i am a techie who used to be a hr person and people have sent resumes or asked for tips from macrumors, so now, if you want free advice, post your resumes or questions and i can help

i felt prompted to put this up when eyelikeart asked for tips;)

of course, don't need real names or addresses, just make something up

man...u are indefinitely one of the fixtures here at macrumors...

shall I email it to u or what? ;) :p

jefhatfield
Apr 27, 2002, 11:31 AM
thanks, eye

yeah, you can post it here or send it to my private box here on macrumors

i know this thread is not as easy to "do" as other threads and it is a pain to post a full resume so general questions are fine also, but it could pay off if you are looking for a job

the main thing i tell people is keep the initial resume to one page and if it is a technical resume, then keep the jargon to a minimum since hr people don't know the jargon as well as the techies do

to those outside of the techie field, ieee sounds like a sci fi club and A+ is thought to be a computer language:D

and i could help with any type of resume

I emailed u a pdf a little while ago...

I can't post that up here I don't think...

anyway...thanks again jef...

ps: any advice on good cover letter structure?

i'm interested, but i'm not a mac techie or anything! so i wouldn't really fit the mold of the types of folks jef could help out..

it's a good offer though. others should probably take him up on it

dude u should definitely get something going then...it's still a creative job...

the best thing for someone like u (in my opinion) would be to get into an internship program...if u can afford to work for free...I did that at a television station...and it looks really great on a resume! :p

I'd like to move to California....... or Seattle......... *sniff sniff*

Anyone know of any decent job sites that cover creative work in these 2 cities..... not sure which one I'd prefer....... SF has a really cool dance music scene (I think u US guys call it Electronica..... :p ) but Seattle is more sophisticated in an European way..... and it rains alot just like London..... so I wouldn't feel as homesick......:p

San Francisco is a gorgeous city...expensive as all hell...actually, it's the most expensive city in the U.S. with New York trailing closely behind...

the weather isn't that bad....ever venture out to New Orleans?? it's sunny & humid one minute...then the next it'll be dark like hell's freezing over and storming it's sweet @ss off...

lots of jobs in San Fran....tons of jobs in Silicon Valley...

I'm not sure about local sites for specific cities...usually stuff like that is linked up to a local newspaper website...at least for New Orleans our newspaper website has classified listings...

monster.com is a really good source...lots of employers check monster... :p

yeah, did that... i had an internship that worked out really great last fall, working for credit as well as getting $100/week! it was great. it was a commercial production company with their own studio. i was on set for a few shoots, which was good experience though not specifically aimed at what i want to do in the long run. good stuff though. i also was pretty much the main technically skilled guy there, setting up a g4 based editing suite and such... as well as keeping an eye on the 3 macs they had running... it also led me to an animation job for the producer there, which has since fizzled out (i did the animation and got paid and everything, but we haven't talked in a while and he had asked if i wanted to edit for his new company and such... so a bit of a bummer)

anyways, i can't do a credit only job in the summer because i'll have to pay the school per credit. crazy. and if i get a job in nyc, then i have to make money or else it wouldn't really be feasible for my parents to pay for me to live here. either way though, i've been looking.... there have been a few things.

unfortunately i live in southern pa (when not at school) and there's nothing creative for miles. unless the bikini car wash counts... yikes.

working as an intern was one the best experiences I've had...but u are right...it sucks not to get paid for the work u do...

I did mine for 8 months (they told me I could stay as long as I wanted)...and when it became apparent they weren't going to consider hiring me (new management...long...long story) I decided to leave...

but now I have that experience on my resume...having worked for an NBC affiliate station...pretty big deal to me anyway...I did news graphics for their daily news shows...he he he...

also the tech school where I was didn't offer any intern programs...so I was able to get them to allow me to do it...gave them good press for having one of their students involved with a television station... ;)

I'm gonna check the comparative prices between London and San-Francisco and Seattle...... London is just way out there when it comes to expense, really make NYC look cheap!!

Never been to New Orleans..... what's it like?? Creative work front? nightlife? etc etc.....

Actually Vancouver has just entered my mind aswell........

Have lots to hunt for now!! :D

New Orleans is unlike any other city in this country...or so I've noticed and been told many times...

there's always something going on every weekend...
bars stay open all night long...
u can buy liquor at the grocery store rather than having to go to a liquor store...
the restaurants here are absolutely incredible...we are known for our cuisine...
and events like Mardi Gras & Jazz Fest bring tourists from all over...
definitely a creative person's city...lots of history and ambience all over...
we have tons of artists here...too many sometimes...he he he...

but it is dirty...the economy here just sucks...it's only cold 3 months out of the year...summer's are ungodly hot....probably the worst condition streets I've ever seen...

it's really cool to come visit...but I'm ready to get out....

yeah, i'd like to get an internship like that, but the freelance work i got as a result was pretty good too.

the cbs and other network internships here are like 5 bucks/day.... haha. i think that's funny compared to the small place i worked for for 100/week... like 15 hours a week. plus credit... ahh. good times

jello, I got a few questions:

1) Did you figure out who I am yet?
2) Where was this internship at?
3)did you get it through the school?
4)what are my chances of getting this for the fall?

Also, EYE: Its not as easy to get a paying job here in NYC as you would think even with good creative skills. Especially with the animation industry cutting back right now. I got one, but it's unpiad and I have to work at school as well as do some freelance to be able to afford a place to live. I alos, dont know where Im living yet....goin to Brooklyn to look at a place tonight though...

It depends on the the type of job I guess. I applied to a lot of places and didnt hear back from very many. They just dont have as much to do right now and so dont want people cluttering up the space. it's weird, people never used to have trouble working for free but now I know a lot of people that cant find internships for the summer.

OOH, free labor. What I could do with that! Any of you Seinfeld fan? Remember when Cramer got an intern for the summer? Cramerica Lives!

I didn't realize the animation industry was that tight. Is it for any particular reason?

again, another resume with a great set of skills

when one has many skills in his/her trade, make sure to target the resume to the organization/individual you wish to reach and always have a plain, traditional one page, text-only version of your resume handy

some organizations accept the non-traditional resume, but if you are in doubt and have to come up with a quick resume due to time constraints, stick with the more traditional (some say boring) resume

a traditional resume can have action words like "managed" instead of "worked" or use other words like "facilitated" and "created"

sometimes in a large enough organization where there are separate departments, an hr officer may not know some of the more obscure jargon of your field of choice

an hr professional has so many other concerns that dictate the field of personnel management, that is is hard to remember some of the little used jargon

before i was an IT person, i was a full time person in the gardening and landscaping field...i would say that i knew about fertilizers but i would never start using terms from the periodic table to try and show off my education on the topic, ie) n-p-k breakdowns of fertilizers used for different plants within the western garden zone 17 area;)

since the resume was posted I went and took a look. Seesh, it took for ever to display on my screen - and I'm using a 667 TiPB in OS9.2.2. What's up with the pdf or is it my problem?

If its a pdf issue you might want to do some optimization or go to a more traditional look.

Also for Jef, how much 'help' does it provide to have a non-traditional resume?

D0ct0rteeth ...
very cool....very "non-traditional"....but duke is right....it's 1.5 meg...while it didn't take but 13 seconds to download on dsl here...it could take longer elsewhere....maybe u should think about scaling it down a bit...

as far as non-traditional resumes goes...for me it was completely about being bored and personal preference...I thought about it, and since I'm going for a creative position...I decided doing something a bit out of the norm would suit best... :p

I will address the file size in the next revision and will change it to a pure vector based pdf file.. it was argueably short-sighted of me.

It was intended for downloads from my website... and printing to a printer.. not viewing in a browser... I need to update some content anyway... thanks for all the input

im non-traditional to a fault (you should see it printed on velum :))

1. no
2. at a studio at union square..
3. yeah, i got it through careernet.. didn't have anyone help me find it though, just found it on a search and owned it up. ha.
4. for that particular place you mean? hmm... i have no idea. pm me about it as i'd rather not talk specifically about the company over the net. you'll understand once i tell you. i think.

however, it's definitely not a big company and i don't think anyone would know them by name. just don't want to take any chances.

at this point the positions i'm going for are less about getting my resume in gear for them as much as finding that they exist! ha. my best chance as of now is to get some job helping a videographer or something near where i live in PA. assuming they know what video is those crazy hicks...

no worries... ;) I like it when people ask questions...better than just making assumptions...

I am a production artist for a print company...we have dsl and I control email & such...so naturally I'm wired all day long...

we sometimes have lots of downtime...where upon I come to macrumors to relieve the boredom...I will admit I screw around mainly because I can...

things are pretty easily laid back here...but when I'm working on a big project...I won't show up for more than a handful of posts within a few days...

also I play around late at night on the net...my girlfriend moved 2 months ago and I won't be moving to live with here until august...so I surf the net at night...

I also don't sleep much...so that contributes to my "problem"... :p

I figured, the streets were also pretty desolate in that film...... :p

Jazz is pretty fantastic, I certainly love chilling out to it, suprisingly I've yet to find a really cool Jazz night in London, the Jazz Cafe in Camden has some amazing artist playing, but it just doesn't have that....hmmm how do I put it..... Smokey Jazz cellar bar'ness about it.....

there's a bar in North London that has alot of freestyle jazz, that is pretty cool, you now the stuff, the mc, introducing the solo's and stuff, and everything full improvised whilst playing, I just love that Jazz........

i'm suprised that there isn't top notch radio stations though..... although as you say, they're there if you hunt em down...... :D

absinthe a personal fave of mine...... well when you can get the proper stuff and not the watered down stuff that seems to frequent the majority of London bars......

Absolutely incorrect!

The wifi issues are only going to be a problem if the power levels are really high, as in the large area broadcast wireless networks (campus wide). I have a Linksys wireless router and the XM Satellite radio and it works fine. Besides, if it does become a problem you can always mount the antenna outside a window. And it remote areas that aren't in the repeater network, you'd have to do this anyway. XM has two geosynchronous satellites, one on the east coast and one on the west coast. You could drive from Maine to San Diego and listen to the same station the whole way. The radio truly does rock!

I've been back and forth from DC to Florida twice now with the radio and I can't tell you how much nicer it has made the trip.:D

No, but there are other alternatives there, but I'm not sure about them. Since the satellites are in geosync, they basically can only transmit data to a footprint on the surface. Although, you'd probably be able to get reception in the Carribean, Mexico and Canada - but you'd have to buy and register it in America.

They game sounds interesting, keep me informed.

The world seems rather precipitous right now.

I've been refining the Game for about 2 years now as to it's structure and concept. Now I need some code heads to work with me on building the Database and World manager.

I was going to use a modified Unreal engine for the Client end UI so excellent artistic talent will certainly (and continually) be needed.

hmm. i'd love to find a graphics/animation job. i'm always on the lookout. my parents (and myself) don't much like the idea of me not working this summer...

Im gonna have to go along with Jello here. Though I do have stuff for the summer the more the merrier. Also, in the future I will be wanting animation work and anything I can find that doesn't involve me hating myself is good in my book.

Mischief: please keep me in mind if you need people, even if you just want to see some work I have done, or I could do something specific, or even a resume. I'm interested, not definately comitted (sp?), but it sounds very fun/promising.

Okay. It looks like there's some good talent out there in Graphics and CGI.

As you can see above I'm looking also to develop an RPG running the Unreal Engine. Those of you who are interested please E-mail me at: mischief6xr@mac.com

I have 3 ideas to write up. The content of the Talent I recieve word from will establish which one gets developped. The choices are:

1. An online Fantasy RPG running the Unreal engine with unparallelled world-realism.

2. A 'Net-based meta-LLC for consulting out E-business to the partner contractors in CGI, Tech support and Legal services.

3. The Big Plan. Save the world, spread Peace and Harmony, stimulate economic growth in the 3rd world.

Please indicate which one you are interested in and I will elaborate as possible.
