I am on a mission to construct a working 1G iPod from a number of non-functional ones I currently have.

If you have a 1G iPod that's sitting in the bottom of a desk drawer somewhere that's dead, showing some nasty icon, or otherwise non-functional, let me know - I might be interested in taking it off your hands.

I have no interest in boxes, packing, chargers, etc. - I have all of that. I'm just interested in putting together a working 1G iPod.

Hi there, what exactly do you need? I've got a few first gens lying around and could be persuaded to part with them for a reasonable price.

My latest "FrankenPod" has a good hard drive and display, but it's got a bad Menu button and a dodgy FireWire connector that won't make contact consistently.

I'm not sure what parts can be used separately for these, as I haven't torn one apart far enough to determine the details. I'm assuming the top section with the FW port and pause switch are probably all one assembly. As for the Menu button, I'm not sure if it's part of the front case or logic board.... I'm going to ear one of my donors down later today and see if I can figure it out..

Let me know...

Thanks,

MacDann

Unless the menu button itself isnt functional then it is the sensor on the mobo. The same goes for the firewire connector, it is soldered onto the mobo along with the hold swtich.

I gotta open this one up and see what's going on. If it's jut a matter of resoldering, I'm good....

Thanks,

Sorry to hijack your thread but I have a working 1G 5GB iPod. I've kept hold of it for so long because I have no idea how much it'd be worth. It's in it's original box (think I bought it in 2001). Does anyone have an idea as to how much this would go for?

I would describe it as being 'good condition' Some minor bumps and scrapes but nothing detrimental to it's performance.

I doubt it's worth a whole lot, based on what I've found.

I'm not trying to put one together so I can sell it for big bucks - I don't think they're worth all that much - I just want one for the fun of it, and to have it on the shelf for "show and tell."

In addition, unless you have the original packaging and other goodies that came with it, I can't see anyone wanting it, unless they're like me and just want one as an "antique," so to speak.

Collector here....

1st Gen iPods CIB (complete in box) are worth money...

Anything Apple CIB is worth more than without it...

True, but I don't see a big market for the 1G models unless it's a collector.

I opened my FrankenPod last night to discover that a PO (previous owner) had already attempted repairs, and in doing so, really goobered up the logic board in the process. The connections to the FW connector were hosed, and their soldering skills were questionable at best, based on the globs of cold solder I found in the case.

<sigh>

So I'll ask again:

Anyone out there have a bum 1G iPod with maybe a bad HD/battery/case/display they want to get rid of?

I have a good case, battery, display and hard drive.... looks like I need a new or working logic board....

Thanks to all for the help so far....

I have a semi-working one. The center click/headphone jack is messed up, but otherwise it seems to be functional.
Case is a bit messed up but it is fine and if you already have a case it doesn't matter really.

Thanks, but it sounds like yours has logic board issues as well, since the switch for the click wheel and the headphone jack are both soldered to the logic board....

I appreciate your response!

My click will just won't click at all, there could be something in the way or something, but idk.

That's possible, but the headphone jack is a big problem. If it's bad, there's almost no way you can repair it as a DIY job - it's just too delicate of a job to do for the average repair person and tools..

Well, either way, good luck with your project!
