TechTV is considering whether or not to change the media player format that it uses for its website, they have a poll:

http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/index.html/

on the lower right. Vote for Quicktime and support Apple so they can get paid, and at the same time stick it to M$!

QuickTime currently running at 29%, WMP running at 52%

Looks like WMP is too far in front to catch up :(

Shouldn't common sense tell them that QuickTime would be better because it works seamlessly on both Macs and pee-cee's, it has advanced streaming features (better that wmp from what I've seen), and they know Microsoft won't decide to change the 'standards' next week...

I voted for QuickTime, currently at 31%. That is a very respectable number. I just wonder what the 12% that voted for other are using?

I would vote, but the poll isn't showing up for me. I've tried in four different browsers. Safari, Camino, Internet Explorer and Mozilla.

The polls have worked for me before, but this one doesn't seem to wanna work. Is it just done now, or am I complete idiot and just not seeing it?

Hmm, I went back to see if the poll had changed and it's gone. I wonder which one won. Hopefully Quicktime.

EDIT: Whoops, Someone got to the post first!

Quicktime probably did win, but TechTV swept it under the rug because they always intended to go with WMV, and needed the appearance of impartiality.

That's probably true. Many people are refusing to accept Apple's growing popularity.

Well, my feeling is that it's likely that MS has a nice peachy contract for them, but TechTV needed to perform the appearance of due dilligence to deflect future criticism. Common practice in consulting world.

They probably closed it to people linked from MacRumors. :D

When I went back the Poll was about cell phones.

I think that they should post results of the Poll. If they don't go with the winner, then ethics would dictate giving an explanation. My hope is that they are impartial about the decision. I'm confident if they would do an investigation they would see the superority of QuickTime.

they use wmv because it's practically impossible to download it off of the site to keep... they want to hold their copyrights and whatnot to their show.

Sorry, I don't believe that was the case. They run a poll for so long and then they have a new one. That's just how it works. In fact the hosts of the show are often recommending Apple and in fact Leo the host of Call for Help said he much prefers Quicktime which isn't a surprise since he's a major Mac fan.

exactly what i was thinking.

another reason could be this: infection of the polls from people who don't actually frequent their site. just a bunch of people voting for apple superiority. the way i see it, if you don't frequently visit the site, why should you even care what format it uses?

Good point and though I do frequent the site a few times a week I never have any interest in watching there videos as I watch all the shows I want to see on TV. That and I have Tivo so if I'm not there to watch it it gets recorded anyways.

Does this mean you know how to download a QuickTime stream? I've never been able to figure out how to do it. And wmv isn't too tricky to download, although RealPlayer is easier.

Almost all Quicktime formats can be saved to disk once the entire movie has been loaded. If you don't wait for the movie to load in it's entirety it will not give you the option to save at all.

Only if they're progressive, not a stream. I'm talking about downloading streams.

That's true but thankfully most of the video I come across isn't streaming.
