View Full Version : Avatars

Do you feel that avatars should remain stationary for as long as the individual remains at MR, or should they be an act of personal expression, changing as much as the creator?

I happen to feel the 2nd and I am really happy with my new 'tar, as am I liking the new tars by mr. a and eye

so what is your view on avatars? Stay stationary so they act as a sort of redflag when scrolling? or are they an act of expression?

nice 'tar there tazo... ;)

this could make for a decent poll if we could...

I'm for changing them up. Sure, they make it easy to identify members by color/specifics, but it's good to change or reinvent yourself from time to time. :D

Avatars are definitely a matter of self expression, and "making your mark" on the forums. They distinguish your posts, and make them easy to pick out when scrolling through a page.

People don't want to be stuck with the same 'tar forever, heck people sometimes want to change their nicknames.

I've gone through 5 or so, personally, and I'm sure this isn't my last...;)

heh thanks eye, that was about the 12th tweaking in PS, playing around with brightness/contrast, crop, sharpness, blurring :)

And is it possible to make a poll after the fact?

Whether your avatar changes or not should be up to you. My first avatar freaked people out, so I changed, and then I changed again. I'm sure I'll change yet again sometime. Which is good!

Please leave us free to change our avatars at whim! :)

I like to keep my avatar, Mac OS X user picture, and iChat AV buddy icon synced.

Just a little related to the topic; I wonder when the next avatar contest will be? :D

Also, I think the 'tars definitively is a matter of self expression too. But right now, I'm starting to get a little tired about my 'tar... And I can't change it too, since I only was allowed to use it caus I won the avatar contest back in 2002.

i kind of like seeing a new 'tar under someone's name. it's the MR equivalent of "hey, nice haircut!"

or in some people's case, "have you always had that steel post through your nose?"

Bowie, Bowie, Bowie! Huzzah!

Seeing him at the Fillmore Auditorium here in Denver on January 19, 2004. Front and center, baby, front and center. I'll grab Slick's ass, rub Gail's head for good luck, and let the show begin!

i like to change the 'tar now and then, but i believe in at least keeping with a theme. i've abandoned rena for my current 'tar though.... i don't know how long that will last.

Keep 'em fresh. I only wish that (and signatures, too) they remained static in your old posts, rather than being updated, when you make a change.

I like the changeable 'tar (I've nearly got my own!).

My only big *sigh* on the subject is that when you change your avatar, it changes for ALL you posts, past and future. Can't ever go back to see someone's old one. Have the same thoughts about the sig. line.

I know that the storage requirements for all past avatars would quickly get out of hand, but it would be neat to be able to see past ones -- maybe a sticky thread like the photos thread?

yes - all the time.

And when it happens, things are usually done to fix it.

Bad things: motion too fast or not smooth (this is the biggest one)

annoying images - scem0's face spinning was one. Motion and an annoying image....;)

bad color choices

Usually you can bother enough people that you eventually get the idea to change it.

Of course we should be able to change our 'tars. It's like... something we should be able to do.

Changing usernames would be a much stickier situation, though. How are people supposed to know who's who otherwise (like I remember this one user named Dukestreet...).

BTW, nice 'tar Mr. Anderson (hmm... that user seems familiar), hadn't seen that one yet (now that I think about it, it seems like Mr. Anderson is the only person who's ever changed their name, at least the only one I can think of).

mine is based on artwork from a particular book series that i'm obsessed with, so it's not likely to change any more than it's changed my entire time here. altho the next book comes out in what, 3 days? so i may find artwork from that book, if such an edition comes out... probably not tho...

personally i don't care if people change them often, tho it is a bit more difficult to identify people... most people i can easily identify by name, so it's not an issue.

;) heh, i kinda like it when they are enthusiastic about getting one. i was, myself, once upon a time... heh heh. i don't mind people planning on an avatar and posting a whole lot to get one, as long as they post substantively. if you can get 80 posts a day by helping people in the mac discussion/help boards, more power to you--people like that are useful on the site. it's spamming that's annoying, of course.

hhmmm a 'tar thread eh?

i think they should be changed sometimes, but i also think that they should stick to a theme, then it's easier to recognize the 'tar. and after someone's seen a 'tar they always associate that particular style or subject matter with that person.

i'm going to change mine soon. i'm thinking of keeping it all kinda pixellated, then i might slowly move away from that to something cartoony.

I have always found titles such as "God" or "Demi-god" to be too presumptuous and might lead to an inflated ego (such as my own). I prefer something a bit more humble. A title such as "Contributor" focuses on the fact that I have given money. I would prefer that the focus of my online identity not be defined in financial terms. I understand that the money is important to those that work and pay to keep MR going. Nevertheless, I would rather be defined by what I post, not what I pay. I am quite comfortable with the default titles that are related to the number of posts. However, if I were to choose a special title it might be "Emperor of the Universe". ;) :D

I think the 500 post limit is a good idea, I know it's officially the line that post count doesn't matter, but it's still a blast to see your rating climb and your status change. Getting the avatar makes you feel like you belong a little.

I think it's a shame it isn't a little bigger, as some ideas simply don't work in the 50x50 pixel frame.

Although i don't mind having to wait till 500 to get my avatar, because i think if you contribute 500 posts then your an established member of this community, and do in fact regularly come by.

But how does it deter spamming? in fact i think it would encourage spamming because people would just post random comments in order to get the post count up.

i've seen plenty of, "cool" "ditto", "yup", "exactly", "no" and "yes" - posts around, probably just from people that wanted to say something to get the count up

;) Yes I tried to pick up the keys at the station but I couldn't fit my ego through the door. I was so embarrased that I now have my ego on a diet of humility.:D

Seriously though, I would like a humble title. How about "macrumors janitor"? No, that would be better for moderators. Maybe "macrumors citizen"...meh, whatever.

Moderators prevent spamming :D

And the 500 posts is a good idea and I think it should stay.

absolutely

LOL... you though i was gonna leave at one word didn't you... :D

I think that the 500 is a good number, eve if you post 3 or 4 post a day average, you can still do it in about 4 months and if you show the interest in sticking it out that long, then you deserve a tar for your effort, and it means that your a serious contributor

if you do it in a week or two where your posting like 50 post a day then your either one of two things, very dedicated to the forum and deserve a tar, or your spamming the forum with senseless posts that or stupid and in no way helpful or effective to anyone.

If you are the first... great, welcome to forum and we hope to here from you, if you are the second - one of the mods will get to you, delete your account and ban you from even being able to read this forum.

i've been here for about 2 months now, with an average of 8 posts a day, and i think I'm less then 40 posts away from 500 - i think, maybe the mods will disagree, that i have contributed pretty well, and i have no problem with having to prove that i deserve the status of having a tar.

Well, the mods punish spamming, but like custodial sentancing, they really don't prevent it, your hardcore spammer NEEDS to spam, it's a genetic thing I think.:D ;)

One of the reasons MR is the forum that it is is the constant and unwavering attentions of our beloved mod krew...

I'm sure I meant to say that out loud.:D

Agreed.

I think if you spam 500 posts:
a) People are gonna notice
b) If you spammed it... your already banned.

Look posting in moderation is good.

My week looks like this...
Moday: 3
Tuesday: 5
Wednesday: 1
Thursday: 10
Friday: 15
Sat: 2-5
Sunday: 400 ;) More like 20-30

there is no reason you need an avatar so soon anyway.

ha, well, go look in the archives for the Avatar contest. The limitations, 50x50 pixels and under 20k make it quite difficult to get the results you might be hoping for. Given that, I look forward to seeing yours ;)

I was actually surprised that I got mine to work, i thought that the 16 frames it required might have taken up too much space

Mmkay, I know I am a ways away from getting an avatar, but where is a good place to find one?
Would it be possible to use an icon from the Icon Factory or from Xicons.com?
How do you make your own, do I have to have Photoshop?
How can I incorporate animation into my avatar?

Thanks! :D

Nearly any type of graphics software can be used to make an avatar; for mine I used frames from a quicktime movie that I edited for size with photoshop. I used GifBuilder to animate it.

I use photoshop, because i have photoshop, and i use it for every other task, i through mine together pretty quickly... i wanted to get it up as fast as i can...

for animation, if you have photoshop, image ready can animate. but if you can download free gif animators off of Download.com, or for that matter free graphics programs if you don't have photoshop..
