View Full Version : iTunes Song Recommendations

With October 16th quickly approaching, I think many people will be buying iTunes songs to support Apple's release on Windows.

I thought it'd be nice for people to post their recommendations for a couple of songs that are on the iTunes Music store that you absolutely love.

Please link the songs in this format, in UBB code (http://forums.macrumors.com/misc.php?action=bbcode#buttons)

itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Song+Name&artistTerm=Artist+name

You must seperate the song name with '+'s instead of spaces and %27 instead of apostrophes.

If you don't know how to link it, simply leave the song name/artist. we'll link it for you.

1) Make sure your recommended song is in the iTunes Music Store
2) Give Name and Artist and a brief blurb about the song you like.
3) Try to keep discussion to a minimum... if you would like to comment on other's contributions, also post 2 or 3 of your favorite songs.

Example/My Songs:

Afternoons and Coffeespoons (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Afternoons+and+coffeespoons) by Crash Test Dummies -- A band, perhaps known best for Mmmmm, and SuperMan song... but I love all the songs from their early albums. Of the albums available on iTMS, I'd recommend this song as a very catchy Crash Test Dummies song.

Landspeed Song (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=landspeed+song) by Tanya Donelly. Tanya was a member of Belly, Prior to that, Throwing Muses. She's been solo for a little while now. I find this song quite energetic. I recommend this whole album actually (Lovesong for Underdogs)

Why Can't I (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=why+I&artistTerm=Liz+Phair) by Liz Phair. I can't say this song is necessarily my fav from the album... but is good and previews well. Liz Phair just released a new album this year, and I think it's worth listening to.

Hmmm what I have purchased recently that I really like...
Hopefully these links work--I'm on a PC right now so I can't test them :(

Warren Zevon -- "Dirty Life and Times." (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Dirty+Life+and+Times) Probably my favorite song from his last album

The Sundays -- "When I'm Thinking About You." (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=When+I%27m+Thinking+About+You) She's got such an awesome voice. FYI I'm not sure if this will link properly--I had to take the ' out of "I'm" for the link to show up in MacRumors.

The Vines -- "Country Yard." (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Country+Yard) I bought the album on a whim after hearing one song, and it's really growing on me...

the album Truelovewaits (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Truelovewaits&artistTerm=Christopher+O%27Riley) by christopher o'riley is just fabulous, whether you are a radiohead fan or not. i strongly recommend Let Down (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Truelovewaits&artistTerm=Christopher+O%27Riley&songTerm=Let+Down), Black Star (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Truelovewaits&artistTerm=Christopher+O%27Riley&songTerm=Black+Star), and Thinking About You (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Truelovewaits&artistTerm=Christopher+O%27Riley&songTerm=Thinking+About+You). it's all good new age style piano solo.

Great idea Arn. Since iTunes support for indies is in the news, I stick to some of my favorite recent indie artists.

If you want to know what Belly might sound like today if they had stayed together and spent the last 10 years playing in obscure clubs, listen to Cat Power's new album "You Are Free." My favorite track is Free. (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Free&artistTerm=Cat+Power)

Interpol is best known for the song PDA, but my favorite off "Turn On The Bright Lights" is NYC. (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=NYC&artistTerm=Interpol) News networks should have played in the background during the NY blackout crowd shots this August.

Finally, it's hard for me to pick out just one track from Damien Rice's great new album "O", but I'll go with Volcano (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Volcano&artistTerm=Damien+Rice). While you're there, buy the whole album.

Peter Gabriel -- "Growing Up" (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Growing+Up&artistTerm=peter+gabriel)
I first heard this on Delta Air Radio, coming home from Geekfest DC 2003. It's funky, it's a bit dark, but it's Peter Gabriel.

Lamb -- "Lusty" (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Lusty&artistTerm=Lamb)
TripHop, killer beats, great vocals...gets me going!

Massive Attack -- "A Prayer for England" (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=A+Prayer+for+England&artistTerm=Massive+attack)
Pretty much, this entire album is great. This track in particular has such a compelling, smoothness to it...moving & emotional.

Everything But the Girl -- "Wrong" (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Wrong&artistTerm=Everything+but+the+girl)
Most people are familiar with the track "Before Today," but this one is equally as good...smooth with a bit of dance appeal.

Hooverphonic -- "Out of Sight" (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Out+of+Sight&artistTerm=Hooverphonic)
Her voice...the samples...the feelings that generate through me when I listen to this track...get this entire album.

For the classical fans:

O Fortuna (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=O+Fortuna&artistTerm=Carl+Orff) by Carl Orff; the overature to Carmina Burana, one of the most awesome pieces of choral glory ever written. Sadlly overused in advertising, but still great.

Seraphim Classics - Bach: Favorite Organ Works (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Bach:+Favorite+Organ+Works&artistTerm=Johann+Sebastian+Bach); over an hour of fine Bach organ music for $6. Can't go wrong.

Speedy Marie by Frank Black (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Speedy+Marie&artistTerm=Frank+Black)
You're not done knowing what pop guitar rock is until you have this song. Preview doesn't fade out (weird).

You Were Right by Built to Spill (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=You+Were+Right&artistTerm=Built+to+Spill)
This song is in 3/3 (or is it 3/4? Waltz-like, anyway) and it borrows lines from famous songs and cliches. The preview is in a lower bitrate than 128, apparently. One of my favorite "alternative" bands that are signed to a major label.

Mesmerizing by Liz Phair (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Exile+in+Guyville&artistTerm=Liz+Phair)
This is a far better Liz Phair album than the new one (which sounds like Avril), IMO. I went ahead and put a link for the whole album, which I actually bought at iTMS. The song "Mesmerizing" does not have explicit lyrics.

Gone (The Kruder & Dorfmeister Sessions) from This Film's Crap, Let's Slash the Seats (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Gone+Kruder&artistTerm=David Holmes)

Electronica. A music collection can hardly be complete without a sampling from Kruder & Dorfmeister.

U2: Night and Day (Steel String Remix) (7 minutes long) LINK (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Night+and+Day&artistTerm=U2)

Rob Zombie: Living Dead Girl (Subliminal Seduction Remix) LINK (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Living+Dead+Subliminal+Seduction&artistTerm=Rob+Zombie)

Dinah Washington: Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby? (Rae and Christian Remix) from Verve Remixed LINK (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Is+You+Is+Rae+Christian+Remix&artistTerm=Dinah+Washington)

And...

Orgy: Blue Monday (new Order cover) LINK (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Blue+Monday&artistTerm=Orgy)

Moby: Soul to Love (iTunes exclusive) LINK (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Soul+to+Love&artistTerm=Moby)

Tori Amos: China (The whole album's good too.) LINK (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=China&artistTerm=Tori+Amos)

Primitive Radio Gods: Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in my Hand LINK (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Broken+Phone+Booth&artistTerm=Primitive+Radio+Gods)

I recommend all of the above. Also... albums I've bought with a lot for the price:

Barenaked Ladies: Disc One - 19 songs (1 hour 13) for $9.99 (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Disc+One&artistTerm=Barenaked+Ladies)

U2: Rattle & Hum - 15 songs (1 hour 12) for $9.99 (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Rattle+Hum&artistTerm=U2)

Vangelis: Spiral - 39 minutes for $4.95 (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Spiral&artistTerm=Vangelis)

BTW, iTMS links don't like parentheses... but it's OK to use partial names--it's just a Search after all. And use albumTerm instead of songTerm to link an album :)

I went through some of the songs in my iTunes and picked a few that are favourites currently in heavy rotation...

Pin ( itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Pin&artistTerm=Yeah+yeah+yeahs)by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Just a fantastic song for when I'm bouncing off the walls. We need more women like Karen O in music!!

Too Many People ( itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Too+Many+People&artistTerm=Pet+Shop+Boys)by the Pet Shop Boys - A fantastic classic. A great song for when I'm riding the metro to work.

I Love My Computer ( itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=I+Love+My+Computer&artistTerm=Bad+Religion)by Bad Religion - Need I say more?? :)

Don't want to mess up the links, I know somehow I would manage to do it, so I'll just post the names

Elegia by New Order (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=elegia&artistTerm=new+order)
If you haven't seen the animated short "More" I suggest looking it up on the internet. Good luck with it, though, the only places I knew of that had it both removed it. Anyway, the song is played from start to finish during it and it works very well.

The World I Know by Collective Soul (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=the+world+I+know&artistTerm=collective+soul)
Good song, but that may be somewhat personal, it brings back memories.

Tangled Up in Blue (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=tangled+up+in+blue&artistTerm=bob+dylan), and All Along the Watchtower (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=all+along+the+watchtower&artistTerm=bob+dylan), both by Bob Dylan. If you don't have any Dylan songs, get some. These are just the first two in my list of his stuff, but I like them both a lot.

ok hmm.. ah yes first off:

Portishead - Dummy (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&albumTerm=Dummy&artistTerm=Portishead)
This whole album is amazing, unfortunately song # 2 and 5 are currently missing from iTMS. Specificly i recommend checking out Mysterons (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Mysterons&artistTerm=Portishead), Numb (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Numb&artistTerm=Portishead), and Biscuit (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Biscuit&artistTerm=Portishead).

Beck - Sexx Laws (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Sexx+Laws&artistTerm=Beck)
This song is hilarious in classic Beck nature. Great beat too.

Counting Crows - Mr Jones (Live) (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Mr+Jones&albumTerm=Live&artistTerm=Counting+Crows)
This is an awesome live version. this whole live album is great too.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Hallelujah&artistTerm=Jeff+Buckley)
Great song! although i have a diff version than this live one on iTMS, but... i just bought this one, and its just as good if not better!

BTW Shadowfax: that solo piano album is amazing!! im buying it right away, thanks for linking it. :)

Some things on the jazzy side:

Blue Bossa (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Blue+Bossa&artistTerm=Michel+Camilo), a duet between the classicly-trained latin pianist Michel Camilo and the late conga player Mongo Santamaria. Unfortunately, iTMS doesn't have Camilo's best works yet ("Live at the Blue Note", recorded earlier this year, comes to mind).

West Side Story Suite (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=West+Side+Story+Suite&artistTerm=Joshua+Bell) as played by violinist Josh Bell. I dare you to try to find another enjoyable 19 minute song for a dollar.

La Fiesta (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=La+Fiesta&artistTerm=Chick+Corea&albumTerm=An+Evening), a epic, two piano, 22 minute bout between Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.

Ben Folds' Speed Graphic EP (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&artistTerm=Ben+Folds&albumTerm=Speed+Graphic), Ben Folds' Sunny 16 EP (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&artistTerm=Ben+Folds&albumTerm=Sunny+16), because it's always fun to support an artist doing something different.

My first post ever, and I think even the links worked! :)

Welcome Interstate Managers by Fountains of Wayne is a really great guitar pop album if you're after a whole album to buy. If you're after individual songs:

Stacy's Mom (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Stacy%27s+Mom&artistTerm=Fountains+of+Wayne) is the current hit single (with a great music video as well). The song's sound pays homage to The Cars.

Hey Julie (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Hey+Julie&artistTerm=Fountains+of+Wayne) An acoustic-driven song about a guy who hates his office job but finds comfort in the woman waiting for him at home... the only thing that makes his life bearable.

Bright Future in Sales (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Bright+Future+In+Sales&artistTerm=Fountains+of+Wayne) A song about an alcoholic sales man who aspires to clean his act up.

Other highlights from the album:

Mexican Wine (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Mexican+Wine&artistTerm=Fountains+of+Wayne)
Hackensack (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Hackensack&artistTerm=Fountains+of+Wayne)
Little Red Light (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Little+Red+Light&artistTerm=Fountains+of+Wayne)
No Better Place (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=No+Better+Place&artistTerm=Fountains+of+Wayne)

1. All of Massive Attack's newer stuff (Mezzanine and 100th Window), specifically Angel, A Prayer for England, Antistar, and What Your Soul Sings ...

2. Delerium's amazing albums Karma and Chimera, specifically Silence, Truly, Lamentation, Forgotten Worlds, After All, and Twilight (which I believe to be one of the most powerful songs ever written).

3. I'll definitely second Portishead-- "Roads" is astoundingly beautiful (especially the live one, but I don't know if iTMS has it)...

Think that's it for now :) Enjoy!

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus

They are both great covers of really good songs and Cash owns them.

Also, the Verve Unmixed 2 album is a good buy. It does not flow if you are listening to it as a CD but it is a great collection and in random play, who cares about the flow.

And lastly Wild is the Wind by David Bowie. A cover of the Nina Simone song. They are both good.

Buy some newly available Matador Records stuff!!!!

my favorites include:

Cat Power - You Are Free (recommended track: Maybe Not)

Mogwai - Come on Die Young (recommended track: Christmas Steps...which is only available by purchasing the whole album, but it's worth it)

Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One (recommended track: Autumn Sweater)

Bond (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&artistTerm=Bond&albumTerm=Remixed)

It isn't the best of their 3 albums by any means, but it is very good and the other two are not on iTMS -- so go buy them elsewhere. They are called, Shine, and Bond.

iTunes 4.1 adds a new feature for getting the URLs of songs/albums.

Browse to an album you want to share here and right/control click the album art and select "Copy iTunes Music Store URL". Then paste the URL here in the album and artist name. To share a particular song, right/control click on the song name and copy the URL.

For example:
Black Eyed Peas - Elephunk (album) (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=2205552)
Black Eyed Peas - Hey Mama (song) (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=2205552&selectedItemId=2205516)

And for a classic, check out -
"Night In Tunisia" by Charlie Parker (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&songTerm=Night+in+tunisia&artistTerm=Charlie+Parker)

Get the whole album. Well worth it. Its not even Jazz.....erm....not really. Its like Nu-Jazz or something.

The Bad Plus- Big Eater (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=526601&selectedItemId=526585)

Since I'm from Canada, I've never really wandered the iTunes store until now, and I must say I'm disappointed. Other than The Bad Plus, I couldn't find any of my songs at the store. The Walkmen, Spoon (another band named Spoon was found), Four Tet, Prefuse 73, Spooks, Puppetmastaz, Elbow (their album "Cast of Thousands" is fairly big now, right?), Bonobo, etc......none of it was found. :( Not even Mos Def was found, and he's on a major label the last time I checked.

Anyway, thanks for the recommendations. This is a great idea. Keep it coming!!

Anything from Luka Bloom (itms://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?&artistTerm=Luka+Bloom)

There are 4 albums in iTMS currently. Luka has a wonderful voice, and plays a spirited accoustic guitar.
