Momma always told me, "son, if it weren't for bad luck, you'd have no luck at all." Oh, truer words seem to have never been spoken. So our home got broken into Saturday night and all of our computer equipment seems to have somehow disappeared. Of course my initial reaction was, 'hey this is why we pay that ridiculous amount for homeowners insurance'. That was until I realized we have a $2500 deductible and one of the computers stolen was a friend's brand new Toshiba itty-bitty expensive thing they had me setting up for them, and that of course had to be replaced post-haste. I'm out the cash for that and then the deductible, which sucks of course.

My first goal is to find a new laptop for my wife. She had a black MacBook C2D. I'd like to replace it with another black MacBook (she's got some crazy thing about the color). Anyway, here's the items I need to replace at some point that maybe somebody's selling:

- Black Macbook. Any config is good, Core 2 Duo would be awesome
- a ton of stuff that was mine that I'm not going to worry about until my wife is situated

If anybody has a Black Macbook that they're thinking of getting rid of, please PM or email me. The insurance company is going to bend me over and take certain liberties with me on depreciation if I don't just get the stuff replaced before they're ready to settle the claim (so says my very helpful and genuinely nice adjuster Frank).

Keep in mind I'm a teacher and my wife is an artist (read not a whole lot of money here).

Some of you may remember me around here as the poor sap that hunted down a useless SOB doing massive cashier's check COD fraud a few years ago and gained a completely unexpected 15 minutes of fame. I know I've helped some of the rumor community since then track down their own evildoers, so maybe someone can throw me a bone?

Have you looked in the refurb store? $1500 notebook depreciated would probably still give you enough to score a black 2.0 C2D refurb for $1000 or so, with tax. They have the 2.2 refurb up right now for $1050, but if you wait around, they'll update it pretty regularly. I've seen C2D 2.0's up as recently as a few weeks ago, so theyre still being refurbed and sent back out. Besides, people around here are probably asking around the same price, so you might as well get the full year warranty with it.

Sorry man, all that sucks. Best of luck to you!

I agree with Jackie on the refurb idea (refurb is slightly cheaper than the ed store - I researched it for a blog post ).

Can you claim original mac ram in the stolen blackbook? That would give you a tidier sum back (4 gb is going for $600 at the apple store), then pick up aftermarket for $100 or so.

If you end up totally up the creek, I've got a core duo (not core 2 duo) blackbook we can discuss.

Again, as jackie said, best of luck!

Yeah, I'm probably going to go with the refurb. I'm going to give it a few more days before I make any decisions. However, I've got a pretty good offer on an older core duo model with applecare that I might bite on

thanks again for the advice and offers everybody.
