40. Miller says, "Had Willy been unaware of his separation from values that endure, he would have died contentedly while polishing his car”. He was agonized by this awareness throughout the entire play. Prove that.
Willy was tormented by his knowledge that he was not living up to the American dream, but was unwilling to reveal this fact to those closest to him. He lied to Linda about where he was receiving his pay, and was constantly insulting Charley, who was the only person attempting to help him. He had unrealistic expectations for his children, Biff and Happy, in order to compensate for his own unfulfilled ambitions. If he had been able to accept his life as it was, and not push away the kindness of others, he might’ve been able to find inner peace and spend his last days blissfully enjoying the simplicities of life.
42. Trace the remarkable things.
The remarkable things that occur in the book are as follows.
1. When Willy says that he can't roll down the windshield on his car and Linda reminds him that he said he rolled it down on his trip to Boston.
2. Willy realizing that Charley is his only friend
3. Biff breaking down in tears at Willy’s feet and showing Willy that he and cares and loves his father.
