View Full Version : Is the Golden Age of Macintosh Rumors over?

Something just occured to me in another thread.

I think few people would disagree that the G5 is what we've been waiting for (all these years).

By revealing itself, the G5, as the basis of so many rumours in recent years, has finally put a large majority of mac rumours and speculations to rest.

Arn may have some views on this but maybe some of our lesser rumour site cousins may start shutting down?

The sad thing about this is that it is true.....

In about a month MacOSRumors is going to swear that the G6 is coming in the next few coming months....

Ugh I hate MOSR....

I swear, they will be the first to say that the g6 is coming (probably)...

hey, we're still waiting for G5 xserves, G5 powerbooks, G5 imacs, G4(possibly G3 + altivec) ibooks, and maybe one day G5 emacs, and then after that the G6, and the whole damn thing over again. and probably a bunch of other cool new stuff from now and then too. these rumors are just getting started.

can't wait till 128-bit processing;)

This had already started, i remember a post about two weeks ago on this very website, that had suggested this not being to far away.

With that said. With out rumors sites we would have nothing, apple doesn't tell us anything in advance, so we have to rely on these sites for some news

EDIT: as accurate or inaccurate as it may be sometimes

The "Golden Age" of Mac Rumors will never end. If the G5 starts to fall behind the Intel's processors(a horrifyingly shocking though, but possible), then the G6 will be as big of a rumor as the G5. If the G5 keeps the lead, then the G6 will still be a big rumor, but the issue will probably be about the price as opposed to the speed.

no, those weren't really G6 rumors, just some idiots saying the 90nm process would be the G6.

But isn't that what a rumor is?

Someone (idiot or not) gets some information based on current facts, makes a statement, and then a discussion begins over its authenticity.

As long as there's an Apple, there will be Apple rumors. The G5 is only the beginning.

yes the golden age is over primarily because this site has moved into other topics and macs are no longer the only focus of this site

but now the forums have moved into another interesting segment and it will probably involve more posters and more ideas

for a long while, it may be relatively quiet since the G5 has been one of the big things, if not the biggest thing i have seen here

but we can never look back and turn macrumors into a rumors only site again since many people use this site for other resouces not related to macs and in a way, it's natural for a specifically based site to trun into a more general one discussing all topics under the sun

a G5 Cube? you really think so?

i mean i have been reading about modified G4 cubes still selling big, but i don't know? if Steve wants people to buy laptops, i can't see him putting out a cube which would be a desktop.

as long as apple is in business this site will stay and we will keep reading. also for the same reasons we came here today and posted, just wanted to see if anything exciting happened.

The reason i mentioned it is because i have seen a few rumours flying around, concept designs, and just general wishing.

I felt this was as good a time as any to raise the topic for a possible thought

Steve Jobs has similarites to George Lucas. They don't do something unless it is absolutely perfect. George won't release the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD because he wants to make the deleted scenes look just like the actual film footage. (Not an easy task). Steve won't release a G5 PBook because he'd have to make it 2 inches thick, a power gusler, and noisy as hell. That doesn't suit the Apple world like it would suit the windows world. Some people would still buy it, but Steve want's it to look nice.

For those of us who have been following Apple and its releases for a while, it is a well-known fact that there is ALWAYS something better over the horizon.

The G4 was a pretty awesome when it came out. The iMac was a savior (if a particularly tacky one). If one were to remember his/her emotions about these releases, they were probably (esp. in the case of the G4) VERY similar to our feelings about the G5.

There will never be an end to Macintosh rumors...Not as long as Apple exists.

I 2nd that motion. I'm sure that if we put it to a vote, we are only at the beginning. There are innovations to come that we haven't even thought of yet.

Now we look forward to the G6, G5 in all products, and Mac OS X 10.4.

Mac rumors history is not like greek history. we're not going to have some magical golden age from which there will be a steady decline. or history is cyclical. we go between periods of fun, heavy rumors to periods like now of next to nothing, or really boring rumors. we'll spring right back up to the top, though, within the next few months...

A very thoughtful comment shadowfax. I agree totally. Your comment "within the next few months." Is there something in the offing that I'm not aware of now. On second thought is it MWSF?

Jar Jar Binks

Absolutely one of the top 10 most annoying movie stars ever invented, nearly perfection.

Even Gilbert Gottfried and Emo Phillips would find him annoying.

Jar Jar Binks, might even make that big purple dinosaur go berserk.

but yeah, things will pick up a bunch in december as MWSF approaches...

a lot has happened to greece in the last three thousand years, but since macrumors is dealing with the volatile high tech field, three years is like three thousand

when macrumors first started, the posters were waiting for the newest thing in the next crt imac and we still had the G3 powerbook, now we are talking about G5s and a second generation 15" inch G4 powerbook

I believe that MWSF will be special, since I believe that it is the 20th Anniversay. Makes me think about trying to attend.

The Golden Age ended a long time ago.

You know what the Golden Age was? The Golden Age was before MacRumors, when ThinkSecret was a small but fun rumors site and AppleInsider and MOSR owned the pack. The Golden Age was before Jobs closed all the sources of information, and a short time after that. The Golden Age was when every day I would be thrilled beyond belief to read new reports about Yosemite and El Capitan, and later about Sawtooth. When every rumors site had a separate page for each upcoming product detailing what the features of that product would be. When MOSR was actually credible.

There will never be a time like that again. It's turned into so much of a machine, so much of a game, when originally all it was was a couple websites, some good rumors and some fun speculation added to it.

Did *anyone* know the codename to the Power Mac G5? No. No one cared. That's the kind of flavor that's missing. I remember reading rumors of "Yosemite", "Sawtooth", "Kihei", "P1", "Lombard", "Pismo"...

No one cares about that anymore. It's all about reliability, accuracy. As if that was the point in the first place. It's entertainment, or at least it was. Now it's changed into something completely different. ThinkSecret was smart enough to change with the times, pretending to be a serious operation despite the fact that they never really took themselves quite so seriously before (they published reports from "special agents", for instance).

And then MacRumors. Reliable--yes. Fun? Nah. The fun's gone, it's all business now.
