Apple Lore Gathering 2003

Wired reports (http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,60217,00.html) on the Apple Lore gathering (http://www.computerhistory.org/applecelebration/) to be held on Saturday, Sept 13th, 2003.

Held at the Computer History Museum in California, the meeting is said to be bringing together over 1,000 ex-Apple employees, including Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple.

Beyond just a social gathering, the event is also an informational gathering, to document some historic events from Apple's past:

There will also be videotaped round-table discussions with dozens of former employees. The employees will be encouraged to reminisce about key events like the launch of the Macintosh, or working on QuickTime, Apple's pioneering multimedia platform. The museum is also taping the recollections of key employees, some of which will air at the event.

Key figures expected to attend include Steve Wozniak, Guy Kawasaki, Mike Markkula and a video interview from Jean-Louis Gassée (Founder of Be, Inc.). Steve Jobs will be unable to attend due to Apple Expo Paris.

Apple seemed to have a lot more charm in the 'old' days.

Wow, Jean-Louis? There's a guy I've always wanted to meet. Sent him an e-mail a few years back when Be was still in business telling him I wanted to come work for him. Of course, now that Be is dead (long live Be) I can't do that, but it'd still be cool to talk to him. Wish I could be there.

I first heard about this about 6 months ago and at that time I was under the understanding that this is only open to current or ex Apple employees, not to the public.

If it were open to the public I would have my trip planned already.

i wonder if it's a coincidence that Jobs will be busy... from what i've heard, most people there won't have nice things to say about him... This would be a fascenating event to sit in on, but as has been said, that's impossible. I agree that Apple had more charm in the old days, between the innovations they came up with, the design, the people running the company at various times... everything seemed more open and raw, yet at the same time more sleek and corporate. hard to put into words.

Definitely. Apple in the early years was on the leading edge of a new frontier and that alone made it cool and gave it the mystique that few things carry now days. Think how cool the space program was in the 60s. Todays discoveries are vastly more important and exciting but they just don't carry the coolness of the early days. It's a lot like growing up. The world is a vast undiscovered place and every turn has something new and exciting.

Now I'm not saying that Apple isn't still just as cool it's just a known factor. In a sea of beige boxes they are still the sledgehammer for 1984.

Speaking of 1984 + 20 years...we already know that Apple is planning to acknowledge the Mac's 20th anniversary with a Chiat/Day-produced commercial reminiscent of that firm's legendary 1984 blockbuster (O.K., screenbuster ;) ). I'd have to believe that there will be other advertising aimed at conveying the same kind of message: that Apple is cool, that Apple is the positive rebel that blazes a new trail.

Which starts me wondering... What better way to remind the public of "what hath Apple wrought" than to have them hear former employees talk about how their efforts changed the computing world for the better -- and by implication, that Apple continues to do this today. I'd love to see commercials with that message; better yet, a one-hour TV special. Maybe those taped sessions will be used for something like that.

Hmmm... I *might* be able to go to this thing.
One of the original Apple engineers (from 1976-1984) is a close friend of mine, and I noticed his name on the list of former Apple employees who're organizing this event as volunteers. So he might get me in, maybe.

Plus, the place where it's held is about 5 blocks from my house...
