I am just starting my postdoc stint... And my new lab has no communal computers. What's worse, we are short on space, and my desk is in the "wet lab" organic chemistry area. Thus, there is no way in hell I will even consider bringing my almost-new SR MBP to the lab.

Which brings me to the subject of the post.

I am looking for a cheap, older Mac for use in the lab.

My main criteria:
*all-in-one, with LCD screen. Any laptop or LCD iMac will work
*able to boot and run at least 10.4. A few programs I use (Papers, for example) will only work with 10.4+
*512M+ or RAM, 40G+ hard drive
*working Ethernet and keyboard. Power supply if it is a laptop.
*perfect LCD (dead pixels are OK, white spots or stuck lines are not)
*as inexpensive as possible. The ballpark price range I am looking for is $300 or less (shipped or picked up)

I am primarily considering G4 iMacs (their pricing seems about right), but a beat-up TiBook, Pismo, or iBook may also work.
The machine may have minor cosmetic imperfections (as long as they are not on the LCD).

An added bonus will be if the machine is located near Chicago, IL (I am in Northwestern University - Evanston).

I use Papers for my research (Ph.D. @ Michigan) too ... great program and worth every penny. But in my experience, it doesn't run too hot on my 800MHz iMac. The 1.33GHz PowerBook is just OK. I can't imagine it being usable on a TiBook or G3.

So, I'd recommend looking for a CD mini and cheapo LCD ... may run you $400+ but it's likely worth it.
