View Full Version : What is up with saying (JB'd)?!!!

What is up with all these people referring to their iPhones and iPod Touches as "JB'd"? If it you spell that out it is "Jailbreaked"!! That sounds like improper english to me; e.g.

"I jailbreaked my iPhone yesterday.".

Instead I think people should abbreviate it to "JB'n" as in "Jailbroken". I think this sounds much better.

"I jailbroke my iPod Touch yesterday."
or
"My iPhone is jailbroken."

Sorry this is a sort of rant. It's no big deal but, I just wanted to get this out there and see if anyone else has thought the same thing or agrees with me.

/Jeff

that's something that's always gotten on my nerves as well. I've actually seen a large amount of people SAYING (read: typing) "Jailbreaked"... It just grates on my nerves.

Trying to teach grammar (or hoping people will follow any grammatical rules) on the internet is like trying to herd bees.

I do wish you luck on your quest.

I say (type) JB'd because it looks better than JB'n, not to mention the fact that apostrophe+n implies 'ing' which is the wrong meaning entirely. Apostrophe+d implies past tense ...

Just out of curiosity, do you get upset when you read "KO'd" too? ;)

Yes. Inappropriate contractions and wrongly placed apostrophes bother me to no end.

It's a curse. Seriously.

Oh, and people who use i.e. and e.g. bother me. They only use the terms to sound smart, but I would say most people don't use them correctly.

You'd better get off the internet now then - if something as minor as an apostrophe 'bothers you to no end,' you might be better off unplugged. ;)

Can you image the meltdown if someone were to say they JB'd their iTouch ;)?

Ha ha, that's a good one. Thanks for a good laugh. I'm with you on the grammar thing, appleretailguy. We must keep fighting for good grammar on the internet.

GHHHHHHHHHAAAAA!!!
Internal meltdown!:D

But when you say itouch, it sounds like you are saying "i touch", implying that you touch sompthing, making it sound like you touch yourself, and therefore, gay.
for those that dont get what i said, basicly "itouch" makes you sound gay.

IIRC, iTouch was a Logitech trademark a few years ago.

Yeah, 'iTouch' is definately a 'gay' word, haha.

The whole 'i JaIlBREaKED my iTOUch T0dayZ!' really annoys me too. Do/Did these people have trouble in school?

That's just what happens with abbreviations. For instance, one would say KO'd for knocked out instead of K'd O. It used to annoy me a lot as well, but I guess I go used to it.

No, KO means "Knocked Out" and the way you say "KO'd" is kay-oh'd, not "knocked outed".

Maybe they're still saying it as an acronym but, adding the past tense to it as if to say "Jay-bee'd" instead of saying the whole word out as "Jailbreaked"... kind of like KO'd being pronounced "kay-oh'd"

"KO'd" doesn't bother me at all because that is exactly how you pronounce it. But I've never heard anyone say "I jay bead my iPhone." I've personally never seen an instance where a " 'n " is substituted for "ing". But maybe I just haven't noticed.

Wirelessly posted (iTouch 1.1.3 (JB'd): Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A93 Safari/419.3)

You'd better get off the internet now then - if something as minor as an apostrophe 'bothers you to no end,' you might be better off unplugged. ;)

What, you mean like I do in my wireless sig? ;)

I say JB'd because apostrophe + d implies past tense, and I say iTouch because 'touch' on its own looks strange. It's a verb, after all.

Lmao mental thread.

I would say the past tense would be "jailbroke."

"I jailbroke my iPod yesterday."

If you want to be anal about the terminology, why suggest another (albeit slightly less annoying) poor term?

Say..."I broke my phone out of jail!"....now you sound like you're a bad ass, yea!

I guess that is a difference. However, it still used to be a pet peeve of mine.

How about not using any kind of terms like that (i.e. (had to do it) Jailbroken, unshackled)? Let's just call it Improved (Imp'd).
