Beige G3 10.2.8 problems - FREEZING! WHY?

Hi

My beige G3 tower (333) that has always run OSX stable and consistent, has started freezing in 10.2.8.

It did it a couple of times in 10.2.7, but is daily now. Can I step back to 10.2.6

Anyone know why this would be? Or steps to take? I have Panther on order and will try that... with a totally fresh install.

It's a mini tower with stock SCSI HDD, with the addition of a USB pci card.

I'm not sure about how to go back to 10.2.6, but you might find something on Apple's website, and I also heard that you can go back to a previous version using your Jaguar install discs.

Have you tried running Disk Utility to repair permissions also?

Another question: Do you have the "bad" 10.2.8? I had lots of problems with 10.2.8, but when the re-release came, everything was back to normal, and even better.

My beige G3 is running 10.2.8 pretty well, but with a recurring problem.

Sometimes the Finder does not start up, and causes everything else to be caught in limbo until I relaunch it (usually via Force Quit app). Originally I attributed this to my dwindling System Hard-drive space (it was down to 56MB of free space!), but even since correcting that problem, the Finder's still buggy every once in a while. I'm wondering if it got corrupted and I'm in no mood to reinstall the system...

What types of problems are you having?

'not supported' only means Apple don't support it. It's a beige G3 for god's sake, it's not like I still have warranty or anything!

I've done a permissions repair, and run all sorts of stuff using Cocktail.

Apologies for saying 10.2.7, I meant 10.2.6.

Any useful ideas anyone?

sorry to hear you're having issues too.

My problems are... well, it just freezes now and again. For no apparent reason.

I had the bad 10.2.8 on it, and have upgraded to the fixed one. But no help there.

How much free hard-drive space do you have?

Are you running any 3rd party apps that load on start-up?

Do you have any usb devices plugged in?

Did you boot to the Jaguar install disk and run disk first aid?

My beige box was a 333, but I rearranged the jumpers under the piece of tape that says "Do not remove or you will void your warranty" (or something like that) and boosted it to 400. Sweet!!

Pro Keyboard & Sony Memory Stick card reader (used OSX drivers)

I read about that. I remember looking into the machine and not having the jumpers (I'm not sure I understood back then). I overclocked my G4 upgrade in my Sawtooth from 1.25 to 1.33 - runs perfectly but kp's after deep sleep. I can live with that.

Can you give me info on the jumper settings and maybe a photo of how it should look? I'd really appreciate it. IM or email me at hrobertson@mac.com
