View Full Version : Are you Into Music?

arn

Who fancies themselves an "expert" or enthusiast of a certain genre of music?

Like Classical, or Punk, or Rap etc...?

The best I can say is I'm pretty well versed in 80's music... but not necessarily any specific genre, otherwise.

Anyone?

arn

p.s. there is a reason my asking too. :)

EBM, Electro, Synth pop, industrial, goth, dark wave, and future pop.

And a bit in trance

I'm an expert in good music. :D

no. I'd say i'm pretty well rounded in 80s stuff, downtempo/trip hop/trance, jazz and "shoegazing" indie from the early 90s.

not an expert, but my main musical knowledge is of the late 90s-current punk/hardcore scene..

i don't know much about the early punk scene, mainly because what i've heard of it, the sound doesn't interest me... ie, ramones, etc..

Obviously I'm not bad on recording music either.

my best areas of knowledge in music would be 60s/70s classic rock and to a lesser extent indie/experimental music.

I would call myself an expert on pop even though I never listen to it.

I tend to watch MTV when i watch TV (which isnt often), so i feel I am very knowledgeble on top 40/pop music.

Im pretty damn knowledgable when it comes to metal too. Nu metal mainly.

I'm pretty well versed in all 80s and early 90s post-punk/underground stuff (though not goth). E.g., Foetus, the Jesus & Mary Chain.

Also quite versed in early 90s acid jazz,
90s ambient & abstract/experimental electronica (e.g., Nightmares on Wax, Kruder & Dorfmeinter, etc),
trip hop (e.g., Tricky), some D&B.
Plus some recent retro space age pop.

My current favorite is Amon Tobin (electronica), though I'm not keeping up with the stuff much anymore. I'm also a big fan of Nick Drake, who was a British singer-songwriter in late 60s/early70s. Also know a lot about late 60s stuff such as Donovan, Doors, Janis Joplin.

So what's this about? There's some DJs posting on the forums on a regular basis, they'd probably be very useful for whatever arn needs.

Nick Drake. MAYBE one of the most underrated songwriters of all time. My band is gonna do a massive attack-eque cover of "at the chime of a city clock" and i'm super excited about that.

You mention some great bands there true.. do you like stereolab and/or boards of canada? Thievery Corporation?

if you ignore how the new romantics looked... actually some of them looked cool.... but alot of the music was so innovative.... especially the structures.... I'm listening to the OMD Peel Sessions, and it's so different to their later uber-glossy sound... it's like all analogue and bontempi synths.... dark stuff!! :D :p :p

It's still hard to beat Uvox's 'Rage In Eden' though for seriously dark synth music.... :D

I just had to reply this one...

<heavy-brag>
Well, considering I'm a musician, composer, arranger and producer, and that I'm studying at the finest jazz division of a conservatory of music in the whole of Northern-Europe, and got Norway's best jazz musicians as teachers, and play several concerts every week, and are recording a lot of music every year, and have been playing the piano since the age of 1, and is among Norway's best when it comes to musical theory and performing jazz and music based on improvisation, and started my studiocareer at the age of six, yes, I would consider myself an expert.
</heavy-brag>

I also play drums, guitar, bass, and on the piano I've been playing jazz, classical, progressive rock, other rock, lot of pop and several other genres.

But when it comes down to knowing artists and songs by name, year, etc. I completely SUCK!

My taste in music is very broad so I don't know enough and don't want to be an "expert" in music. Some people I know would tell you about which producer and studio a song was recorded in, and how that affected the single... I don't really care that much to know that kind of detail. Mind you I've been getting pretty good with all the songs on my iPod, I can usually name the song title and artist in the first few seconds.

...but I still lay claim to being a pop-culture Jedi master
;)

BTW in the new version of "Boys of Summer" by the Ataris they only changed one line.
Instead of the original "I saw a dead-head sticker on a cadillac." (that's the greatful dead for some of you who are more into Nelly, Justin and the like)

The Ataris version goes "I saw a Black Flag sticker on a cadillac."
... just the kind of useless triva that my brain stores for some reason.

I consider myself a listener.

I can take just about anything (save for country, generally speaking - don't like the twanginess). No particular pidgeonhole for a style that I like - generally everything.

Played lead Sax & Flute & Clarinet in high school as for playing, and Cello and Paino in Elem/Junior High.

I listen to jazz and ambient music while working, so I don't have to pay attention but can enjoy it nonetheless. I listen to modern rock/alternative when driving my car, and listen to bluegrass when I'm cleaning the house. Sometimes rap slips in... sometimes top 40... just depends on the time and the mood. But I have a 20 gig iPod for a reason. :D

Music is my job. I get about 15 new cds a day from every major label plus the tiny ones i care about.

usually i get music about a month before it is released, sometimes much earlier. If there's something i want, 9x/10 i know the manager or someone somehow related and can pick up the phone and get it.

I'm into r&r right now, but i'm also into underground hip hop, electronic, IDM (i hate saying IDM) and just about everything. I hate country music, but i understand it and can appreciate a good song when i hear it.

I have to keep up with current trends, but i get off on obscure/hard to find/experimental music.

I was working in Metropolis studios in about 93, mixing some band or other, and the door opened and David Bowie stuck his head in and said "sorry, wrong studio, nice drum sound..." I saw him a bit later in the kitchen, and we had a good chat over a cup of bad coffee.

Trance is something I've always liked but it's mostly gone from the melodic emotional stuff it got it's name from to pounding formulaeic cheese of the worst possible kind in recent years.

I do love trance though, overall, BT and PVD are my favourate producers of the genre, every tune that's categorised as trance or at last 'progressive' dance has taken a little from their earlier stuff as inspiration.

Breaks aswell, either nu school or drum n' bass. Hybrid, The Chemical Bros, Reprezent, DJ Rap, Plump DJs. all that stuff is excellent to my ears. I suppose I could put portishead is this category too.

I like a bit of industrial stuff, like NIN and Filter, not too much into rock really, Linkin park seemed interesting at first but they bore me now. Got the chilli's latest album and listened to it a few times.
