OK here's the problem... I have an iMac G5 OSX, the reallly thin kind that sits on the stand, and I've only had it about 3 years... and about 4 nights ago now, I was messin around with this new MP3 player I got my girlfriend and I put the installation disc in, and tried to eject it when we were done and the Mac froze up.... So I did what I always do and shut the computer off, hoping when I turned it back on it'd be fixed... BUT IT WOULDNT TURN BACK ON. I've had the problem before, but its always turned back on eventually... like within at least five times pushing the button. Its only happened like three times, this has been the third, I havent even turned it off for MONTHS AND MONTHS now because Ive been afraid it wont turn back on... Well, THIS is why, and I have no clue what to do, this is ridiculous, they make these things so you cant open it up and get inside, the screws wont even come out.... Ima bring it in to get it looked at but there are files on there I CANNOT LOSE.... Anybody know what I can do?????

This is why you should always BACKUP your important data

Why do people never backup there important data? Especially if you have a problem and then manage to get it restarted.
It really does not matter what you buy or how much you pay for a computer as you are always at risk of losing data from a hardware failure.
If you google you can find instructions on how to replace the hard drive if you need to remove it prior to having your power problem fixed. It is on the list of end user serviceable items if you check the apple web site.

Wow you and me are like complete opposites!
But on-topic: Have you tried contacting apple or using any of the good info that has been provided here?
To be honest try doing that on a Windows forum and it like to see such a snappy reply! In my opinion you should be counting your blessings! Ha

1. I understand you're angry, but screaming at people who are trying to help isn't going to make things any better.
2. In Soviet Russia, Macs hate you.
3. You are right in the fact that the screws are impossible to remove, I have been there.
You may want to go to a repair shop with an air screwdriver and have them do it for you.
Do you have Torx wrenches? Those are, I think, the screw's heads. Buy one if you don't, they'll probably come right our.
4. I really hope you can still like Macs after this, it's such a shame to lose a convert over something like this.
Best of luck!

Glad to hear that it has taken this thread to make you realise that backing up is essential.
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacG5_17inch_harddrive.pdf
This link shows you how to open the imac and what screwdriver you require. It looks very simple and took me 2mins on google to find.
Also you can find many external drives by using google at great prices for your future backups if you decide to make them.
And don't worry about your rage you are just angry at yourself for not making backups of all your porn and are being forced to go to a newsagent and asking for magazines from the top shelf. Of course this is now gay porn as you are so angry that your straight porn has been lost that you blame hetrosexuals for your problems as well as Apple.
To sum up you are now a gay dell user!

ok one thing the screws do not come off but they are not made to take off. the screws are like locks for the back hatch. basically the bottom of the imac has 3 screws that acts as lock turn them till you cant turn them anymore. like you are unscrewing. anyways once you turn them all the way. you should be able to lift the back off.
oh and make sure the front is faced down on a flat surface. so now you can lift the back off where the stand is attached. once you remove the back you have access to all the insides. the hard drive is some where in the middle. good luck. and yelling usually does not work here

Wow dude. We weren't trying to be jerks. It's some good-natured fun. We all love macs. We all own macs. But please keep in mind that even at it's best, it's a COMPUTER. Computers are made of electronic parts, and these parts can break. I know, I know. Macs shouldn't break. But it happens, so I really wish you the best of luck on getting that completely figured out.

Did you not consider that there might be somethign wrong with your iMac earlier?
On ANY computer, if there is a fault where sometimes it takes several attempts to start it, alarm bells ring.
Macs aren't designed so you can't take them apart, they're just designed so any idiot (not refering to you as an idiot, of course...) with a screwdriver can't open them up and destroy them.
iMacs are basically Laptops in an all-in-one style. Found any laptops you can easily take apart recently?!
So heres what I think your problem is:
Every time you press the exclamation key, your power supply has to cope with very high voltages, your exclamation key is VERY powerful you know! It has the ability to make people think of you as a stupid moron with rage problems who hides behind the internet in an attempt to look strong! Obviously, this requries a lot of electricity. Now every time you press it, your Power Supply is put under a lot of pressure! Over using it is BAD. It makes the Power Supply weaken, and eventually, it may even break! On a PC, this is easy. The good people at Microsoft expect their users to have to use the exclamation key a lot, and make sure PC vendors design their power supplies so they are easy to swap out. However, Apple belive their customers are better than that, and that they don't have to resort to the exclamation key, because of this, their power supplies are harder to change! Fortunately, if you are willing to take a break from hitting 'the button', they will be willing to replace it for you. That's nice of them, eh?

I've never had a problem opening iMacs. Please read the instructions on how to open the systems, it will explain a lot and it's really quite easy.
Also, why not physically take it to the Apple Store in Southampton (http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/westquay/week/20071216.html) - call ahead of time, explain your situation, etc. Those people will be locals who you can understand.

I don't think it's a problem with the iMac not being able to be opened by the user, it's more of a "which screwdriver are you using?" type of thing. The backs of them are really quite easy to remove, it's replacing the parts other than the RAM that is the real issue.
I think your computer may have a broken or damaged power supply like Eidorian mentioned. Other than that you WILL have to take the thing into Apple to see what the problem may be.
Calm down, nothing on the Internet is that serious to yell about. The last thing these forums need is another new member that starts raging about the forums because they didn't get the answer to their 4th post. Those personalities usually get banned pretty quickly because they don't add any useful content to the forums outside of the repeat rants and raves about MacRumors Members, their computers, and how they feel about them.

Talk about inflammatory.
Buddy (op) we're here to help, but going on a rant is really not going to elicit any help from us.
Sounds like your power supply might have died.
You might want to check here (http://www.apple.com/au/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/) for info about Apple's extended support for iMac G5 power supply issues.
Also, having worked at a contact center that does AppleCare support, I can say that there is a very very good chance that whomever you talk to when you call AppleCare is Canadian.
Lighten up friend.
Edit: I see Eidorian has already sent the link to the power supply program. Let's hope it works out for the OP. Yeesh.
