This question goes out to all those edit dv for a living. After floundering around at my local university for a few years, I've come to the realization that perhaps a liberal arts education isn't for me. After filming several of the hikes me and a couple of buddies have done and editing them in iMovie, a passion was born. It was so enriching to edit film. To take this raw footage and attempt to tell a story and recreate the feelings by those felt at this and that particular moment in time. I even went as far as to purchase the Academic version of Final Cut Pro 3 after outgrowing iMovie and the slickgeethree filters. After taking a few FCP classes at an outreach college, it was obviously night and day in comparison to iMovie but that has not diminished my desire to learn. After my commitment with the Hawaii National Guard is over (11B) in 2006, providing I haven't been activated and deployed, I was looking at attending the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. They seem to have an excellent Film and Televison program, both which are still in its infantile stages here at the University of Hawaii. My question to those who edit film for a living is how have you broken into this field of work? By way of film school or via internships. A question me and a buddy of mine who shares the similar interest, wrestle with is when you're editing film that is not yours and a client is there providing input in what he or she wants done, does that same passion fade since you have no emotional attachment for what's in your timeline? Any input or comments would be appreciated for this wannabe film editor.
