ultimately? A product that has been sold. (many many times in many many different ways, but a product nonetheless.)

I've been thinking about this one for two days now and i think the right word just hit me out of the blue: Microcosm
(there's an SAT word for ya, kiddies)
I think microcosm does a pretty good job of gettting across what you were describing

I still believe it's "franchise." As far as I know, the word "microcosm" is used when one smaller thing depicts society or the world as a whole.
Yeah, I just looked it up to double check and found this quote.
Ex. "He sees the auto industry as a microcosm of the U.S. itselfˇ± (William J. Hampton).
