Probably been asked many times before, but anyone been in a car crash? I ask because I was just involved in a 40mph head on smash and my car was written off. I cannot use my left hand at the moment so excuse my typing,:p. but everyone was okay, but both cars were destroyed. My bro was driving and the floor was buckled under his feet along with the roof above him. windscreen completely gone and you can see into the engine through the dashboard. wish i took some pics as it was nasty.

Sorry to hear about your accident :( There was a thread about this a while back where quite a few posted their stories: Just had a car accident (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19180&highlight=accident) :)

Not sure of the relevance here, but what the hey.
Three major, scores of minor, I'm a driving clutz and haven't any attention span behind the wheel, a bad combination. Only two have sent me to the hospital with minor things.
What was your accident? By which was it one car (just you) or you and a few cars, your fault, etc. Details?
Sorry about your hand, something like that would kill 1/2 my sex life.

rolled my truck several times into a ditch, passed out, truck caught fire but went out on it's own quickly. managed to crawl out upside down, worst part was having to walk like 2 miles to find help. my back suffered compression fractures and i have chronic back pain to this day.
it's what i get for being an idiot...

some people slammed on their brakes on the highway and i was the last person in the close line and scooted into the person in front of me. no one was hurt but it really sucked. it was pretty crazy since there is really no reason to stop on that highway like that and i havent seen anyone have to do it in the many many years i have seen people drive on as wel as the year i have been driving. hopefully i can keep my new car from doing that, which is why i plan on installing brembo brakes onto my car, that should help alot.

Well, it was mine and my brothers' peugeout 205. A bit of an old wreck but now it is no more.
Wen straight into an oncoming car at 40 mph (both cars doing that speed). The Other car was like a 92 VW Golf GTi. My 89 205 is screwed. The floor under th drivers feet is bent up and the roof is bent down. I;m sitting here with a home-made sling and drugged up to the eye balls.
everyone else was fine. I'm not sure how it happened other than it was round a bend and we hit square head into each others front. his back wheel ended up up the bank a little and we ended up sideways on the road. You can see through under the windscreen into the engine and the doors on the right are jammed shut cos that side of the cab has been shortened by about 7 inches.
i didn't think to get any pictures as i was in shock. If i had not worn a seat belt or we were going 5 mph quicker i would almost certainly be dead or in much worse shape. Yes it was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me.

yes I have, two actually. The first was during the big hurricane (FL) a few years ago, I was on 75 when the trailer of some truck kinda swerved into my lane and bumped me, I was in the far left lane so I ended up going into the median which was very slick because of all the ran, I couldn't stop and ended up ramming into some dead trees. I was alone and luckily was not hurt, I don't remember the impact but when I came to my window was shattered and my side window had a tree limb through it, pretty close to my head. I came out with only a few cuts and scratches due to the glass. Luckily two people stopped, one to help and the other only stopped because when the trailer hit me a piece of my car flew off and hit his beemer....that was bad enough but I was alone as I said and under 21 so when the tow truck dropped me off in Sarasota I was stranded, I had to wander up and down in the rain to find a hotel/motel and almost all of them were fully occupied due to the hurricane and when I finally found one that had an available bed they wouldnt give it to me because of my age, my mom ended up "persuading" to otherwise in the end but it was the worst room I have ever been in, didnt matter much though because it was dry and had a bed. I had to stay there most of the night until someone could come pick me up and take me home.

My other one was in town, I was traveling with my then girlfriend down 41 which in three lanes. I was in the far right lane when a cab driver who didnt have his lights on and apparently wasnt paying attention tried to make a u-turn from the opposite lane and side swiped me (I think that is the appropriate term) luckily my girlfriend nor I were hurt and neither was the cab driver, but my car was pretty messed up in the front. The man driving the cab seemed way too old to be driving especially for a living and the cop gave him the blame and rightfully so.

I've been in only one accident. I was driving down a fairly large, fast (45mph) 5 lane street, and this car in front of me slows down to turn into a parking lot. I think about changing lanes to go around him, but the guy on the motorcycle behind me already did it, and I just decided to slow down behind the guy turning. Well, he turned into the parking lot, and I started to speed up, when this lady in a Ford F-150 King Ranch Edition pickup pulls out of the same entrance of the parking lot, and T-Bones me. Luckily, there was nobody in the lane to the left of me, because I was shoved over quite a bit... I was only going about 15 mph when she hit, and she had just pulled out, so she wasn't going very fast, but I think she gunned it. I was the only person in my car, and she and her daughter were the only people in hers, and nobody was hurt. Well, I wasn't hurt until I got out of the car to see the damage... I was lucky I was in my Suburban, because if I was in my Ford Escort, or my toyota pickup, it could've been a lot worse. Suburban. Built like a tank.
The accident was her fault, but the police didn't give her a ticket, because she was the only witness over 18. Although it was clearly her fault... Of course, her insurance paid the $3000 + in damage...
And what really sucked, was that i had just washed the car that day... You can see in the pictures...

I was in the front seat passenger seat coming home from a ski trip when the car hit a patch of ice, lost traction, and WHAM!, hit a signpost. Smashed in the whole front of a station wagon. If we'd been in a smaller car, it would have been us, not just the car, that was "wrecked". The sign said "Icy".

Ouch amnesiac1984... cool to hear you're okay though....
You were very lucky, head on's are nasty, and 205's aren't regarded as the strongest of cars, I had an old friend who was abit of a boy racer and had the 205 1.9 GTI, he lost control on a roundabout and ended up in a field, outside of his car, which had been ripped apart and seperated into it's key components.
I've been in 2, the first on the M1 in about 1986 in a Sierra, my dad tried to avoid two cars that swerved into our lane, and basically we smashed into them at quite a high speed, we were very lucky it didn't roll.
The car was totalled, luckily the Sierra was at the time one of the safest cars because of it's advanced crumple zones, had we been in a another car around that time, like a Cavalier or Montego we'd have probably been killed.
The second was in my old VW Beetle in the mid 90's, in the snow, I basically lost control, where by I couldn't steer, nor brake, so I tried to accelerate out of it.... hit a lamp post at I think about 30mph, the lampost made a big V in the front of the car, and spun the car around into a 180 whilst airbourne. Must say though, even though it was an old car, it felt enormously strong.
My brother had a nasty crash a couple of months ago, he was coming off a huge roundabout on the A46, and there was quite a tight bend, some furry little creature ran out in front of him, and his front drivers side tyre blew when he tried to take evasive action, sending the car into a wicked spin and sending him off backwards into a 7ft ditch. Had he gone front ways first into the ditch, he said he doubt he'd have survived.
I personally would have hit the furry creature....

Those sound pretty bad iGav. My pug was gettin on a bit and we we're saying just before that the clutch was about to go, and after spending £261 on MOT and tax about a month ago. (Just the latest in a slew of costly problems) We were thinking of scrapping it next time something went wrong.
So I want a cheap car thats reasonably safe, any ideas from UK members? Cheap, reliable safe and economic to insure and drive.

the same thing happened to me, except I was the car just before the last one. All cars in front of me stopped, I remember barely making it, looking in my rearview mirror and seeing this jeep which was obviously not going to stop in time, thinking "oh $h!t"... my little CRX was no match for a sturdy American steel bumper. But nobody got hurt.

Go find a Rover 214 or 216 SLi, anything on a J-M plate has a Honda 16-valve engine and gearbox, very cheap, very reliable, easy insurance, bit dull.

eh...I can't find the photos...
But my accident was with my '92 Toyota Camry V6. I was driving home with a friend after a night out, and someone who was driving the opposite direction of a one-way street crossed paths with us as we were passing the intersection.
I hit him (Jeep Cherokee) on his side, causing my car to spin counter-clockwise for 30 feet before going through someone's front yard white picket fence.
The airbag smacked me in the face...I thought the car was on fire when I opened my eyes.
$11,000 damage...6 months of physical therapy on my neck...I had the scare of my life.

I've been in a few. The last one was when I tried to pass a semi-truck on a 4 lane road while the roads had some snow on them. I lane changed to the left lane and started to accelerate. I never made it past the rear wheels because all of a sudden my car lost traction and I proceeded to do a 720 degree spin into the ditch.
Luckily no one, including the car, was injured.

In both cases, nobody was seriously (if at all) injured. I was a passanger in each situation, not wearing a SB (*cough*).

No...:( I wouldn't say he was driving too fast, he's just inexperienced driving on gravel. The stupid part about it all is that he was going on and on that he knew what to do if the car started spinning out of control. That was the last time I believed him...

I'd agree, the 'K' series really is a storming engine... only mildly tuned for the Elise.
If you could stretch to a 'N' plate, you'd get the newer shape 200, which is a far better car.
My bro has a late shape 416, and it's red line is the just under the naughty side of 7000rpm... :D
A late shape 420 will polish off a 320 Beemer with no real worries.
Rovers ain't the cheapest on insurance though.
You can also drop about 1k on a Volvo 850 on a 'M' plate, that although it's high mileage, should have a service history and Volvo's last for years.... big car, but still modern enough.
Or you could go to British Car Auctions (huge auction house) in Surrey (http://www.british-car-auctions.co.uk/) and you can pick up 'M' plate Mondeo's and Laguna's for about £500.
How about a facelifted Fiesta from late 95/96?? the ones with the 'frowning' oval look to them?? 1.25's are quite zippy and you get an airbag as well...

Thanks man, insurance is the main thing. It will probably be in my mums name so cheaper but its gonna have me (19) and brothers (22 & 23) on the insurance. I'd love an 850, but what about insurance? Won't it be massive?

If it's a sub 1k car, you're better off just going 3rd Party Fire and Theft, going fully comp will cost almost as much as the car is worth and if you're ever unfortunate enough to be in another accident, then the excess will wipe out much of your pay out, then remember if the car is worth 1k, they'll look at the bottom line book for it, and you'll maybe get £500 for it, then deduct your excess from it, and you end up with £100...
3rd Party F/T will reduce your premium and cover you for what you need.
Volvo 850 in 2 litre form is in group insurance 12, so it really isn't that bad... and 2.5 are only in 13, so you could get an excellent quote just 3rd Part F/T
I saw a 2.5 Saloon, in deep metallic red on a 'M' with FSH relatively high miles, but not a prob with the book, going for a snatch under 1k...
If you hunt around, you could get an excellent deal.... check AutoTrader out...

man, that stinks.
i got in a fender bender in a parking lot in Arkansas this summer. this lady was behind me, tailgating me... i stopped because this schmuck in front of me pulled forward, and then threw it into reverse to back into a parking spot. i didn't have any idea the woman was behind me, and a glance at my mirror didn't show her in that damned sky blue ford contour. i threw it in reverse to get out of the schmuck's way and went right into her, at a pretty low speed. there wasn't even a mark on my car, though it left a circular laceration on her bumper about 2 cm in diameter. she wasn't too pissed, and didn't bill my insurance for it or anything. lucky me. my honda is still beautiful and black. with some scratches from when those vandals bashed my window...

yeh your right, but as soon as i got my car i went to the police station and asked them about my car and if headlights get stolen. because the acura tl was one the first 30-35g car to come standard with xenon bulbs. and there really isnt many bentlys and the really nice cars, so just about every blue headlight you see is a tl. but now cadillac has them on the escalade, newer benz's have them, as well as the new maxima, so im not the only sticking out on the road anymore.

Nothing serious. A few months ago some asshole rear ended me. There was a traffic jam at the intersection and the cars would occasionally move forward. The jack-off behind me wasn't paying attention and rolled right into the back of my car. My car escaped unscathed luckily, I was afraid he cracked the fiberglass.

My cousin was in a major accident when she and three other sixteen-year-olds went driving up to the mountains by themselves. They were driving too fast, missed a turn on the winding road, and went down an embankment. My cousin had to have reconstructive facial surgery. I felt really sorry for everyone involved - my cousin, the kid who was driving, and the parents whose kids were in this accident. Now I understand why California has license restrictions for minors:
* During the first six months you are licensed to drive you must be accompanied by a driver 25 years of age or older if you drive between the hours of 12 midnight and 5 a.m. or if you have passengers under the age of 20 in the car at any time.
* During the second six months, you must still be accompanied by a driver 25 years of age or older if you drive between the hours of 12 midnight and 5 a.m. You may have passengers under the age of 20 in the car without supervision between the hours of 5 a.m. and midnight.

never been in a car accident as such, been in an rta where a guy hit me from the side (i was cycling) at 40mph.
I should've died - i landed with my back half on and half off the curb, couldn't feel my legs for several minutes - ambulance people thought i'd broken my back.
I was wearing a helmet; i hit my head so harv on the ground that it broke it clean in half and snapped the strap - couldn't even find the other half of it. Miraculously, i was ok, apart from a few grazes, bruises and some time in physio to sort my back out. I still have a bad back (7 years on) and will have for the rest of my life, but hey - like i said, i should be dead so i'm thankful for that. It truly was a miracle i'm still here.
The accident happened at 7.30am (i was on my paper-round) and the guy claimed he didn't see me which i find a little odd seeing as i had a luminous yellow, reflective, delivery bag facing him, as well as lights and a reflective band around my helmet. He was just careless!
It has had some pyschological effects, like i still cringe when going round a roundabout in a car if i'm in the passenger seat from time to time, and i've not been able to get on a bike since, but like i said; atleast i'm not dead!
ALWAYS wear a helmet. I'm a big evangelist for that now. Seriously, i would be dead without mine.

Folks,
I hope the healing get well soon and to the survivors...thank God. Man, some scary stories.
Here's mine: "The Kia Sandwich"
---------------------
It was the summer of 2001. I was vacationing in southern Korea with my wife (6 months pregnant at the time), her older sister, and the older sister's 9-year old daughter. We were visiting my wife's other sister in a town called Changwon. Shortly after leaving that town, I noticed that the transmission of my '93 Kia Sportage was starting to go. It was getting worse and worse so fast that I knew that I'd have to head to a repair shop pronto. I found one just in time. We waited for 3 or 4 hours while it got fixed. Three hundred bucks later, we were back on our way.
Not 30 minutes later, we were driving around a corner on a scenic mountainside road when it happened. The crane in front of me slowed then came to a complete stop. Thinking that the driver was just slowing for the turn, I was taken by surprise. I hit the brakes but it was too late. Smash! The hook at the end of the crane's boom was rapidly approaching and, as it breached the glass that separated us, I felt like I had been cast in a cheap, 3D movie. The hook and I came inches short of a fateful encounter but my relief was short-lived.
I glanced at the rearview mirror. My eyes simply confirmed what my ears had already labeled as hazardous. I large (6 ton) sushi truck was screeching to a stop behind me. Quick mental calculations warned me that his approaching speed was too great. The rear glass smashed forward as the laws of physics played havoc with us again. Someone yelled something off to my left. Instinctively, I turned and felt a sharp pain in my neck.
In an instant, tow trucks flocked to the scene like vultures, soon followed by an ambulance. All were shaken, stirred, but fine except for me and my neck.
--------------------
I was carted off in an ambulance and treated with a severe case of whiplash. I got the coolest massages from a machine made by Siemens. (The beautiful, Asian nurses just put hot towels on me.) Three months later, my wife gave birth to our first child. Although he can't yet say "computer," he does look at the logo on my iMac, point, and say, "APPLE!"
The End.
