Very nice clean looking desktop Backtothemac. Is that the way XP looks out of the box? I have an affinity to blue.
I like you lilly pads desktop applemacdude. It reminds me of a famous New England painter Wayne Morrell. He does a lot of lilly pond paintings!

Yeah actually I did take that, and thanks!
It was sometime in August coming down Highway 101 a little south of King City. I was looking at that in the rearview until I finally stopped and took the pic. I took about 2 dozen, and that was the only really good one of the bunch.

That's been bugging me for a while, it won't just drag off like a normal dock icon... but one nice thing is that you can scale the moon size up or down depending on the scene you have.

The really funny part is that Coit Tower is supposed to look like a fire hose nozzle. How's that for phallic?
It was built as a monument to the volunteer firefighters by a lady who used to be one I think.
Here's a little history on it if you care...
Link (http://www.sfmuseum.org/hist1/h-coit.html)
When Mrs. Coit died here in July 22, 1929, at the age of 86, she gave practical evidence of her affection for San Francisco. She left one-third of her fortune to the city “to be expended in an appropriate manner for the purpose of adding to the beauty of the city which I have always loved.”
For several years after her death, there was question as to the most fitting interpretation of the “appropriate manner” in which to make the memorial. The executors of her will at last determined to erect a memorial tower in honor of this colorful woman and also a memorial tribute to San Francisco’s firemen.
Both have been completed for some time. The novel appearance of the 180-foot cylindrical tower which stands atop Telegraph Hill is surely significant symbol to the memory of one whose individuality made her as outstanding an example of the contrast to her days as is this unusual form of memorial shaft.

cmd-shift-3 should do it. or was it cmd-shift-4? one of those. also, Snapz Pro X is badass.

I used Snapz Pro X (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11530). It allows me to change the size of the picture and the quality of the picture before it even makes the screen capture.
If you're not willing to spend a little money, you can do a command-shift-3 and then resize that in AppleWorks or something.
edit: hmm, shadowfax, it looks like we think the same way... very weird.

Snapz Pro X only works with DVD captures for those who have nVidia, the last I heard, so if you have an ATi card, I assume you'll have to use videoLan client (I think that's the name of it).

that is, it's slow for capturing actual DVD video as mpeg. it takes snap shots great. what's all this about not working with ATI?

You have to choose "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu and then find the info.plist file. Add an item named NSUIElement as a string, and set its value to 1.

Decrease the quality of the picture, not the size. Well, make the size like 75% and then use Preview and Export at the medium quality. That should make it under the maximum size.
Otherwise, host the picture somewhere else, say, your .Mac site. Then just link it to your post using the IMG code.

Fair enough. I remember it being in beta still when I switched from PC to Mac and it looked interesting. I was wondering if it was any good since I saw on their site that you can order any Mac with it pre-installed, which looked pretty cool if it was a solid OS. I've never used Linux, so it would be interesting to mess with it a bit and see what it's all about.

Hi again! I know I asked my question way back on page 3 but I've have no internet /Satalite TV/ land line at home right now which makes communicating to the outside world rather difficult right now. :(
Anyway to see a DVD on my desktop computer I have to be in classic mode (the DVD-RAM drive I have in my G4 is not supported by the 10.2 DVD viewer) and I have tried the cmd-shift-3 combo and snapz pro (classic version) but they didn't work. Shadowfax you said that you caputred DVD on your TiBook, I have one too and would like to know how you did it.
Thanks

Isn't that what the dock and keyboard shortcuts are for? It just tends to be a general thing with most Mac users that desktop clutter is not wanted, hence the minimalist approach with icons (few to none).

but if it's keyboard shortcuts you're asking about, get youpi key (http://perso.club-internet.fr/phupe/english/index.html): it lets you assign shortcuts to any app, folder, file, or applescript you want.

Now, go down to that icon and either control-click it, right click it, or click and hold down the mouse button, until a little contextual menu pops up. One of the options should be "keep in dock." Now, quit iTunes. Even though iTunes is closed, it should still be in your dock. When you want to open it, simply click on the dock icon.
another way of doing it is to go to iTunes in the finder, by going to your applications folder. Drag the iTunes application file into the dock, and it should stay there. Now, to open it, you can just click on the dock icon. You don't need a desktop icon.
Mark
PS- this is an extremely basic OS X concept, so i'm not suprised nobody broke it down to you before. However, what confuses me is that in your screenshot, you do have the dock up there with unopened programs. Did you not previously realize that if you clicked on one of those icons on the dock that the program would open? oh well ouch, that is CRUEL, man. don't insult his intelligence... he obviously knows how to customize his dock...

I didn't mean to be insulting, i was simply confused myself. To Mark Jones, if you were insulted by my above statements, i'm sorry, that wasn't what i was trying to do. im not insulted however i dont see the logic. i use alot of programs so i must have icons somewhere what is better about having the icon all crowded in the dock rather than all crowded on the desktop. I see in shadowfaxes pic that she only has a few things in the dock. Is that because they are the only programs u use on a regular basis. do u have to go hunting for other programs that u usually dont use and that u dont have in the dock or shortcut keys to? maybe i am confused because i am unorganized and like things right in front of me for easy acess. But if im missing something, if there is some easier way to do things i want to know!

that @ sign, which is the icon for url links in the dock (anyone honestly use that?), is just a folder with a custom icons. when i right click on it, it pops up that menu with the subfolders, which then have organized shortcuts to all my apps. it's very akin to a start menu in windows; i find it extremely intuitive, though i rarely use it, as most of the apps i use are in the dock or mapped to a shortcut.

i was asking, is it the watercolor theme made for XP, or is it just the "classic" style (i.e. the ****** blue window title bars and gray buttons)?

Oooh, medea, where did you get that skeleton pic? I'd use that year-round...
And chalk up another person who wants to know where schiffi got the GIR pic. I know the site The Pinky Toe has some ZIM stuff but I don't think I've seen that one.
Someday I'd like to do a nice toned-down Invader ZIM-themed desktop using just purple UI elements (or, even better, Invader-tech looking ones) and a simple Irken logo at the center for a background, against either plain black, or the blueprints of GIR from the credits. The end result being to get the look without using plastering the characters all over, since the show had such a strong and consistent aesthetic (didja know the show is featured in the 2003 National Design Triennial? S'true).
*ahem* yep, I'm a fan. you may ignore me. :o
