willing to do escrow?

OKComputer
Sep 29, 2003, 11:55 AM
escrow is okay, but if I remember correctly the fees are very high. If you are worried about my reputation as a seller ive sold many things on this forum. just look for past posts, I will also send you pictures once a price is settled but before i ship. I would really like to use paypal.

if youre willing to pay for escrow im fine with it but paypals my buddy ;-)

Douglas,

I was glad, looking at your eBay auction, that you finally sold your PB. What a nasty ending )-:

I hope you'll be able to recover the Ti or the money.

Good luck,

How did he make the payment? Thru paypal, or you have a merchant account?

OKComputer
Oct 19, 2003, 10:14 AM
he payed via paypal last week. I waited for the funds to clear into my checking acct then I shipped it off (this was more than a week ago) yesterday I got a "reversal of funds" notice from paypal saying he had used a stollen credit card.

How about your Ti 800 ? Did you sell it on ebay to a trusted buyer ?

I used to do a lot of purchases on ebay for peoples here in my little Quebec Mac community to help them getting good equipments for fair prices but now it's too risky cause there're a lot of croocks out there. I guess that your sad experience will be another motivation for us to use an escrow service for selling or buying expensive item. Forums like this one here are better places to meet honest peoples and for trading. BTW, your Canon G2 and the firewire drive are working very well. Thanks again (-:

Sorry for your loss. I know just about how you feel. I sent a person most of the money in the form of a Postal Money Order ofr an older Ti book in very late June. I clearly stated that I would send the rest of the money shortly after it's arrival. Since then I have been getting a runaround on the thing. I was in the process of begging just to get my money back when you listed this laptop. I wanted so badly just to drive up and give you cash for it, just to have it in my hands.
Any ideas on how to persue mail fraud charges on this thing?
Thanks in advance...

update: paypal contacted me last night and informed me that i was liable for the charge he made since it didnt fall under their protection policy. i guess since he paid with two credit cards thats against their rules. I didnt know because I dont like using, and hardly ever use papal. still...i am so humiliated.

plus side: my computer hasnt been delivered yet and USPS is tracking it down and may be able to get it back.

Did you ship it insured? If so, does insurance cover theft? I doubt it, but I thought I would try and help!

update:
it was delivered by USPS...THREE DAYS AFTER I put a return to sender notice out with it via the 1800 USPS number. I noticed that the guy had an AOL email so I deduced his screen name and typed it in. Sure enough he was online. I didnt want to talk to him because I didnt want to face the fact that I had been so stupid. My anger got the best of me though...long and short of it...he said "i know what i did but i cant give you your computer back. I need it." lol!

Anyway, so now im powerbookless AND paypal says I owe them 2200 dollars. I didnt spend any of the money i got from the sale so thats good. but...IM STILL POWERBOOKLESS!

to recoup my losses I am going to have to put my Dual G5 for sale but I dont want to list it with ebay. I cant afford to ship it, so if youre in the upstate ny area and you want a dual G5 with 2 sony trinitron 17 inch monitors and Airport extreme talk to me!

what a terrible day. thanks for all your support though. I dont buy macs for the computer. I buy them for the awesome people and things they are associated with!

Have you tried contacting the authorities?

Why is it that Paypal is coming after you for the money? Isn't it their job to verify funds before releasing them, and wouldn't they hold the buyer responsible? That is certainly enough of an incentive for me to not want to use Paypal for large purchases ever again.

There has got to be some recourse for you, whether in court or even criminally. If the guy's got an AOL account, he should be trackable, and should be at least guilty of fraud. Of course since the USPS is involved, wouldn't it be felony mail fraud?

Since I didnt follow paypal polices Im not covered by paypal. (he payed me with two payments) I didnt ask for two payments thats just how they came, but since "thats a sure sign of fraud" then it isnt covered under their policy.

Ocastro,

The package arrive, you pay the COD but there's a brick inside the box instead of a PB. What can you do ? The best is to deal using escrow.com for a more secure way to buy or sell.

About COD, last time i receive something by the USPS, as COD, on the label says clearly that u can ck on tha package to see if the item is broken or something, and u can refuse if is broken.

What do u think??

Also about the Scrow services i read something about some fake Scrow services, and i really don't think i can use something like that.

Thanks,

OK, it's different here in Canada. We can't open a box and refuse it. The payment must be done before opening the package. Bought a Mackie mixer last summer from a US seller using escrow.com (the only escrow service you should use on the web). The mixer was bad. I returned it to the seller and escrow.com refund my credit card. Easy and secure.

They will bend the rules if you make a scene.

I had the UPS guy call a manager because I would not accept a tatered box w/o looking inside first. It almost got ugly.

wait a second... if you put out a return to sender notice on that package, seems to me that USPS is now liable. They can't deliever a package that you have ordered returned to you!! Fight them on this. No way they can get away with this. And frankly, Paypal's claim seems a little fishy too, but I bet you can't win on that one.

also, turn this SOB in to the authorities. Find out his real name (I know ppl on macrumors have been able to help cheated people do this before) and contact the police where he lives.

This situation really sucks, but don't take it lying down. Go after the USPS for your money and the police to get this guy (and maybe even get your PB back).

I would go after the USPS and Pay Pal on this one! I would add on the charges for lost income too
Now if you want to include "pain and suffering" too, you have it made...
I just was screwed bu someone I was buying a PowerBook from... He's even a member of this board too!

so heres the chain of events.

I proposed to my girlfriend (price)
I got a job so I sold my leased car and bought a new car (pricey)
Girlfriend and I decided that since I have a G5 and a powerbook and she has a powerbook that we'd sell one of them to raise money for the wedding. (gettin up there)
Money goes through to my checking acct. buy girlfriends wedding dress (wooohah)
2 days later I get an email from paypal saying we need the money back now chump (ummm)
Girlfriend sells her PB and gets a refurbed ibook to raise the cash(ummm x2)
I guess I could now go to Apples Night of Panther to try and win a computer. ;-)

I did call the post office. They said since it was delivered and not lost that its out of their hands. So I guess its out of my hands too.

Oct 23, 2003, 09:12 PM
OKComputer, I don't want this to come out wrong or anything, but for you to say it's "out of your hands" tells me it must not have been as big a deal to be out 2 Powerbooks and a possible $2000 gain. There's plenty left to be done with this, the very least of which would be calling the police, US Postal Inspector, etc. to try and get some restitution from this scumbag. It may be out of the USPS carrier's hands, but they were essentially involved in delivering stolen goods, which can't be OK with them. I'm no lawyer, or police officer, or anything, but there seems like plenty left to be done here. Especially if you actually chatted with the guy and he basically admitted to the theft.

The other thing I don't get is this. If I (the buyer) want to send payment through Paypal, and I have the credit cards I stole to pay for it, doesn't Paypal still verify the funds before allowing transactions? Wouldn't they find out the cards were stolen prior to allowing the money to change hands? I thought this kind of thing was the exact reason Paypal exists. This all sounds very fishy to me. But hey, if you're giving up, so be it. Best of luck with the wedding and married life!

its a very big deal. believe me. Im not done yet. I am taking the post office to small claims court, just getting some legal advice first. The computer is gone. It was shipped to a PO box. The police said the guy is prolly long gone. what he actually did...rather than steal 2 credit cards is log into someones paypal account and paid me with this persons linked credit cards, so paypal wouldnt have known any better and approved them. This guy then asked me to ship it and gave me his address. I didnt pay attention to the fact that the two addresses didnt match. I never really told anyone that because it just goes to show what a flippin idiot I am, but Im totally devastated.

OKComputer-

Thanks for fleshing the story out a bit more. Glad to hear you're fighting this.

I wasn't aware he actually used another person's Paypal account. That would explain that part of it.

Your story has probably made a lot of us more observant of protecting ourselves, so stop beating yourself up...keep fighting, and please let us know how it all ends.

yeah, of course that's what they're going to say. They're not going to admit being an accessory to fraud without a fight!

It may be out of their hands to get the powerbook back, but not to pay the insurance you bought. The fact is they were told to "return to sender" and they did not. If they had done their jobs, you'd have your powerbook back. So they are not off the hook here.
