The cyber age has made internet addicts out of most of us who like nothing better than spending hours glued to our computer screens. Naturally social interaction has also shifted online. As their computers link to each other via the internet these people interact socially online with the help of various social networking sites.

A Social Network website (macrumors.com) focuses on bringing together people who share common interests and activities or are interested in meeting and learning about different people and exploring their areas of interest. Interacting via social network sites can be called the online equivalent of hanging out at the mall. You can make friends across the globe from the comfort of your home or cyber café.

Most social network sites are web based and provide different ways for users to interact such as chat rooms, blogs, emails, messaging, file sharing, video, voice chat etc. Some of the popular sites are Orkut, Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. Users can upload their profiles, pictures and discuss almost anything they want. In most social networks both users must confirm that they are friends before they are linked.

There can be several reasons for building a social network website. Computer and medical professionals use this as a way of pooling and disseminating their knowledge. Pharmaceutical companies use social networks to influence the opinion of healthcare professionals. Since social networks connect people they can be of great help to small businesses or entrepreneurs looking to build and improve their contact base at minimal cost. More and more social networks are performing an altruistic job by bringing together small organizations which do not have the resources to reach a broad user group.

The downside of these sites is the growing concern over privacy issues. There have been several cases of pedophiles and other sexual predators misusing the information available. Also viruses, data theft and spamming are real threats which a user should beware of.
