In those days Apple ruled, I found a scan on let's say the Dutch MR (http://www.applebits.com/)
This article dates back from '81.

even then, Apple did very good publicity campaigns.

Here's the link directly to the ad:

It's true, Apple always did have good ad campaigns. That's part of what separates then from the rest of the computer industry.

visually, many of today's minimalistic mac ads are nice to look at, but this ad from apple actually has something to read instead of "think different" which has been overplayed

Apple is stuck right now having to reley more on their design to sell the machines then the technical data. It doesn't mean much to most people who are going to buy a iMac anyway, the options and software, iApps are the draw.

Want to write your own program? Apple is fluent in BASIC, Pascal, FORTRAN, PILOT and 6502 assembly language.

How important would a line like this be in todays ad? (Updated with JAVA, C++, etc.)

At the bottom of the ad, under the Apple logo, there is this

See us at NCC-Booth 626
Anyone know what conference/show this is in reference to?

okay, any of you know the movie Trading Places? With eddie murphey and that dan ackroyd i think... Anyway, if you watch carefully, when Mortimer and Randolph are reading their papers (Wall St. Journal) in their club, you can see an Apple ad on the back page... Don't remember what product it is, but you can definitely make it out. Sorry this description is so bad, but i haven't seen the movie in years... i only remember the Apple ad of course ;)
