I want to buy a new game console but i'm not a gamer and none of my friends are. I still play with my Atari 2600 JR on a regular basis. I need to start of with something simple with simple games. What do you recommend?

haha...

I read this title & immediately thought of my Atari 2600! :D

I like it because it's classic...I'm not into games now. ;)

If you want one of the 3 top systems(PS2, XBOX, or Gamecube), I would say get a PS2. It has the best game selection and the best controller.

The Dreamcast had the best control to date, IMO. Although the very, very simliar control for the Xbox comes in 2nd. The PS controller was a great design when it came out, but Sony needs to upgrade it's controller IMO. Of course, if they did that then backwards compatibility might be an issue.

The Gamecube probably has the most simple controller and games combo.

I'd go with a GameCube a well, I've got the black on and love it. Get the wireless control as well.

What's nice is that Nintendo, JUST dropped the price of the GC so it's now $99. That's a great deal.

GameCube, 180 Games, 15-30 I'd be interested in Playing.

That being said, I have a PS2 (I won it in a raffle at College), 250 PS2 Games, 5-10 I'd be interested in.

Overall, Any Nintendo System would be my choice. Better Machines, higher quality, and no "special" features.

I also have a GameCube and would recommend that over the other consoles. Having said that, the GameBoy Advance SP is what I would recommend for you. Since you love the Atari you will feel at home with the GBA SP's two-dimensional games. The GBA SP is also well suited to single player use.

I personally own a PS2, since the majority of the games that I play are RPG. As far as I know, none of the other consoles (Xbox, Gamecube) currently in the market doesn't even come close to the number of RPG content available on the PS2. If RPG is your thing, it's a no-brainer: get a PS2. Overall, it comes down to what kind of games YOU like to play and look at each consoles to see which console provide the kind of games YOU like to play most and go with that choice. It's as simple as that. :)

PS2. Best selection of quality games.

Gamecube is nice, too, but I already have a PS2.

I would never buy Xbox. Too expensive, and I'm not sure how long it'll be around.

You beat me to it, eye!

I put an emulator on my G3 Notebook to play some of the old Commodore 64 games I had growing up. Not the same, though.

XBox. It has THE best graphics as well as the most for your money.
You get a console w/connections for 4 controllers, a hard drive and
even an ethernet card. There are plenty of great games, too:

Halo
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
GunValkyrie
DOA3
DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball :)
Splinter Cell
Project Gotham Racing

To only name a few. Also coming soon are:

Ninja Gaiden
Halo 2
Grand Theft Auto 3
" " Vice City

I know M$ makes it, but it rocks.

Yes

I have a strange love for the SNES. If I were without it when I needed it most, I wouldn't have been sane.

Isn't the C64 supposed to make a comeback? Or was that just some urban legend kinda thing. Are there any games on the new consoles like Tempest, Donkey Kong, Defender 2, Adventure, Qbert, pitfal?

I had a PS2 but now I sold it to get a Gamecube. I love the connectivity to the GBA and the games are supurb. I had a PS2 for 3 years and only bought a few games. I have had a Gamecube for less than a year and I have a dozen games plus hundereds for the GB, GBC, and GBA. The GB player lets me take advantage of all of them. Get a Hori Digital Controler and you are in heaven.

I am hoping that my new G5 Dual 2Gig will be able to run an N64 emulator. I only got to play the first Zelda game and am looking forward to the others.

Yes, someone is creating a new Commodore 64. With the components they used and today's technology, they ought to have to pay you to take it--it would be so inexpensive.

I used to play Tempest 2000 on my Atari Jaguar console and I play Defender on my Nintendo GameCube but it's not the same old Defender. There was also a Defender 2000 underway before the plug was pulled on Atari Jaguar.

I vote for GameCube because of the quality of the games and for games like Metroid Prime. Of course, if you want a lot of games as with the PC, buy a Playstation2. The graphics aren't so great and the quality of the games isn't very good mostly, but there are lots of games. It isn't that I don't like Sony--I had a Playstation.

I really liked the movie Resident Evil.
How are the Resident Evil games on the GameCube?
Which version of that game is easiest for a newbie like me to play?
I'm still used to one button for fire and up down left right as the only controls on the joystick.

The games are gorgeous on the GameCube. Resident Evil really is a great line of games. My advice: Start with the first and go from there in order. The story will have much more impact that way.

many opeople think the gamecube is for kids., but i am 23 years old and i have xbox and gamecube and gamecube is the best. ps2 IMO sucks. gamecube may have the least amount of games. im not even sure, but as one other poster said they have the most amount of games i would play. all of the nintendo games, even if they are a bit cheesy, are always fun. there are some other great games on the system as well.
my favorite thing about xbox is xbox live.
xbox does have the best online gaming system.

ps2 has the most games, but also has the most ****ty games and the worst technical capabilities.

gamecube i think still has the deal wher eyou get a game for free. i got zelda for free with mine and that game was excellent.

I think that deal has just ended. But the good news is Nintendo just lowered the Gamecube price to $99. (Already mentioned earlier in the thread, I think.)

hehe, there actually WAS a C-64 game console.

you can find more info on that on a website that features the original Commodore announcement of the machine here. (http://www.zzap64.co.uk/zzap66/thec64gs.html)

I have actually seen some of those in stores, but way then it was already heavily outdatet (all my friends had an Amiga 500 and my dad had just bought one of the first 386-PCs w. an AdLib soundcard.)

The C64 game console is about the same as the Atari 5200 console, which was merely one of their 8-bit computers which played modified games. A computer without the complexity.

What would anyone say is Gamecubes top 5 games? Im trying to decide if i should get a GC in addition to my xbox since its so cheap, but i cant tell if i would like any of the games, they just dont look appealing to me. I have spent minimal time with the GC so if someone could tell me in their oppinion what the 5 best GC games are it would be a help for where to start looking.

the SNES was the greatest console i ever had, maybe cause it was at the age when i loved games and grew out of them beime the N64 was released. IMO Nintendo really dropped the ball though by not using CD's and letting Squaresoft move to sony...I love square games (not that they released many in the uk) and they are such huge sellers in japan. the playstation would probably never have been where it is today without square on board. another problem Nintendo has is, while it was great as a kid, they are sticking with their kid friendly nature to all the games, so there is no choice to get more mature games that I would more likely enjoy playing these days, instead of bright coloured fluffy games. All they need is to apply some common scence and a rating system. Nintendo does make the best games out there though.....how many hours i used to waste away playig the ballon game on mario cart with friends, super mario bros and Zelda. Zelda on snes is yet to be beaten imo.

If i was to buy a modern console it would probably be the ps2, because of the squareenix games and the fact the cube cant play dvds as i dont have a dvd player in my room...though a game cube for completenes and cause i love nintendo would come a close second. I wouldnt touch an xbox with a ity stick, probably only because i dont want emmm$ taking over the living room as well as the desktop. Plus most good xbox games are out on the pc already adn the pc versions are usually better, have nicer graphics and a better easier control system (at least for games that benifit from mouse look)

Nintendo has a more kid oriented public image but they have games for everyone and they are not the only console w/"kid games." Which system has games based on the Olsen Twins and Britany Spears? Playstation/2. IIRC all the systems have the Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo and there is a Treasure Planet game for PS/2. If you want more mature content in yer GC games grab a Resident Evil, Sanity's Requiem<sp?>, Hitman 2, Ghost Recon, Blood Rayne, Dead to Rights, Hunter: The Reckoning, etc., etc., etc.,. If you think GC only has kid games you've never looked at what games are availilbe for the GC. And this is coming from someone who doesn't own one and has only played around on display models at stores.
