Is it the older one with the circular IR port or the newer one with the IR reciever like the MacBook?

This is the original universal dock with circular IR. It works pretty much with all iPod's.

Yes, the original works great with the iPhone (using it with mine). You get a message in the beginning when you dock and it goes away a few seconds after.
