s-video out

I have two weeks to make a video for a college. My school was kind enough to loan me a Ti-Book with S-video out. I want to set it up so when I edit at my house, the video is going through my television. When I plug in the cables, nothing happens. The book is older, running os 9.2 (!) so I'm not too framiliar with it. Do I need an adaptor, or am I just dumb?

did you either start it up with the cable plugged in, or wake it from sleep with the cable plugged in? that's all I had to do to get it to work on my PowerBook before I sold it.
