Pros
Built like a tank

Will run most day-to-day apps without difficulty

Rather graceful form factor

Easily upgradeable/replaceable optical drive, which can be something very decent like a Pioneer not a bloody Matshita

Surprisingly capable for gaming, at least for games current during its production run.

Cons
You will definitely have to add more RAM. Definitely.

Probably the noisiest Macs ever. When we finally replaced our 1.25GHz in the bedroom with an Intel iMac, it was actually hard to get to sleep without the reassuring aircraft noise all night.

For that money I'd snap it up but don't expect to do any video encoding.

It would be a far wiser investment to buy a Mini.

Agreed. A Refurbished Mac mini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo will run you $650.

You might want a display with that Mini though....

Sounds good, but as the others have said, more RAM would be required for a smooth experience. Can't imagine it costing much though. I always thought the emac was quite an attractive design too

Product QuickFAQ

What will I be receiving when purchasing this eMac ?
Besides the system itself, we include a USB keyboard and mouse, and a power cord.

Are the original manuals and system discs included ?
Manuals and system discs are not included. You can, however, download Apple manuals from http://www.apple.com/support.

What software is installed on the system ?
We restore the factory software onto each system, and run any software updates that are available. No additional software is installed or included.

What condition is the system in and what does Pre-Owned mean ?
Our technicians do their best to restore each system to their factory specifications. This includes replacing any parts that have failed, restoring factory software, cleaning the units and insuring that they function properly. DV Warehouse warranties every Pre-Owned Mac we sell for 90 days. As with any used product, some minor scratches, dings, or imperfections may be present, and these minor cosmetic defects are not covered under the 90 day warranty. For more information, please review our Product FAQ.

When will my order be shipped ?
Orders are typically processed and packaged for shipment within a 24 to 48 hour time period. Your package should then take the number of days corresponding to your choice of the shipping method to arrive at your location. (Please note that we do not ship out during the weekends, as FedEx does not normally do weekend deliveries. If you absolutely need an item to arrive during the weekend, a Saturday Delivery charge can be incurred and FedEx will then deliver your package to you on a Saturday).

Yeah i want an emac WAY more than a mac mini because the emac is all in 1 and I think it looks better.

Well, it depends on what you want it for and what your budget is.

However, compared to the current line-up of Macs, this machine is woefully underpowered. It should be okay for basic Web / eMail / Office and iLife '06 (or earlier) if you add at least another 512kB RAM, but that's it.

The lack of "system discs" also rings alarm bells for me. You'll need your OS X disc if you need to repair your HD. It doesn't even say which version of OS X you'll be getting pre-installed. Based on the specs of the machine, it should be Tiger. But you could always buy Leopard.

The machine would have also shipped with iLife (probably '06). Check it comes with that too.

If you got a new Mac, remember you'd also get Leopard, iLife '08 and a full 12 month warranty thrown in. as well as a vastly faster machine.

Good Luck

$400-$500? That seems like an awful lot.. Tomorrow I am picking up a C2D 17" 1.83 for $575 :o to me it doesn't sound like it's worth it..

Refurb imacs on apple with a one year warranty are 700. I would spend the extra money.

Then again there is something to be said for nostalgia.

My mother has my old eMac 1.42 Ghz G4.... I bought it new two years ago. It was one of my first dips into the Mac environment. I absolutely loved the machine. Unfortunately, I need portability. Like one of the above posters said, it's built like an absolute tank and has a timeless design. Some people prefer CRTs still... I don't think the eMac is extremely underpowered. It runs all regular applications with ease and easily meets the requirements for Leopard. I used to play the Sims 2 and Halo with ease on the eMac. No hiccups whatsoever! I'd still be using the machine if it wasn't for my portability need.

Walk away. No System disks - means you won't be able to reinstall the OS. It isnt actually 'legal' for them to sell it without the system disks.

There's $100 or so there, to buy a retail Tiger.

Sims2. It won't run on a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver with the stock video card. It is very heavy on the video card and it WONT be fooled into working with a lesser one.

"Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3.8 or later
CPU Processor: PowerPC G4/G5
CPU Speed: 1.2GHz or faster
Memory: 256 MB or higher
Hard Disk Space: 3GB free disk space
Video Card (ATI): Radeon 9000 or better
Video Card (NVidia): GeForce FX5200 or better
Video Memory (VRam): 32 MB or higher
Media Required: DVD Drive"

OK, I checked, the 1.42 actually ships with a ATI Radeon 9600 so it does meet the minimum requirements for the Sims 2

The emac 1.42 is a very desirable desktop not only touting the fastest g4 for the desktops but the radeon 9600 is not a mobile version i've been in search of one on ebay for a long time and btw dv warehouse doesn't have any i called them a month ago they have listed please call because they don't have any in stock. But you can load the emac 1.42 with 2GB of ddr memory and it already has a 7200 RPM hard drive

I shouldnt pay that much for it - go to ebay and you will get one much cheaper. seriously you will.

That eMac shouldn't be going for more than $400. I've seen a few on eBay go for $390, and it included 1GB of RAM. Actually, I liked my eMac alot more than I did my mini, and the mini had the Intel processor. However, the eMac's are quickly become outdated and for a little bit more money you can pick up an iMac G5 or low-end Core Duo iMac. However, if you really want the eMac, go for it. They are great machines.

Wow junior, freaking out because you gave the mods 10 minutes to close your thread and no one caught it yet!

I may be a new poster here but I've been around in these forums and others for years now, and I can tell you that in any forum, no thread is watched constantly, 24 hours a day.

I think you need to lay off the Mountain Dew for a while and listen to the help everyone is trying to give you. The Emac, while a decent machine for it's age, is woefully underpowered compared to a new Intel mac. The other links that were posted showing used mac minis or iMacs for sale at a similar price as your Emac are just there for help. Take it or leave it, but there's no reason to have a hissy fit.

I personally think you'd be pretty foolish to buy the Emac when there are much better machines available for a similar price. That's my opinion.

You came here asking a question, everyone gave you their honest and very viable answers. You however remained about as open to those answers as a closed door. Why even ask the question if you won't even consider any of the given answers?

Judging by the above, I would estimate that you are about 12 years old (or am I overestimating?).

IT really isn't a smart decision to invest in technology that ancient. You can pick up an LCD for 150 and a used mini for 400 probably on ebay...the mini will drive circles around the emac.
