During the past several days, I have been getting what appears to be random "unresolved kernal trap" messages. They scroll for about a minute and then it freezes. Any advice on how to get rid of this??

I did an update to 10.3, not a clean install. Could this be why?

(17" 1Ghz G4 Powerbook)

Have you tried to Verify/Repair permissions in the Disk Utility?? maybe that will help.
