View Full Version : Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) Shipping
MacRumors
Oct 21, 2003, 01:38 AM
Readers have started receiving shipping notices for Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther).
Mac OS X 10.3 retail boxes are shipping from Apple's Online Store and should start arriving to end-users earlier than then the official October 24th Release Event.
Distribution channels also started shipping Panther to Apple Stores and Resellers starting on Monday to provide stock for the Friday release. Apple's Night of the Panther (http://www.apple.com/retail/panther/) release party takes place at 8 p.m. at local Apple Stores and certain resellers.
Reports hint that Apple is going "all out" for the Panther Apple Store events.

This is what (a lot of us) have been waiting for for quite a while. Apple's quoted shipping date "before the end of the year" has come. I'm sure glad it wasn't December 24 or something like that. :p
The font management and the reputed faster UI are worth the upgrade alone.
Enough grief over what didn't happen; Panther's almost here. Hats 'n' horns all around!!!!

No shipping notice for me yet, and I ordered ~30 minutes after it was announced. :(
I did check my online status though, and it seems my shipping was changed to 2-day... though I paid for overnight.
I also got the educational discount, perhaps that has something to do with it?

I attached a some screenshots I took of the email and online order page, put together in photoshop, so bored cause it's so late.

Okay, I have to ask, and forgive my ignorance, but is Panther going to have to be a clean install as was recommended for Jaguar? For some reason, it was important to wipe the drive clean before installing Jaguar but I can't remember exactly why.
Even if it isn't necessary, could someone give some insight into possible advantages/disadvantages of performing a clean install as opposed to an upgrade.
I'd rather keep my application settings if this is possible. I don't mind rebuilding the Dock, Desktop, etc. but it would be a pain to re-enter information for Mail, Dreamweaver, Safari bookmarks etc. Any info appreciated, thanks.

I'll be at an Apple Store on Friday by 9. Here's hoping they aren't sold out and are still giving student discounts!
So now what? What's the next hot rumor to abound on this wonderful site? I say we go over PowerBook G5's.....12 inch G5 anyone?
Oh, does anyone know if I will be able to play DVD+R's after I install Panther? It talks about DVD+R's on the Apple website (Panther preview), but I'm still unclear on whether or not my actual drive will support reading DVD+R. Help would be appreciated! :)

Sethypoo,
A few words of warning. I called the Apple Store the day Jaguar was released, and they told me I could buy the .edu Jaguar. I waited in line, picked up a copy, and said I wanted the educational discount.
That is where my purchase came to a screeching halt. I talked to the manager of the store, and apparently, you can buy discounted educational hardware, but not software.
With hardware, the product is all the same, regardless of discounts. However, with software the .edu version of OS X is a separate product, in a separate sales channel.
So unless things have changed in the last year, buy it online and save yourself a trip...

No clean install is necessary.

You can get rid of all the small problems (and useless files, like preferences from apps you got rid of), caused by Jaguar of earlier OS's.
I'd rather keep my application settings if this is possible. I don't mind rebuilding the Dock, Desktop, etc. but it would be a pain to re-enter information for Mail, Dreamweaver, Safari bookmarks etc. Any info appreciated, thanks.
Burn your Preferences folder (located in: ~/users/yourusername/Library/) on a cd. Then perform a clean install. When Panther is installed, replace the newly made Preferences folder with the one you burned on cd.

thats strange. i think there would be a lot of students (like myself) who dont have a credit card and therefore would not be able to purchase it online.
I used my mums credit card, but I have friends whos parents dont let them use their credit card. How would these people purchase software at the edu price?

I think its lame they have this policy, but I understand (to some extent) why they do it. I guess a parallel would be Microsoft Office. The product (at least for the Mac) is identical for .edu versions vs. standard edition, however you have to buy the .edu version, you can't get a discount on the regular one.
As for ways to buy without a credit card, I know my school's computer store is going to be selling Panther on Monday. Also, the online Apple Store takes money orders, cashiers checks, and wire transfers. Besides, most students don't have an Apple Store within close proximity.
Of course, this didn't stop me from being pissed off when I found out I drove from Santa Cruz to San Jose and waited in line... for nothing.

I'm guessing the people who's orders are already shipping live in the middle of nowhere. You shouldn't worry if yours hasn't shipped because it will probably simply take less time to get there. They have to stagger the shipment dates so that they all arrive on the 24th.

Here in the US, students/faculty can but it either:
1. At their on-campus Apple Reseller (most colleges have one)
2. Apple Store online using check, money order, wire, or credit card.
I can't say for sure that those options are the same in Australia, but it's certainly doable without a credit card here. The Apple Stores don't sell edu software since it has a different SKU and needs to go through edu retail channels (ie, resellers) for edu reps to properly get credited, from what i understand.

I would highly recommend only replacing preference files as needed on a very selective basis. One of the rationales behind a major version number change in any software is that the basic file formats for the software may change (and typically they do.) I don't think you want to dump Jaguar preferences into Panther as the format for the OS-related preference files may be different. Presumably, Panther will be smart enough to know how to deal with old pref files upon startup, but IMO, you'd be better off trying to live without the old preferences and just taking the few minutes to reset everything in your control panels and the Finder preferences and whatnot.

I've purchased both hardware and software on the education discount at the Apple Store here. They just made a copy of the teacher's ID and driver's license, filled out a form and done deal. That was over this past summer.
So either it has changed, or one of the two stores screwed up.
Best bet, call ahead and check before you make the trip (I ordered mine on the web this time, just because I had other things to do that night and still want it when I get home).

All throughout the beta seeds, I performed an "Archive and Install" with the "Preserve Users" option checked. This way, it installs a new System, archives the old one, and keeps your user folder in tact. You won't get the "cleanness" you would if you erased the HD and did a clean install, but it's much better than doing an upgrade, which in my experience, always leads to problems.
And I can second the info that trying to buy Panther with your education discount at the Apple retail Stores isn't going to happen. You can only use the discount on hardware, not software at the Retail stores. Either find a Authorized Campus reseller, or buy it online.

The following is an email I got from someone who works at Apple in response to someone else's query. (I am on the Mac users' mailing list at UVA).
With your educational institution photo ID and driver's license you can
get education-channel pricing at the retail stores.

I think it has changed actually... I remember them specifically telling a teacher in the Apple Store last year that she could get her ibook there, but that her Office and reduced Keynote had to come from the online store.
But then, less than a month ago, my mom was desperate and went there, ready to pay full price, and they just photocopied her faculty ID and gave her the software for the EDU price.
They've either changed the rules, or they are inconsistant in how they enforce them.
Both of these examples were from the same Apple Store.

Geeze, you guys are like kids in a candy store....this is computer software isn't it? LOL, I am the cautious type, I will wait till everyone finds all the bugs, then in a month or so get a copy. I need not be the first on the block with new software. New hardware is another point all together, but overall let everyone else find all the problems first, then you can join the party.

I am supposed to call Apple today to find out what's going on, but I'm guessing they're onto the fact that I didn't purchase my powerbook after Oct. 8 (though my serial number was accepted on the UtD purchase page).

Nope, not me. My new 17" PB made it through for a 19.95 upgrade. But my order status still says "on or before 10/24."
I placed my upgrade order on 10/9, immediately after I read on this site that my serial number might qualify for the fulfillment pricing. I've had my new powerbook for about three weeks now.

My Panther UTD order (15" PB) was upgraded to "2nd day" from ground. I'm guessing it will ship out tomorrow and arrive Friday afternoon.
I think Apple wants to make as big an impact with Panther as possible and this means getting out the UTD orders for the G5 ASAP.
Once you qualify I'm pretty sure the Apple fulfilment center doesn't care what system you qualified with as that would only create more work for them and make fulfilment more expensive. So, look for tomorrow to big the big ship day for everyone who requested regular ground shipping. BTW Apple did the same thing with Jaguar if you recall.

Yeah, mine now says "2-day" as well, but I haven't been charged for any shipping, let alone the shipping upgrade.
Before, I only meant that I could understand why the full retail boxed versions had started shipping but our UTDs had not. To me, it makes perfect sense.
Hopefully, everyone's suspicions are correct and the UTDs will ship by tomorrow. I'm anxious to see how many hacks I can discard once Panther's installed. I'd prefer to be able to run the OS without any third-party modifications.

I see people suggesting doing an "Archive & Install". This is my first OS X upgrade so I could use a little more info :)
The impression I got is that this archives the old system; what exactly does that mean? How would I go back if I needed to? If I had no problems, how would I dump the archive to free up the space?

Also, I can confirm that the Apple Stores will close at 7:30pm for the party set up along with formating ALL of their Macs to 10.3 and displaying all sorts of cool Panther stuff around. There will also be a free give-away for the first few people along with being able to win a Mac!

No shipping notice yet, but I'm scheduled for 2 day shipping on an Up-to-Date plan order. They wouldn't have to ship until tomorrow to hit the 2-day shipping window.
But, Apple *did* hit my credit card again for the amount of sale, something online store rep said wouldn't happen again until they were preparing to ship.

My brothers ordered 2 12"/1GHz/AP/COMBO on the 18th September the inefficient apple store UK didnt deliver them till a month later.
However they qualified for the Up to Date program in the UK. :)
Still nasty having to pay £30 more when we have just shelled out around £3000 worth of equipment.
I think Apple should take better care of their customers than that, especially seen as they didnt even recognise my payment for 2 weeks!

i ordered Panther on the 11th, and suddenly my overnight shipping that I paid for was changed to 2 day. so i called Apple and the girl says "well i can just credit you the shipping since you aren't supposed to get it till Friday anyway" as if to imply that i should take the free shipping, its going out today or tomorrow, and i will have friday even by the slowest method. i declined and told her that i wanted overnight so i could have it early. to which she said "you won't have it till Friday" to which I said "you are aware of a ton of people getting notices that it shipped today, right?" to which she said "OK sir." and that was that.

Just talked to someone at the Willow bend Apple Store in North Dallas, TX. No .edu pricing on software (except MS Office which comes in a special box that they do carry).
On another note - I got a $20 Apple Store e-coupon from Apple for renewing my .Mac subscription. Can't use it at the physical Apple Store's - just online or via the 800 number. I tried using it on the Apple Store for Education and got an "Claim Code is not valid" error.
I sent an email off asking about it, but I'm gonna be po'ed if I cannot use it with Edu' discount. I mean, what's the point of it for students then? (That $20 coupon was one of the clincher's in my decision to stay with my .Mac account)

As long as you save all your important files and preferences first. If you have already done that you should have no problems with reformatting your disk and installing it from scratch. If you want to update your existing copy of Jaguar, make sure you disable andy hacks or applications that modify the system. You might not really need to do all this, but in the event of problems, you will be glad you did. I updated a fresh copy of jaguar and it is running faster than it ever has on this old B&W.
By the way, if you use your Mac primarily as a business computer, you should wait a few days just to be sure there isn't some bug everyone will be reporting over the weekend.

I'm guessing the people who's orders are already shipping live in the middle of nowhere. You shouldn't worry if yours hasn't shipped because it will probably simply take less time to get there. They have to stagger the shipment dates so that they all arrive on the 24th.

Unlikely, I live about as close to the middle of nowhere on a college campus as possible. There is a lot of nowhere up here in Northwest Missouri, and mine has yet to ship. Ordered on the 10th if that makes a difference...

When you clean install it, it also takes a fraction of the time to install... and I do mean fraction. You are better served to just copy off your important files, clean install, and bring those files back to the machine.

I'm just wondering - to do a clean install do you just have to pop in the CD and select an option for clean install? Or Are you supposed to format the hard disk before you install the program? If so - how would you go about formatting the hard disk?
In addition, before you format your hard disk, do you have to deauthorize your itunes music and then authorize it again after the clean panther install?

I've tested Panther on several systems by just doing it as an update install. This has worked with ZERO problems, as well it should.
On my primary work computer, I have 4 internal hard drives. One is my OS, applications and main documents. The second drive is a backup, and drives 3 and 4 are used for media production. So the point is that I could always just carbon copy drive 2 to drive 1 if something was wrong with the install, but like I said, I've had no problems.
Unless you'd done some hacks to the OS, I recommend doing it as an update install. You'd still want to back everything up, but it is easier and faster. I also find it more reliable in terms of dealing with preferences and library items.
By the way, if you use your Mac primarily as a business computer, you should wait a few days just to be sure there isn't some bug everyone will be reporting over the weekend.
Panther (as the GM) has already been pretty damn well tested in the public for the past couple of weeks or so. If there's concerns about compatibility or whatever just check the boards...you won't find much, but there are some issues. Everything I have works like a charm.
I think it's more important to wait a few days for updates that come via the Software Update, since those are not as publicly tested as Panther has been.

Any computers that needed a firmware update for jaguar need it for panther as well. Make sure to check the documentation that comes with the installation disks to see if additional firmware updates will be required for panther. I doubt any will though.
Here is the firmware update list for Jaguar:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
And yes, it absolutely blows when you don't update the firmware before installing. My coworker could not figure out why her machine was crashing after 3 full installs... and then I found this KBase article.
EDIT: Just wanted to clarify that if you've already updated the firmware for jaguar, you don't have to update it again... unless a NEW firmware update is released in the next few days.

I personaly think Apple is following AudioQuest's line of analog interconnects. www.audioquest.com Jaguar, Panther, then Cheetah... Ok, probably a coincidence, but interesting none-the-less.
And for those people that insist on complaining to Apple about your 1 day shipping, their goal is to get the package to you by friday, so if you keep the 1 day, they're just going to ship it later. A smart person that has been bumped down from 1 day to 2 day would ask for an adjustment in shipping costs.

Well, because of all these pre-orders and Apple Store stock, the Portuguese local representative of Apple, called Apple IMC Portugal, had to CANCEL the launch event they were planning, because Apple said, basically, "we don't have enough of them to give to you". I wonder if it's happening to all countries which don't have an Apple subsidiary but an Apple representative.
That means they won't have a special opening of computer stores at midnight just to sell panther, no reporters and no TV coverage. Apple should think about this. I'd like to wait for a legal copy, but I think next time I'll just Carracho the heck out of it.

Cheetah was 10.0, Puma was 10.1. The fact that Cheetah was the slowest may seem weird, but remember that that was the creation of the theme--they named it "Puma" because most of the work was making it faster than Public Beta, which they did.

If you want to be sure to get a T-shirt, you can go to one of the new stores opening on Friday, such as the UTC store in San Diego. The first 1000 people get Apple T-shirts. If it is like other grand openings, the shirts will have the name of the store, not a Panther. Of course, a panther-themed shirt would be more fun to have.

I just started with a new web server. It allows us to update things online with asp databases, etc. Anyways. I'm a mac user and the interface dosen't show up right on my computer. I have a G5 and VirtPC would not work on it. So I called the company and asked about whether they were trying to make their stuff online compatible with macs. The reply I got back said that they understood that the new mac OS that was coming out, 10.3, was going to have a program WITH it that could run PC programs. The email was fairly vaige, as I am sure whatever info she got from Apple was even more vaige. Anyways, are there any rumors like this that there is some kind of PC app running on the mac platform out there?
Here's the email word for word:
"I found a little more information for you about the Mac issues with E-zekiel. Apparently, the very latest version of the Mac operating system comes with a Virtual PC pack that allows your computer to function as a PC. Software is also available on the Internet that does the same thing. We've heard conflicting reports regarding Jaguar and the inclusion of the PC pack. I'm told that Apple is getting ready to release "Panther," its latest OS version, so it could work as well. The E-zekiel staff wants the next version of E-zekiel to be more Mac compatible, so that would be a big help.
All this to say, if the Jaguar OS has a PC pack, then everything should work properly."

They've either changed the rules, or they are inconsistant in how they enforce them.
Both of these examples were from the same Apple Store.
To add to the confusion, I just called my nearest Apple Store this weekend, where I was told that educational discounts are only for hardware.
So, I'm guessing that the rule is hardware-only, and that it's sometimes ignored, circumvented, etc...

The answer is "no". There is no bundled PC emulation in Jag or Panther. Of course, there's Virtual PC, but you already know that it doesn't work yet on the G5. The freeware "Boch" package is a waste of time.
You might try M$ Remote Desktop Connection for Mac, if you have a Windoze PC around. It allows you to have a Windows desktop controlled and displayed on your Mac.

Can anyone familiar with the Panther upgrade process post a guide on how to upgrade, what the various upgrade paths are, and what needs to be backed up and restored once Panther is installed? There seems to be many people who are as confused as I am. I would hate to lose something important in the process!
Thanks!

You should have had to give them your email address when you ordered it. You will be notified that way. Also, just a note to those that are unaware, I found out through a conversation with an Apple rep last week that with the update CD you can do a clean install/and those other options. You don't have to revert to the CDs you have for a full install, ie. 10.2.7, and then run your update CDs. You can do it all with the newest update CD, 10.3. Whoop!

Yes. It has been opined here and elsewhere that perhaps this is a result of the massive number of hits it is receiving from eager Panther customers. But I have a hard time believing a few overenthusiastic geeks are overloading the system. Rather, I prefer to think that so many Panther shipments are being processed right now that they had to take the system offline while they update all the orders.

Looks like you may be disappointed then. The fine print for the .Mac renewal offer clearly stated that the $20 credit cannot be used in conjunction with educational pricing. We thought about using it for an educational purchase of Panther, but saw this in the fine print, so we opted for The Sims instead. Unfortunately the only other things we needed recently at the Apple Store were $19 cables, and the $20 discount also doesn't cover shipping/tax, so it was no good for those either.

There was an early article about Panther in the last month or so that mistakenly gave the impression that Virtual PC or similar technology was included with Panther. I forget who published it, but it showed up on the rumor sites before the publisher quickly clarified that it was a mistake. That's probably where they got it.
Unfortunately G5s are probably out of luck until Microsoft fixes Virtual PC for them. Who knows how long that might take??

I haven't seen the Panther install yet, but either you will be given a choice of installation types, or there will be a Customize button at some point in the process. Don't be afraid to push that button and choose the option that fits you best!
I'd say for most people, Archive/Install is the way to go. You get a nice clean install of the OS, but you don't lose all your data and settings.
In addition, before you format your hard disk, do you have to deauthorize your itunes music and then authorize it again after the clean panther install?
That's a good point! Regardless of which install method you use, it would be a very good idea to backup /Users/Shared/SC Info. This is where iTunes authorization is stored. If you really want to be ultra-safe, you could deauthorize too, and just reauthorize after the install. But backing up and restoring the SC Info folder should also work.

Hi,
I am a UK Apple Reseller, and we received all of our stocks yesterday morning. I was as suprised as you guys, considering the Friday launch. I was expecting stocks to arrive on Friday, or after the event, just like the Jaguar event.
Anyhow, installation is a breeze. Just run the installer and it senses you already are running 10.2 and it does an upgrade. Takes around 40ish minutes to run. Doesn't ask for CD#3. First impressions are the speed it now makes my Powerbook 12 run at. Very impressive. Next I installed it onto a G4 400 and had problems, the installer said there was an error with the install, try again. I tracked this down to be a disc error on the hard drive, so Norton 8 fixed that, and then Panther installed fine. The G4 400 is now much zippier than before...
I'll be playing some more today, just getting ready for Friday :-)

:D Duff-Man says.....My shipment says the same, however I just talked to FedEx and they said that they actually have not picked up the package yet and that this info is just "pre-input" and that it is highly unlikely that delivery would happen Thursday....he also said he has seen "hundreds" of these today and had many calls about it.......oh yeah!

I recently did some freelance work and I'm expecting $350 by tomorrow or Friday. Problem is, my mom is lookin to take all of that money, and I cant buy the Panther edu discount in the store, which i was PLANNING to do. :( So now, I have to find someone with a credit card, or do some pleading.

Do you owe your mother the money, or does she just take money from you? If she does, and you're in college, tell her to earn her own damn money :D

Hi all
Checked FedEx and it says delivery by 10/23/2003 by 12:00 noon. If it actually happens I'll be shocked and happy.

I dont owe her $$, and she makes her own. It's just that bills, + splitting the mortgage, + cable AND cable modem, + car payments, + car insurance, - father = STRESS.
I'm sure being a single parent PLUS supporting a 20 year old isnt exactly the easiest thing in the world.
So, I dont mind givin her the money, just not ALL of it :D I need Panther!!!
I'm sure that whomever is a parent here, with a child in college, understands this situation.

Hi to all the Brits out there...
I was advised Tuesday 21st lunchtime that Panther had shipped via 'Parcel Post' - does that mean Royal Mail delivery, or just 'any carrier they choose to use on that particular day', since I still don't have it yet......
anyone received theirs yet?
please let me know.
TIA
Nig.

Apple Store says that my Panther has been shipped. FedEx has it listed as 2-day air and to be delivered by 4:30pm 10/24. That will be great timing so that I can attend the Panther Party as planned.

All I know is that I want someone in Dallas who receives their copy of Panther *today* or earlier to let me install it on my machine *today* so I don't have to wait until *tomorrow*. I just checked my FedEx track and mine won't arrive until tomorrow, Friday. Argh!

Hmm, well I ordered mine on Wednesday the 8th at 6:47am PT and the status on mine remains "open." They haven't hit my credit card for the charge yet either. I guess I'll give them a call later this evening if it doesn't change between now and then to see what the deal is...

I got my version of Panther today :D Seems you only need disc 1 and 2 if your just upgrading. My PowerBook is installing Panther now. My Panthe rbox is a little scratched. But the 3D (puffed up box) effect is sweet. Yay!!

I was better off with it not shipped. FedEx tracking says it left Middletown, PA 10:56 last night and no word since. I've driven that in 9.5 hours. Could have nearly gone and got it myself and made it back by now. The suspense is killing me! Where's my Panther!
Still reports as being delivered by 4:30 tomorrow though, plenty of time to install and drive to Somerset Apple Store in Troy. Anyone else going to that store?

To those of you who have received Panther through FedEx: can you tell me if they require a signature for this package? Mine is supposed to be delivered by 4:30 tomorrow and I will be at work, and my wife will be out of town. If they leave a slip on my door saying they attempted delivery and will try again on Monday I will freak out.
Thanks,
E

Not sure about FedEx, but with UPS you can request either they just leave it on the doorstep (and not hold them liable if it gets stolen) or request that they deliver it to your neighbor and let them sign for it in your place.
