I think I have seen pictures of people's desktops where they have gotten rid of that white area behind the dock. Is this actually possible and how do I go about doing it?

Try going to versiontracker.com and doing a search for "Dock" and "Translucent" I think that is what it is under. Just a sec, I will go and find the link.

the only problem I find is whenever u click and miss the icon which u are aiming for....it clicks whatever window is below...sometimes causing a task to take place which u wouldn't want...
still great hack! ;)
