We've seen plenty of subject matter here...macros, moons, flora & fauna, night shots, cemetery, etc. But, we haven't really gotten into self portraits yet. Let's see some, shall we? ;)

so i was trying to get this normal shot of me falling asleep as i was talking to my mom on the phone--granted, i wasn't asleep talking to her, i was playing with my camera, but i thought it'd be funny. so i took a bunch of shots of myself. this one was one of the first--i accidentally left the shutter on like 2 seconds or something, maybe more. looks like something tazo would enjoy.

We used to have clients but now it's just a personal studio.

There are so many studios now that it just isn't worth it to compete - supply and demand, you know... plus I have so much material that needs to be recorded I could work til I die and never finish...:)

Heh thanks.

I am looking for a job, today I applied to about the 12th grocery store ;) Hoping for a callback :)

I would basically be honored to get a job doing any photography, so basically a minimal amount. :)

Ideally I would love to be able to put photography into my ultimate job, but I dont think I will end up going down that path. I have always been a creative person, I love coming up with movie ideas, marketing campaigns, amusing slogans :) I am the best friend to everyone in video editing at my school ;)

Thanks for the compliment, it means a lot :)

I will play around with it in PS tomorrow or so [I have the day off! Yeah] why shade it out? it looks cool? the problem with your picture is that it's too damn dark. you can almost see all the cool stuff on the horizon, all the nice colors, but it looks unnaturally dim. the lighting effects--reflections and the 4 beams of the sun--are fine. it's just too dark.

Perhaps I should crop it so less of the lower black foreground is showing?

I think you should get a job in creative stuff, either straight creativity like photography or writing or maybe in marketing with the creative angle. Not sure you'll be happy in the grocery world. I kow some creative people who are trying the retail thing and hate it.

If you were in town I'd have some stuff for you to do!
My little bro in law (pic attached) is a Junior at the High School here and is in the media dept.

Maybe you can figure out a plan to get paid to help with the online marketing of GenieSongs.com?

this is really messed up. just as i pulled this thread up, i was in the middle of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling stone."

"You used to laugh about
everybody that was hanging out,
now you don't talk so loud,
now you don't seem so proud
about having to be scrounging your next meal...
...
you say you'll never compromise
with the mystery tramp,
but now you realize,
he's not selling any alibis,
as you stare into the vacuum of his eyes,
and say, "do you want to make a deal?"
How does it feel
to be on your own?
No direction home
A complete unknown
Like a rolling stone..."

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy :) Geez I keep finding cool pictures I've done while trying to find one in my head (well two now)....BTW, does anyone know if iPhoto can import anything in it's folders automatically? I import photos (I wish it knew how to rotate my photos like canon's software does (at least it did in windows) because my camera remembers it's orientation) into iPhoto and then edit them in Photoshop and save them with (#) at the end in the same directory (# depends on my revision)....i want iPhoto to recognize those photos and also add them to a library...maybe I could write an applescript to add them to a second library called edited pictures? still I don't know how to write applescript either and can't find help on doing so....reminds me of lingo though from director...ok I'll stop talking now and add the new image :)

Those are cool...are they yours :) ::stands with hands on hip and slanted smile on face:: lol....anyways the only difference is, that land mass in the third would be taller than ANY land mass in my entire state :).....my mountain pictures all come from vacation...the highest point in Florida is (I think) 193ft. that's so small...in North Carolina you can't even tell when you've driven that high :)....also mine wa s of the eclipse, actually when I take pictures of stars and such planes always seem to fly over, so I got one this time as well on purpose of course :)...anyways thanks Genie! I love that expression on the kids face! Here's another shot, from the University of Tampa at this size you can't read the sign but it says caution deadly poision blah blah wuff wuff (to quote Hendrix :))....UT is beautiful, it used to be a really expensive hotel back in the early days of tampa...I took my color shot and made it B&W cause I like it that way :)

Thanks for all the comments on my 'waterfall' pic...Cataratas translates to waterfalls in case ya dun speak spanish. Course a picture is worth a thousand words -- in any language :)

I hope ya noticed that it's actually a log, with a small stream going over it tho ;) Not actually a waterfall :)

BTW zync, that picture of the fountain is awesome! You made very good use of an average consumer cam's white balance feature :)

Thanks zync. I am the same, I love waterfalls and rivers. The problem with the bush is due to an entire river that is a waterfall within sight of where I took the photo. The darn thing creates wind, and moved the bush! :)

There sure are. In fact I have a few shots of waterfalls that are is just drainage runoff coming down over a road cut. In the winter time you can literally count over a 100 waterfalls in a mile of road in many places in the mountains around where I live. Basically there is so much water on the ground that anywhere there is even the slightest drop you have a waterfall.

Here's an example of an oversized drainage creek.

Yeah we have lots of other things to but somehow in Oregon it nearly almost always involves water somehow.

We also have big trees, that sometimes fall when the ground is too wet from all the friggin water.

that's a really cool shot....actually Tampa, besides being the lightning capitol of the world, has a lot of rain....it's funny....we go to NC and everyone is like, aww it's raining again....being from Tampa we're sitting here like you call this rain? This is drizzle....in Tampa it's not rain until you can only see white and nothing else when you're standing in it...I'm convinced that in every other place it may drizzle a lot, but in never rains! You want rain? we've got the market cornered! And it rains nearly EVERY day of the summer in florida, well Tampa anyway....

I wish I had pics of Ruby Falls to show you guys, it's in Tennessee under a mountain, I think it's the largest underground fall in the world...no one knows where it comes from nor where it goes either....they've even tried dying it...it's really freaking cool! anyways here's the fall I talked about above...it was across from a supermarket....really weird, especially to a floridian....that's the nice thing about florida too, BTW...you're usually about thirty minutes from a beach almost anywhere in florida...and you can switch coasts in around and hour to an hour and a half (more in the panhandle though)...

Yes, it is Mt. Rainier. Though looking at it now I wish I had a digital SLR. I might have been able to fit the photo into a horizontal frame. I'm thinking once I get a job again a digital SLR will be in the near future. I'll still keep my S230 though as you can't beat the camera that you have with you. It's so small I can carry it with me at all times.

I love Mt. Rainier, I need to visit there again. I wish I had a digital SLR myself, but I am not unhappy with my S50. I always tote my Nikon N80 along on photo trips as a backup, but prefer digital. I'm sorry to hear you are out of a job. I wish you luck in your search.

I am also anything but unhappy with my S230 but you have to admit the optics and lens flexibility of the SLRs is far superior. Though as I said there are a lot of photos I just wouldn't ever get with the larger camera.

Long story short, I'm not really looking for a job anymore. I have one lined up but it will be February at the earliest before I make any income from it and probably April before I go full time. I'm just waiting for them to rebuild a building before we get started.

I agree, I would like to have a digital SLR, but I bet by next summer, there will be something in the same price range as the EOS Digital Rebel that blows it out of the water. :) My S50 fits in my glove box awful nicely!

Thanks Genie, I guess 8MP would be nice, but it seems my 5mp is doing everything I could ever ask of it. I also have this thing about really liking Canon products, they have proven themselves to be very useful and durable to me. The only gripe I have about my S50 is the symbols on the control dial wore off within the first few times I used it. Oh well, I guess that is what the on-screen display is for! :)

I'm sure they do but I would much rather buy an SLR camera from a camera manufacturer with a history quality and experience. Don't get me wrong Sony makes some pretty damn good electronics but to me a camera is much more then just a piece of electronics. Even a digital one.

Just checked on the Sony. Nice camera good evolution of the F717 but it's still not a true SLR with replaceable lenses.

Yeah- the rebel is 6.3 and that's almost always enough .

A good zoom lens would make it work just fine.

Sometimes a far shot with the stock lens doesn't work.

Dude. If you don't like fredmiranda, don't post there!!!

You do realize that the pic of a dog taking a dump being acclaimed as art probably IS art because it's technically perfect, wonderfully composed, subtley post-processed and otherwise, showing the kind of dedication these people have to their art.

You know, you have some kind of weird attitude. You have to grow up at some point and realize that not everyone is gonna bend over backwards to tell you how great you are.

The FM people see those noobs who post and then BEG for replies as annoying. So they ignore you. If you post and come across as someone who has a) no confidence or b) is gonna beg for photo critiques, then you're gonna get ignored.

If you tell your story, the reason you took the photo, the things you did, etc etc etc., sure, it might take awhile (these people are out taking photos. here, we're more often on our macs...hence the traffic, plus the exponentially higher amount of members), but the critiques you'll get are well worth the wait. Patience, man, patience. But if you come across as argumentative, lacking confidence, snobby against pros;), etc, you'll kinda be ignored.

You wanna see real "snobbery," go post on photo.net. I guarantee you'll be crying by lunchtime. Those guys will REALLY tell it like it is. I know Eye and I posted there for awhile and we definitely got the stuffing beat out of us.

FM's forums is one of the nicest communities out there and SO FAR from photo snobs, where only pros recognize pros. They just ignore people with negative attitudes. ;)

Not at all.

But it's the WAY you post. It's almost like you want people to reinforce the fact that you have talent. And artists, especially those with years of experience, aren't into the whole "rah rah rah"game.

We're more into passing on tidbits of information that you won't exactly realize, but will make you better.

BUt it's when you post, and then like, minutes later bump it and ask why no one has posted. They hate that.

Art is about the artwork. It's not about "notice me notice me notice me"

Very important lessons to learn here brah.

Tazo... no offense and everything, but could it be that you're jealous that they have such talented people there, and that you're not on that level yet?

I mean, seriously, you're a younggun and haven't been shooting for long.

Some of these guys have been shooting for twice as long as you've been alive.

Instead of slamming their pics of dogs and sewers, you glean some advice from them. And by the way dude, that's not a freakin' sewer. It's an underground tunnel and cave system. Jeez.

Either that, or use their "anything goes" inspiration to take some really edgy photos.

I mean, I go poke around abandoned buildings and junkyards for photos.

At the least, you could just let people make the art they see and not condemn them.

I mean, do you want me or someone else to sit here and slam your pics of sunsets and homeless people? That's been done a million times too man.

I feel art is mostly a reflection of one's soul, and a means to communicate that to the masses. I'm a pretty inward type of person, as I don't reveal much about myself to most people. More & more though, I've revealed tons about myself thru some of the photos I've taken. Sure, many of them may be low on the technical/quality scale, but they speak to people...I know this much.

Take my self portrait, for example. No one knows it, but that speaks volumes about me...more than most people here will ever know. It's just a reflection of what I would never reveal about myself to just anyone. Ironically though, most people don't get why I would take such a photo...heh.

As for mental wards, that was damned fun. :D

Right. Everyone THINKS like an artist on some level. How one communicates those thoughts is different. That said, the people with bad attitudes tend to get dropped to the bottom quickly.

Right. and as much as Tazo takes good pics, the guy who took the pic of the CAVE (it's not a sewer) takes pics just as nice. Just different.

To slam it and say that it's not as good as your pics.... is.... well... like this Baudelaire story.

In that story, Baudelaire is revelling in the fact that he has this wonderfully beautiful girlfriend.

They go to have a Coffee at the newly built town square, and they promise to always be alike, etc etc etc.

This homeless maily comes up to them, a crippled boy riding on his father's back, and a daughter walking alongside the father, holding his hand.

They comment on how beautiful the woman is, how she "glitters like the stars"

Her response? "Get these people away. I don't like them staring at me."

The moral of the story is that anything that's physically beautiful (or aesthetically pleasing if you will) like that woman (or a photo, etc) can be turned ugly by unhealthy attitudes.

And it's very true. Just IM me and ask me about my date with a racist chick who looked like Catherine Zeta Jones. :D

Sometimes its best to let the art or photo speak for itself. Focus more on getting better at what you do and worry less about what other people think.

Regardless how *good* any pic is, there will always be someone who doesn't like it and someone who will love it - its more of a subjective thing. Worry more on what you think - whether you like it or not and why. Knowing what makes it good or not is the key to learning here.

Don't push to get comments if they aren't coming and approach these things more humbly - you might find your get greater appreciation.

Perfectly said. Again, it's a source of communicating, not lobbying. Although, it nice to have someone say how much they hate a piece every now & then. ;)

I'm like that but my art isn't really a window into me...I cover my tracks :)

Agreed, I think that everyone, in this thread at least, has done a great job of posting, none of us have mentioned anything as to the quality we think of our own work though we all have some thoughts on our work...still it's worked out well because we haven't biased the minds of our viewers....you guys tell me you like my pictures not me...I like them, obviously, or I wouldn't have posted them...but knowing others like them is good, and has the benefit of showing me that either 1. I'm not crazy or 2. we're all crazy.....it's probably more of number two though....:D

I'm glad you feel that way..........eye, I'm sorry to say this but you're photos were the worst crap I've ever seen, it makes me want to prove it by showing a dog taking a **** which looks better than ANY of your photos....ah I'm glad I have that off my chest....:)

Just kidding obviously :D

The thing is, you summed it up brilliantly at the end. There's NOT MUCH different between tazo's homeless people and dog's ****ting themselves. It's all a form of expression, masterfully done, etc etc,

The problem I had (and Mr. A and Eye sum it up nicely) is that when you beg for attention, it makes your art less attractive.

I prefer to just throw up a few shots and not make a big stink about it, and if people react (good or bad) then great. If not, I go out and take more shots. I don't complain, whine, or even bash a forum on anothe forum.

I mean, think of it this way: Tazo goes to FM, posts a bunch of pics and wants people to tell him how great they are, though he hasn't established an identity there through critiquing others. Through forming some friendships and getting to know some of the posters there.

I know several of the people there, and while there are trolls and whatnot, it's 98% a very supportive and informative forum.

Taz gets his panties ruffled because people aren't falling over themselves to comment, and he takes it personally, while in reality it's just an unspoken rule of these type of communities. You have to go through a break in period, and can't expect to be a BMOC right away.

This, like photography and life, these things take time. :) Establish a personality. People there don't comment just to comment. They comment to help. And it would help if they knew what taz was doing, what he plans to do, his experience level, etc etc etc.

I think u are missing the point. It's not about saying "here I am," but rather a glimpse into the soul.

Take a look at Van Gogh's work. His periods of work reflect the torment he underwent in his own life through subject matter & use of color. During his later years, his use of yellow was very significant. Aside from an eerie comparison of the yellow spots people who suffered from digoxin toxicity, it's also said that people who overdose on thujone (related to his absinthe binges) tend to get yellowish tint to their vision. ;)

Also, it works here that not everything has been commented on...but that's more because we get caught up in conversations like this...and taken away from posting pics :)

So here's another from the other day when I was leaving class....it was kinda dark and brooding outside...I will state this time that this isn't one of my best obviously and that's not a draw for you people to give me extra flaunting :) Still I do like the composition itself...also it's shows a little of what a Tampa rain (read regular everyday rain :)) begins like...

Her two famed lines:

"you know gay people? what's that like? is it different?"

and my personal fave:

"oh. Congas make me think of black people, and black people make me think of dirt"

Luckily, the bartender (who i know) saw and decided to keep my glass full with FREE red wine. Sigh.

No, I got that....that's why I said window...you don't have to look in....but you could...though that's not how all of my art works...although for some people it is a "picture" of their inner self...oh and absinthe is such a strange drink...could be because I don't like black licorice?

Very true, though I doubt he really cared what type of critique he got, though negative ones are always best in terms of improvement, obviously....he's probably upset because no one commented either way for some reason or other...but thanks for agreeing with the end of what I said :)

Imagine my heart sinking when this hot chica turned ugly on me.

I totally felt like I was living a Baudelaire story. Such is my love life.

Which is why I spend oodles on $$ on camera gear. And go out in the woods and almost get struck by lightning.

and yea.

I dont think Taz minds neg criticism. Kid's got a lot of talent. But I think he misjudged the kind-of unwritten rules of these type of forums.

FM people aren't gonna bash (or even compliment) people who aren't human to them.

There's books out there abou the masks we can wear when using the internet. Forums like these can kinda put a more personal element into computr usage.

That'sa good thing, IMHO

My turn - one morning driving into work, looking at Rosellyn across the Potomac. All I had with me was my Canon point and shoot 3.2 MP - but I had to stop and take a few pics. ;)

BTW that lightning shot above doesn't compare to the stuff I've missed :) imagine lightning crawling over you like a spider....I was so close...one freaking second faster with the tripod....yes, tripod...I'm not that afraid of lightning....I'm not really afraid of death...he maybe it would make my pics sell millions for my family and friends :)

Another from the same night....I took them in a church parking lot right before my house...I had seen the storm far off when I was driving home from work so I went home and grabbed my cam and tripod and set out back the the lot which is conveniently perfect for nearly all storms near my house...plus people drive by and add their car lights to the pictures....ala this:

that's the thing - you can't have a contest where everyone posts a pic to the same thread. One thread per pic and then discussion can follow. Also one pic per member for each contest and some way of voting for your favorite (not winners necessarily ;))
