I’ve had (had) a MBA about 7 days, the 80gb kind.
• Sharp edges – chafes the underside of my forearms
• Stiff little Chicklet keyboard is still MacBook amateurish. You won’t type novels on this little toy.
• This is NOT a fast computer at all. Don’t expect great things in that department. I’d guess 25% the speed of the MBP (for the same $$).
• The 1.6 units are known to overheat one core and shutdown unit – especially when playing little utube videos.
• Lightweight. Good to carry around the house.
• Cool mouse pad.
• It’s got OSX.
• Battery life is abysmal. And it’s soldered in/inaccessible. You’d better have that charger/cord in your pocket. You’ll need it in about an hour.
• Memory is soldered in and not changeable, upgradeable. Pathetic.
• Huge 1” bezel around the screen. This is just ugly. Reminds me of 15 year old laptop designs with 7” of plastic around an 5” screen.
• Same screen that’s on the MacBook (just LED lit). A 4 year old design. Come on, Apple.
• No ethernet. So for you techies give this one back and get out the MBP.
• With 70GB available, unit is almost unusable. 29GB gets eaten up by the OS. Apple has not cleaned up OSX to fit on this model (unused drivers, bloat). That would easily give another 10GB.
• PATA drives are unavailable on commercial market. Especially the SSDs. It’ll be year before you can get one prior to being shipped to Apple.
• Toyish. Impractical. Slow. No storage. I would have settled for a 1% increase in size/weight for ports, higher res screen, battery compartment, memory access, SATA etc.
• WAY overpriced. Same $$ gets you a 15” MBP, and it’s only 1.5 lbs more.
• Steve is playing with new MBP design that most are waiting for with excitement.
• Apple is arrogantly oblivious to customer input, needs.
• Windows Tablet machines are a LOT more productive (and small) than the MBA. But it’s still Windows.
• Steve’s brother-in-law still runs engineering/design. He has carte blanche. Wife claims the MBA is “so cute”, and ordered it into production ahead of MBP.
• Steve wonders why stock prices have fallen from $200 down to $110. Steve thinks “The customer is the enemy. They’re all hackers – all of them. I’ll show those bastards”.
Apple has made this machine nothing more than a big Ipod, with a silly little cellphone speaker.
The MBA fits ONE market model – the flashy, angry liberal weenie, party social crowd, living in NY, that’s filthy rich from the Democrats. The ones that don’t give a hoot about the computer within – just to be seen with one.
But it’s good to be back with my MBP – a 3 year old design that caught Steve off guard. “If I’d had known the MBP was going to do this well I’d have hamstrung it somewhere”. Steve continued “But that’s ok, I’ll get them on the new MBP”. Sigh. Still the best computer on the market, sans the Sun M9000.
