View Full Version : If I drop my insured iPhone in the bath, do I get a 3G one?

I was just wondering...

I have an iPhone with monthly insurance giving me a 'brand new handset, not a refurbished handset' if my current phone was to be completely broken. I have before dropped my iPhone in the sink and had it replaced with a brand new factory sealed iPhone.

Since all the old iPhones have been sold and Apple has discontinued manufacture of them (I assume) will they replace the broken iPhone with a new 3G iPhone?

I'd like to know what you guys think.

Thanks, Jack

Ahh ok, but it'll be a refurbished one though right? But my insurance contract says 'New for old'.

And if it's equivalent value, won't it be the same price as a new iPhone?

i'd say you would get a 3g iphone in the unlikely event of your having another terrible accident.

It's also insurance fraud if you do it on purpose.

Oh yeah I know that. Even o2 customer service advisors tell you to drop your phone in the bath when there's a problem with it.

No, they don't. They'll get fired.

No, they don't. They'll get fired.

They do, they've told me to do it twice, with my Nokia N95 but I didn't have insurance, they said it saves them time.

If Apple doesn't have any first gen iPhones (which i doubt) then you will get a 3G iPhone.

I think it's a law actually.

No, they won't. Let's end this discussion on fraud.

Next time a bright idea like this pops into your head remind yourself that if you were as clever as you think you are, you wouldn't need to save money with a stupid scam.

Yeah this is what I thought, I'm sure that just because it's an 'Apple iPhone' normal law will still apply, I've had other product stolen and break, bikes, watches etc and if they're insured, you're given the newest model, it's standard. Unless they do have a reserve of old iPhones, but in the UK (where I am) there was an aggressive sale in order to clear-out all the iPhone stock, this is what's making me think...

you always get better if what you had isn't offered anymore. they can't give you something less equivalent. even if certain parts are better and certain parts are worse.

don't try and scam apple though. even though they float in money like any electronic company, it isn't right to do.

This is why I'm going through my homeowner, State Farm, for my iPhone 3G insurance. $32 a year, no deductible, and if I *really* want the next revision of the iPhone I can accidently break it.

They'll just cut me a check for the price I paid for my iPhone.

I have the money...but everyone knows money is made by seeing were money can be saved..it's called 'loss prevention'

looks like he may be planning to scam whoever provides the o2 insurance.

what law?

if you are under warranty, you are required to get the SAME item in return.

if the same item isn't made anymore, then you get the next best thing.

i'm pretty positive it's a law. you can't buy a $500 item and then it breaks, and they give you a $100 item.

IMO, they would look at the current market value of your 2.5g iPhone and then offer you a 3G iPhone plus you'd have to pay the difference.

How about you con artists just go SELL it if you don't care about your physical possessions?

If you unlock it, you'll get the money you need.

Yes, sell it, don't do anything illegal. It could come back and bite you on the ass.

first, this is an insurance policy not a warranty. second, it would have to be term of the insurance that they provide a new equivalent item rather than the value of the insured item. there is no uk law that i'm aware of requiring an insurance company to provide a new item in these circumstances.

if the Gen 1 is discontinued, they will give you the 3g 1 because it is new, the insurance company buys them from apple, so apple is not going to sell them a gen 1 iphone....TRUST me, lol! and let us know the outcome

I just wanted to hear what other people though, to test my thoughts, but so far nothing has been said that has altered what I think will happen.
