Well it sucks to not have AppleCare and then have your machine die a couple months after warranty expires. I'm pretty sure the iBook has a dead logic board by reading various posts. It seems to be a very common way for the iBook to die. Lines distorting the screen. now the screen is just black on starup chime. Won't boot from FW drive or display mirrored video.
Anyways, I was wondering if it would be better to sell the unit as a broken whole or somehow part it out. I know the screen is good, but the hinge is all of a sudden stiff. Don't know why though. The optical combo drive is good. The crappy part is that the battery can hold only about 20 minutes of charge or less I can't remember now. But if the hinge wasn't screwed up and the battery, I might have paid for the repair. Oh yeah I think the hard drive was going out too. I initiall thought that was my only problem. But the lines were reproduced on my Firewire drive. Installing Panther on my internal hard drive proved to not work and hard drive often made clicking noises. That too helped my decision not to repair the compy. Anyone ever have this problem but the drive turn out to be good?
So
700mhz
640 Ram
Combo
Airport Card
most likely dead 20GB
Thoughts Anyone?
Thanks
Mike

Sounds pretty much screwed to me. Probably worth more as parts... G3 ibooks aren't worth much working let alone with multiple dead bits.
My dead logic board happened in the 11th month after purchase. I have Applecare (bought it cheaper on ebay) so it didn't matter when it happened but I would have been lucky -(if you can call a dead ibook lucky) and got a warranty repair.
I've got both my Applecares on ebay - My ibook one was £110 ($187 at current rates - UK retail price £199) and my powermac one cost £50 ($85 - UK retail £199). Next time it might pay to see if you can pick up a cheaper warranty elsewhere - especially on portables

Sorry to hear about the computer... I am still looking for a new power supply, though, so if you decide to part it out, I can take that off your hands.

I'm very sorry to hear about that too. i have the exact same problem... ibook logic board failure literaly three days after the warranty has lapsed. so far apple canada has been less than understanding. after i called and said that it seemed like a poor business practice to allow a minor amount of time such as three days to inconvenience a customer in this way the junior customer service replied with "dude, er, sir, 3 days is 3 days" so after about 15 minutes of useless debate with him. i asked to speak with a manager (politely) as i said i didnt want to argue with him when clearly this issue would require a higher level of authority to resolve my problem. i was informed that i could not and that a manger would call me back. with a small amount of protest i accepted and then waited for a reply. getting through and getting calls retured is consistantly a process that takes several days and so far ive been left with out my laptop or any help other than suggesting that "i should have bought applecare" and "or you can just buy the part it is $730.00CAD plus taxes and labour" so despite all of this i am still dealing with them and i plan to be persistant until my issue is resolved. if it takes very much longer i will be logging a complaint with the consumer deplaints dept. of the federal governement as well as my local better business bureau. and from there i will continue to elevate my concerns with apple and with public and private institutions such as this board, newpaper editorials, and im actually speaking with cbc about detailing this on a show they air warning of consumer scams) and this is from what i can see a scam. it is very easy to find a multitude of complaints anywhere on the internet concerning this problem. it was documented in one article as "the rampant logic board problem in the ibook" my thoughts are that the ibook is one of apples best selling products and they should have a reponsibility to do a recall for a problem this common but considering the numbers of ibooks sold and the cost of the repair the prefer to just hide this problem and let their customers suffer becuase it would be damaging to the bottom line of this quarters earnings :( anyhow, i suggest that you too do what you can to get your problem resolved and i will lett you know if i have any success so that you might be able to do the same.

hey sad to hear about your story too. I can remember when it was working beautifully. Is the logic board design drastically different with the G4 iBooks? Maybe the problem ends with that revision.
Now I have two bad laptops, my first was a crappy compaq. 1st the ethernet port didnt work, and they said I wasn't under warranty because I didnt buy it personally. and i would have to take it to Florida to get repairs done under the warranty. then the headphone jack snapped off, breaking the interface in the case. I had to stick a screwdriver in there and get contact in places for sound to even come out of the speaker. Then the clicker broke in all but one of the pressure points so you have to hit it just the right way. Then to top it off, screen got cracked during a flight and battery will not charge or stay in its compartment.
I really like having a laptop, so maybe a powerbook will be next for me, or a used ibook and a new emac.
hmm
