can someone help trace the IP address? the SN is 'mattsindanger'...
what other methods can i use to help recover my mbp?
the mbp had photos of a loved one who has recently passed away on it, and the person i think stole it, a gangbanger that lives across the street, is kind of dumb, and might not know how to erase photos/files. (he didnt even know what e-mail was)
didn't have undercover, didn't have lojack. didnt have renter's insurance cause i just moved in.
already contacted police, and apple...you know how that goes...

Strange, it says "mattsindanger" has been logged in for 2 weeks. You could maybe go talk to them about something like the yard and maybe see if they just are like you said, left the MBP out on the counter or something.

I'd change all the passwords that might be stored in your lappy ASAP. That way you won't have to loose all your email accounts and IM accounts, among other possible things.
I'm sorry about your computer. Hope everything works out for you.

Try having the police or yourself contact AOL and explain the situation. If you get the right person they can give you the IP and you can get the general vicinity of where your laptop is by going to http://www.ip-adress.com/.
Another way I think will work is to sign up for a cheap domain name on a site like godaddy.com. Since you do believe it is your next door neighbor find out what he is interested in and try and put that into the domain name. For example lets say you are interested in golf carts, you might try something like freegolfcartforyou.com Reason being for this is because the hard part now is for you to get this person to visit this site. I believe as the owner of this domain you are able to log IP addresses and then can trace the IP to a general location as I mentioned above. Again the trick is to get the person using your AIM screen name to go to this site. So you would have to send them this think through you old AIM screen name and get them to click on it. I would do a little research on this as I am not totally sure.
Additionally, you might be able to get his/her IP by direct connecting with them. I read some reports though that say AOL has disabled this "feature" to protect the privacy of the individual.
Hope this helps a little.

I've read a couple threads with this as the synopsis before. I don't think anyone ever got their computers back.
I do have a more positive story though - a good friend of mine had a party and got a bunch of **** stolen after he passed out, including his dads laptop. The guy (besides being a major douche) stole a ton of other stuff and everyone knew about it. Somehow my friend got the computer back but he got a gun pulled on him in the process. If the police won't do anything and you can't prove anything, you're probably stuck unless you can get one of your "gangbanger" neighbors friends to fess up.
edit; the censor here is super lame. Who here is offended by the "S" word..

i know that with msn messenger you can track a persons ip if you are in a conversation with them. Personally i dont know how to do it but i have had it done to me. If you look on google I know that there are ways there. Once you have the ip just run a trace on it.
Good luck in getting it back

No, all you can do is show that information to the person them self and make them think you have their IP. I could put a similar script in my signature, and it would show your personal information but you would be the only one who could see it.
@OP; That sucks, but to be honest I doubt you're going to get it back. All the best though. This is why I never take my sights off my expensive stuff when in public. :D

that's why i'm rethinking about me going to america for studies... and they even want to legalise guns in the campus, what the frack?
on-topic, for your next laptop please use http://preyproject.com/ .
it's not 100% sure u will find your laptop but better than nothing, and its free.
If you reported to the police that u suspect the neighbour for your stolen laptop? although if it wasnt him that stole it , it will get akward between you guys.
And by gangbanger, do you mean underground **** or just a stupid bully? i mean if the guys has a gun... ****** that...

Guns on campus would actually make the campus safer, not more violent. You see... criminals can already bring their guns to campus and use them, without fear of reprisal. Why? Because criminals by their very nature already don't care about laws.
Most schools are "Gun-free" zones, which actually equals "Easy-kill" zones. If students and faculty are licensed to carry, at least then there is a much higher chance of surviving a shooting.

I would respond to this crap, but this isn't the political forum so it would get removed.

Wow.. personal attack... can't refute the argument so why not just throw in an ad hominem. Which is known to most thinking people as a logical fallacy.
bravo to you.

Ya, i'm there already but thanks for the link anyhow. I responded to his post in this thread, because it's in this thread - which as you are astute enough to realize isn't in the political forum. Nothing more or less. Thanks though, at least we can agree that Macs are the greatest.. :)

Sorry but the idea of giving teenagers guns to make the school more safe seems like a joke to stir up the pot, at least I hope you were kidding.

I didn't say the word teenagers at all. In fact in most states that have concealed carry laws, the person must be at least 21. The campus rule means that faculty as well as students that qualify would be allowed to carry after some training.
I will start a new topic in the political forum so we can continue there.. just answering your question here.
