Well they are not hidden fees. They are international fees that you signed a contract agreeing too. You were not on the ATT network so what did you really expect? Also you were using data internationally which is extremely expensive. Up to $20 a MB.

This is well-known information, stipulated in the contract. International roaming (and yes Canada, as another sovereign nation that isn't the United States, IS "international") is extremely expensive, especially for data services like texting and mobile web browsing. There's nothing you can do. Time to work a summer job.

You were informed. It was in the contract paperwork that you probably signed without reading. At the very least, always do some research or even give support a call before planning on using a phone anywhere outside of the US.

Sorry.

Call and see if they will backdate the International Roaming plan. You left US soil so you roamed. They may or may not backdate it and that should reduce your plan to a more reasonable rate. If they don't I am not sure what to tell you.

Were they supposed to inform you at the border when you entered Canada? It doesn't matter if you were in Canada or overseas. You were still in a foreign country that doesn't even give its own citizens flat rate data plans.

Did you turn off data roaming? That's been said here time and time again. Even if you're not actively using the data functions of the iPhone it's using the data unless you turn data roaming off.

There have been endless threads here about foreign use. I'm sorry but you should have paid attention to them. AT&T isn't required to inform you of anything special, it was in the contract you (or should I said your father) signed. You should have looked at their international page (http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/) if you needed more information.

It's not "BS." You went to Canada. You used the phone. You're liable for everything you ran up. Ignorance really isn't a defense.

Roaming charges are not hidden. They are fully explained on the agreement you signed (whether electronically or in person) and the reason why international roaming is an optional feature. If you did not enable your phone account for international use, you may have some bargaining power.
Data service in Canada (Rogers) is extremely expensive, and one of the reasons why iPhone is still not available in Canada. If you are traveling to Canada, keep Data Roaming setting under Settings | General | Network to off position.
Just how many is "text somewhat"? To run a $700 bill, you'd have to send lots of text, even at 50 cents per SMS.
Call AT&T customer service and explain your situation. Be polite and do not argue about "hidden" fees (unless you have not asked for international access in the first place). Chances are, they will reduce your $700 bill to hundred or two.

I guess they had the OP in mind when they put this on their website.

Can I use my iPhone internationally?

iPhone is a quad-band GSM phone and will work around the world. Before you travel, make sure that international dialing and roaming are enabled through AT&T and that the places you’re going offer GSM coverage. International roaming rates apply for any voice or data usage outside the domestic coverage area. Substantial charges may be incurred if you take your phone out of the U.S. even if no services are intentionally used. Visit www.att.com/wirelessinternational for international roaming rates and more details.

Geez You're NOT getting it. You were USING the phone off and on but the phone is ALWAYS roaming unless you specifically turned it off in the settings. That's been stated in threads here for months. It's not AT&T's fault you didn't read your contract or even the threads there on the subject.

Pay your bill and turn off data roaming.

Stop whining, it's your own fault for not reading the terms and conditions. Now be a man and pay up.

The OP _is_ a kid... and an immature one at that.

Look, you MAY (emphasis) be able to get AT&T to backdate an international roaming plan, if you're VERY nice, VERY polite, and explain that you had no idea, etc. Or you may not, and will just have to take it like a man and learn an expensive lesson.

Well since you attitude is terrible you'll have no chance in hell of every getting your way out of it. If you were polite you could give them a call instead of asking random people on the internet who really can't do much for something thats your own fault.

I've personally never sucked the dick of an AT&T employee, but that's just me. I do not think that by telling you that you were careless with your phone and did not do the proper research prior to leaving for a trip means that anyone is sucking dick. I mean, I'm all for that and all, but really kid, man up and stop thinking that by equating a pack of strangers to dick suckers simply because they were trying to help is going to get you anywhere.

Exactly.

Do you want to know how to get out of it? First, drop the attitude and stop thinking that you are somehow entitled to something more than anyone else. The simple fact that you said "I text'd somewhat" then complained about 50 cents a text tells me that you didn't text "somewhat" you text'd quite a bit. Too much if you ask me.

Not only is it clear on the website about the terms of international use, on my first and only paper bill received by AT&T I got some flyer about international charges. Not only has AT&T covered themselves with little to no member sucking, they have informed you repeatedly.

You made a mistake. How do you get some of the charges down? Again, drop the attitude and call AT&T. No one here can fix your bill.

You didn't read the contract, clearly. I did when I signed it, and then again when I left for the Dominican Republic. Solution? Turned off Data Roaming, made very few calls, and only sent a few SMS because I knew it was 50 cents a pop. Total bill = $9.00

If you're gonna have mommy pay for everything you owe it to her to know what the hell you're doing with her money.

Bingo. And I think skippy came to the realization that there's no way in hell he's getting an iPhone 2. I hope you like that TracFone, dude. Happy birthday.
