Now ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/) is claiming the Gateway and Beverly Center stores will open next weekend - Nov. 19th. No word yet from Apple, but I'm passing on the rumor.

I've been wondering the same about Birmingham, AL. Although a recent map on Gary's site would suggest that Alabama isn't a good site for a store, Birmingham would be a notable exception, I think.
I'd love to know the story behind the original store #5, which was supposed to have been in Birmingham.

I haven't posted this list in a while, so perhaps it will help in looking for answers to the last few posts. Here is the list of the largest US metro areas and consolidated metro areas (according to the 2000 census and not counting Puerto Rico) without an Apple Store or one planned.
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia
New Orleans, Louisiana
Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Providence, Rhode Island
Louisville, Kentucky
Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
Dayton, Ohio
Fresno, California
Birmingham, Alabama
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Omaha, Nebraska
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Knoxville, Tennessee
El Paso, Texas
Bakersfield, California
Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Harrisburg/ Lebanon, Pennsylvania
Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
Toledo, Ohio
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Notice that Birmingham, Alabama; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Omaha, Nebraska are numbers 9, 10, & 11 on this list. Is it likely that one or more of them will get a store soon? I'd say yes. Are there other factors than population size that goes into Apple's decisions on store location? Undoubtedly, but here is a good place to start. It is worth noting that there are only two locations (Des Moines and Reno) with smaller populations than Baton Rouge that have a store or, in the case of Reno, one planned.

Yeah, after checking out the Des Moines store, it made me wonder even more why we don't have one here in Omaha. We have way more people, we have a couple of Universities that attract students, and we have two additional cities in very close proximity that could also be potential customers (Council Bluffs and Lincoln).

Apple has confirmed and expanded rumors of three new store openings next weekend, Nov. 19th. The openings are to be the much discussed Salt Lake City store in The Gateway Mall (http://www.apple.com/retail/thegateway/week/20051120.html) (the first in Utah,) and two new southern California locations - Sherman Oaks (http://www.apple.com/retail/shermanoaks/week/20051120.html) and The Beverly Center (http://www.apple.com/retail/beverlycenter/week/20051120.html) in the Los Angeles metro area.
It appears that Apple is gearing up to meet the holiday rush with these three openings; the question becomes can we expect more triple headers before the season is over?
edit: I should note that not only does this represent Utah's first store (the 31st state to have a store,) but it also marks California's 30th store with only the Irvine Spectrum store still known to be in the works. This is the 15th LA metro area store and the third in LA proper. Don't worry Los Angelenos I don't think Apple is stopping soon.
edit #2: In a curious development Apple has changed the date of the Beverly Center and Sherman Oaks store openings to "Coming Soon" (http://www.apple.com/retail/) from early today when both stores were listed as opening on Nov. 19th along with the Gateway Mall in Salt Lake City. Construction delays?

Well if we're going by population, Texas is second only to California and I think it only has like three Apple Stores, two near (but not actually in) Dallas and one in Houston. I'm from San Antonio, and I think an Apple store there would do pretty well, but I can understand why there wouldn't be one, as San Antonians just don't seem to be Mac folks (makes me sad). But Apple has offices in Austin for crying out loud, it seems logical to me to have at least one there. Of course that assertion has nothing to do with the fact that I'd be less than an hour from it if there was one :D
I think there is an Apple store in Austin, in the Barton Creek mall (sorry, can't remember the name off the top, but it's the mall on the southwest area of Austin, TX). Saw it there a few months ago.

Well I just got back from the Trafford Centre store opening. AMAZING DAY!
It was a lot of fun. My girlfriend and I got there at about 8.50am, thinking that the Apple Store frenzy that so often adorns the openings in the states wouldnt be the same in the UK. How wrong I was. By the time we got there the queue looped a third of the Trafford Centre. I was scared I might not get my free Apple t Shirt for being one of the first 1,000 in the store. luckily I got the t shirt. Makes a nice souvenir.
I have to say its a very immaculately designed store. There is a huge Mac presence in there which was excellent to see. Lots of mere iPod users were having fun on Photobooth and with Front Row. I came away with an Airport Express and .Mac. Got a little student discount so was cool. AirTunes rocks.
Heres some pics of the day. Mind the quality, as it was done on a camera phone.

This is the (huge) queue that we was in for the store opening. Bear in mind we were already queueing 30 minutes after the store opened at this point. The queue literally went about a third of the way of the Trafford Centre. You cant even see the store from this far back.

I was recently in Budapest and Sarajevo and there were Apple Centers in both cities. The displays and the signage were identical so I can't help but think that they were owned by the same company. The store in Budapest was about the size as the Apple Store in Santa Rosa and had about 10 macs on display while the one in Sarajevo was about half the size and only had 4 on display. I didn't speak to any of the staff as both places were busy while I was there.
Half the laptops I saw during my trip were a mix of iBooks and PBs. I was sort of surprised but it must mean that Apple is doing rather well in eastern and central Europe.

ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/) has a story saying there will be a new Apple store in Rome next year.
11-20-2005
Apple will open an official retail store in Rome (Italy), its first entré into Continental Europe, fulfilling a promise that Steve Jobs made during the Regent Street (London) grand opening press event in 2004. The store will open during 2006, possibly along Via Condotti or Via del Corso.

No, nevermind again, it took 3 days for it to go from apple's outgoing mail servers to their .mac, and then a matter of seconds for it to get forwarded to my gmail...
apple never posted an opening date (well, i never noticed one), and i'm kicking myself right now for not going to the openings.

Apple is now recruiting for its first continental and first Italian store. The Rome (http://www.apple.com/it/retail/jobs/) store had been reported as a rumor by ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/) just a few days ago, but is now confirmed by Apple's own site. This ends speculation over what continental European city would be the site of Apple's first venture, with most observers having thought Paris would lead the way.

Well, Texas is just to friggin' big! ;)
You do have two more stores scheduled for the Dallas-Ft.Worth area, but after that I'd have to bet on many other Texas locations before Waco. My guess for new locations would be second and third stores in San Antonio, Austin, and Houston, with a possible new store in El Paso before Waco even enters the list of possibilities. Even then it probably is way down the list. Sorry, but moving might be a better strategy. :o

Yes, sadly Waco just isn't that big. Well I don't know where I will end up after college. Perhaps Austin, but maybe even after state. Anyhow, I would really enjoy getting to go to one of the Apple stores and looking around and getting my hands on the macs!

Apple's "Search Jobs" (https://jobs.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Employment.woa/4/wo/2IpaNk4bO3zLa3aEY1jGXg/0.6.5.3.21) web page has three new locations listed. They are Perimeter Mall (http://www.perimetermall.com/html/mallinfo.asp) in Atlanta, GA; Flatiron Crossing (http://www.flatironcrossing.com/) in Broomfield, Colorado; and Simi Valley Town Center (http://www.simivalleytc.com/pressroom_releases.asp?rel=10) in Simi Valley, CA. These will be the third stores in both the Denver and Atlanta metro areas. The Simi Valley store will be the 17th store in the LA metro area.

Im wondering the Apple potential retail site team has the Saturation point in the states (like california) before the retail store sales starts to level off..
because sometime it will happen.. :o
the "pc" store that was there own store (gateway)
that store came out too quickly and hit saturation right away ..
I know some other states that need an apple store like Idaho ;) ..

Apple has a long way to go before they reach saturation in any US market, much less any international market. Even in LA, the market with the most stores currently, Apple has a lot of places it can go with placement of new stores. I wouldn't confuse saturation with Gateway's problem. Their problem wasn't that they had too many stores in a given market, but rather because they had too many stores that were not justified by their sales. Gateway took on too much in capital commitments without the sales to back them up. That's not yet Apple's problem. Far from it. The current Apple 10-K form shows profits from the stores at $151 million, up from $39 million last fiscal year.

Only Apple knows, but the markets they are trying to sell in are huge. The problem of smaller markets getting stores is interesting. The smallest market that Apple currently has a store in is the Des Moines metro area, with the upcoming Reno store set to open in 2006 the Nevada store will beat it for that distinction. With about 340,000 people in the Reno metro area, Apple has set a mark that shows it is willing to invest in smaller markets in order to sell its products. That bodes well for places like Boise with a metro area population of approximately 435,000. Of course, there are probably more tourists in Reno than Boise.

Here's the updated list of this year's stores and new locations. If, as is rumored, the two UK stores open next weekend or soon there after, we will have 136 stores worldwide (or 35 opened in 2005 - a new record.) We will have to wait to see if Apple has any other US openings planned this year for a final figure.

Garden State Plaza - Paramus, New Jersey
Derby Street - Hingham, Massachusetts

Flatiron - New York City, New York - opening in doubt due to design disputes. Rumor is this site has been canceled, but it is still listed as a location on Apple's "Search Jobs" web page as of 12/03/05.
Some, if not all of the above, from "Brent Cross" through "Irvine Spectrum Center," will undoubtedly be pushed over into 2006, but the following are assuredly openings for next year due to the late announcement of the locations.
2006 store openings
Southlake Center - Southlake, Texas
Suburban Square - Ardmore, Pennsylvania
Summit Sierra - Reno, Nevada (grand opening of mall on March 15, 2006)
Freehold Raceway - Freehold, New Jersey

Perimeter Mall - Atlanta, Georgia
Flatiron Crossing - Broomfield, Colorado
Simi Valley Town Center - Simi Valley, California
Ridgedale Mall - Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Mall in Columbia - Columbia, Maryland
Note: Apple's CFO Peter Oppenheimer said last October that the Company had plans to open "35 to 40 stores in fiscal 2006;" ten of those stores are now open. Of course, he also said we would have 25 new stores by the end of this year and we are looking at 10 stores over that figure as the likely real number. It has become clear that Oppenheimer likes to play with calendar year and fiscal year in the release of projections; changing which time frame he uses from speech to speech to further confuse the forecast. More of Apple's "playing it close to the vest" strategy.

I thought I'd post this list for discussion. It is of metropolitan areas, US and international, that have multiple stores or stores planned. It gives a better view of Apple's plans for certain markets. It should be noted I'm using 2000 statistics and metro area designations. The most important impact of the use of these figures is that Miami and West Palm Beach were then viewed as separate metro areas; they are no longer. If both areas are combined it gives a better view of Apple's obvious interest in Southeast Florida, with six stores located in the area. I've added the 2000 population ranking (not counting Puerto Rico) of each area at the end of it's listing. The international cities are obviously the largest metro areas in their respective nations.
US metro areas with multiple Apple stores
New York City (17) - SoHo, Staten Island, Roosevelt Field, Walt Whitman, Palisades, The Westchester, Bridgewater, Menlo Park, Rockaway, Short Hills, Tice’s Corner, Danbury Fair Mall, Garden State Plaza, Freehold Raceway (planned,) Midtown (planned,) Smith Haven Mall (planned,) Stamford Town Center (planned.) Population rank: 2
San Francisco (12) - San Francisco, Stonestown, Burlingame, Corte Madera, Bay Street, Palo Alto, Stanford Shopping Center, Stoneridge Mall, Oakridge, Valley Fair, Santa Rosa Plaza, Walnut Creek. Population rank: 5
Washington DC/Baltimore (9) - Annapolis, Bethesda Row, Montgomery Mall, Towson Town Center, Clarendon, Pentagon City, Tysons Corner, The Mall at Columbia, (planned,) Fair Oaks Mall (planned.) Population rank: 4

edit: high-profile stores are listed in red. The upcoming Midtown and, possibly, the Lincoln Road stores will be high-profile stores, but I've waited for their openings to list them as such. The Shinsaibashi store in Osaka is also a high-profile store, although the only store in the area.
note: Raleigh/Durham is the smallest metro area with two stores (excepting the special case of the already mentioned West Palm Beach/Boca Raton; ) the areas with only one store (or one planned) that are larger are the following: Cleveland, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Cincinnati, Sacramento, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Columbus, Charlotte, Salt Lake City, Austin, Nashville, Norfolk/Virginia Beach, and Providence. The larger metro areas of New Orleans, and Greensboro have no stores or one officially planned.
note#2: the New York total does not include the new location reported in post #1045. Apple has not yet listed this as a location.

The New York Post (http://www.nypost.com/business/58965.htm) is reporting a new Manhattan location for a third store on the island.
Apple Finds New Digs
December 18, 2005 -- Apple Computers has found itself a third Manhattan pod with a new lease opposite the Empire State Building at 21 W. 34th St.
The computer giant net-leased the entire, 30,000-foot five-story building from Jeff Sutton of Wharton Realty and his partner, SL Green Realty Trust, sources said.
Karen Bellantoni and Robert K. Futterman of his eponymous company are representing Apple, which is already open in SoHo and has installed a glass entry cube at the GM Building where it will soon open its doors.
The company also runs a store in the Staten Island Mall.
Apple previously ditched a deal in the Flatiron District.

Thanks for the report, Sayhey. I find it interesting that Chicago has relatively few stores compared to LA, New York, and SF. I also never realized how many stores Boston had. I wonder why Boston has 2 more stored than Chicago, which is quite larger?
p.s. Still no info on the Providence store. There are some empty spaces at the mall, but not signs up yet.

Sorry, 'gator, I've been away for a few days during the holidays and missed your post. Relative to Chicago, it's something I've wondered about as well. There are no stores to the south of the City or in the Indiana suburbs and, as someone with no real knowledge of the facts on the ground there, I can't understand why. I'm sure macrumors folks in the area could give us an idea of prospective areas that would be good for expansion. I have seen over at ifoAppleStore that there is a possibility of another downtown store (on States Street.)
In the very largest metro areas, the model seems to be fancy high-profile stores in the urban centers with many smaller stores clustered in the surrounding suburbs (e.g SF, NYC, LA, and Chicago.) I would think Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, and Dallas would follow this scheme soon, but cities like Detroit, which have similar populations, but major economic problems may not. The expansion has gone on in Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, and Dallas without a commitment yet to a high-profile urban store in these areas, but can they be far away? Chicago is just the reverse, with the North Michigan store built rather early on and fewer suburban store as of yet. With the rate of growth Apple is experiencing I think we will see all of these, and a Providence store, soon.

No problem. From what little I know about Chicago, I think the southern suburbs are generally not as affluent as the northern and western ones. Thats might explain why there aren't any Apple stores in the south suburbs yet.
I could deffinately see a high profile store going up in Boston, Washington, or Philadelphia since none of these cities has a store in their city limits yet. And I agree with you about the Providence store. Any day now. ;)

I've always understood Chicago's southside to be the less affluent area of the city, but I don't have a clue about the suburbs to the south. With the other four metro areas, Apple has six new stores planned, so I'm confident on their commitment to the areas, but still waiting on the high-profile stores. It maybe that the monies for such projects are tied up in New York (midtown and 34th street,) Rome (first continental store,) and Paris (said to be in the offing in 2007) upcoming stores. I know we keep saying Providence will be coming soon, but it is a matter now of when, not if. I guess that is some help in trying to be patient.
ethelred, Apple currently has five stores in the UK (Regent Street, Birmingham, Sheffield, Kent, and Manchester) and a new London location, Brent Cross, opening in early 2006 (rumored to open on the 28th of January.) Sorry, can't help on Panther.

Apple finishes the year with 135 stores or 34 new stores in 2005. More opened than in any previous year, but less than what looked likely at mid-year. Looking forward, Apple has stated that they will have 40 new stores by the end of fiscal year 2006 (Sept. 30, 2006.) That, of course, includes the 11 stores already opened since the close of the last fiscal year. So we are looking at a forecast of 24 to 29 new stores between now and the end of September. Here's what has opened and what we know is in the works.
Fiscal 2006 stores.
Staten Island Mall - Staten Island, New York - opened 10/15
The Oaks - Thousand Oaks, California - opened 10/29
Burlington Mall - Burlington, Massachusetts - opened 11/05
Brea Mall - Brea, California - opened 11/12
Gateway Mall - Salt Lake City, Utah - opened 11/19
Beverly Center - Los Angeles, California - opened 11/19
Fashion Square - Sherman Oaks, California - opened 11/19
Trafford Centre - Manchester, England - opened 11/19
Fukuoka Tenjin - Fukuoka, Japan - opened 12/03
Sendai Ichibancho - Sendai, Japan - opened 12/10
Meadowhall Centre - Sheffield, England - opened 12/10
Brent Cross - London, England - opened 1/28
Lincoln Road - Miami Beach, Florida
Crabtree Valley - Raleigh, North Carolina
Garden State Plaza - Paramus, New Jersey
Derby Street - Hingham, Massachusetts
Midtown - New York City, New York
Northpark Center - Dallas, Texas
Irvine Spectrum Center - Irvine, California
Southlake Center - Southlake, Texas
Suburban Square - Ardmore, Pennsylvania
Summit Sierra - Reno, Nevada (grand opening of mall on March 15, 2006)
Freehold Raceway - Freehold, New Jersey
The Pier - Atlantic City, New Jersey
Eaton Centre - Toronto, Canada
Rome, Italy
Perimeter Mall - Atlanta, Georgia
Flatiron Crossing - Broomfield, Colorado
Simi Valley Town Center - Simi Valley, California
Ridgedale Mall - Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Mall in Columbia - Columbia, Maryland
Providence Place Mall - Providence, Rhode Island
Memorial City Mall - Houston, Texas
Fair Oaks Mall - Fairfax, Virginia
Smith Haven Mall - Lake Grove, New York
Stamford Town Center - Stamford, Connecticut
MacArthur Center - Norfolk, Virginia
Flatiron - New York City, New York - opening is almost certainly canceled due to design disputes, but it is still listed as a location on Apple's "Search Jobs" web page as of 12/31/05.
The above, if all completed by September, would leave us 3 stores short of Apple's forecast. I'll keep posting new locations as they come up.

I'm not sure I understand your post. Did you read my post immediately before yours? Apple has finally confirmed through its own listing of retail locations that a new store is planned for Providence Place Mall. This means, if all goes as normal, that there will be a store opened in Providence within 6 to 9 months. While I don't recommend holding your breath for that period of time, the store is coming.
edit: btw, with Providence Place now confirmed, here is the revised list of the top twenty US metro areas without an Apple store or one planned.
Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia
New Orleans, Louisiana
Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Louisville, Kentucky
Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
Dayton, Ohio
Fresno, California
Birmingham, Alabama
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Omaha, Nebraska
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Knoxville, Tennessee
El Paso, Texas
Bakersfield, California
Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Harrisburg/ Lebanon, Pennsylvania

AppleStore Online has branches in most European countries as far as I'm aware and I've always used the UK store but they decided they'll no longer supply Jersey (it's thought to be because they've done a deal with TNT the delivery company who don't have a local depot).
As a result an iBook that would've cost me £719 in November will now cost me £899 and BTO will cost even more with much longer delivery times.

Apple eyes up islands as site for online store
by Phil Henderson
APPLE may open a Channel Islands-based Internet store.
Apple’s range of hardware includes such items as iPod portable music players and iMac computers. (Picture by Daniel Guerin, 0272881)
The computer giant has suspended online sales to the islands while it investigates doing so.
Acting PR manager Gia Goodman recently stated the company’s position on the matter.
‘In order to provide an optimum service quality to our customers, we are evaluating the need for a Channel Islands Apple online store. In the meantime, customers continue to be able to purchase Apple products from our network of local resellers.’
She said the company was aware of the potential tax advantages, but was unable to comment further or reveal in which island it might be based.
Some customers recently found difficulty purchasing its products on the Internet and were told it would not supply to Guernsey except through its resellers.
One customer contacted the Guernsey Press because to get a product here they had to order it via a UK address, pay VAT and have it forwarded to the island.
States departments in both Guernsey and Jersey said they were unaware of any move by Apple to set up an online store.
‘The department is not working with Apple and is not aware that it is taking this kind of approach,’ said Commerce and Employment director of resources Stuart Le Maitre.
Jersey Regulations and Undertakings director Wayne Gallichan said the only thing he knew was from in an article in the local paper.
Mr Gallichan said that if the company wanted to set up a business in Jersey, it would have to apply for a licence under its Regulation of Undertaking and Development Law.
Apple’s potential move comes after music giant HMV recently opened a postal order warehouse in the former Guernsey Post Office HQ, investing more than £1m. in the building and recruiting more than 30 local staff. Up to 100,000 CDs per week are understood to pass through the warehouse and later this year the company aims to open a major retail outlet in the island. The Guernsey Press and Star (http://www.thisisguernsey.com/code/shownewsarticle.pl?ArticleID=000046)

Apple will never open a store in the islands IMO, there just isn't the market for a OnlineStore, let alone bricks and mortar. The fact the the journalist went out seeking confirmation from the local business offices just shows how little he understands business in general.

I didn't mean to imply a brick and mortar store is likely in your location; I was only referring to the possibility of on-line access to Apple. I would think Apple would want universal access via the internet to their products. How much could it cost them to make this available to you folks? Not a lot.

katie, it usually takes from the time of posting individual job listings for the store anywhere from 6 to 9 months before the store opens. The fastest Apple has had a turn around from listings to opening is 3 months, but that is very uncommon. My guess is you're looking at a late summer opening, either August or September, but I'll be sure to post any further information I can find as it becomes available.

For those who don't read the latest tips from ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/), I pass along a couple of new juicy ones.
European Retail Store Initiative Confirmed
Chris Braithwaite, a director at British real estate company Cushman & Wakefield, has told “Retail Week” magazine that, “Apple wants to open in the 20 best retail locations in the (UK). It has told us just to get on and find the space.” He said some stores could be flagship stores similar in size to Regent Street. Braithwaite also confirmed an initiative to open retail stores in continental Europe cities in two phases over several years. He said the first phase includes stores in Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy. Braithwaite’s remarks confirm my previous information about future stores in Rome, Berlin, Frankfurt and Paris, and firm up speculation about stores in Switzerland. Phase II stores might include Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium and Scandanavia.
[Jan 15, 2006]

Second Las Vegas Store Planned
Amidst the continuing development of the Las Vegas Strip is a second Apple retail store. Property developer Turnberry Associates announced that Apple will be a tenant of the Town Square super-regional lifestyle center that will open in early 2007 at the far south end of the Strip. The development is intended to attract both locals and tourists with a combination of 150 shops, 12 restaurants, a multi-screen cinema, a 230-room luxury boutique hotel, office space, an outdoor concert venue and other features. The complex will be at the intersection of I-15 and I-215, and will include a new car rental facility for the city’s adjacent airport. The complex does not include a casino, but Turnberry still expects to draw heavily from Las Vegas residents and those who are just visiting. The current Apple store is about 5 miles north of this new site, inside the Fashion Show Mall.
[Jan 15, 2006]
The Apple story in Retail Week comes from Dec. 8th, but as it is for subscribers only, I'm too cheap to confirm the contents. I've no reason, however, to doubt Gary's (ifoAppleStore's version of Arn) veracity. It looks like a big year for Apple Retail in Europe.
The Nevada story, is indeed confirmed, by Turnberry Associates' own website (http://www.turnberry.com/tanews42.htm), and says this about its Town Square development,
Located on the famed Las Vegas Strip at the intersection of Interstate 15 and County Beltway 215, Town Square will span 120 acres in an open-air environment. It is approximately 80 percent committed and anchored by RAVE MotionPictures, Fry's Electronics, Borders Books, Old Navy, Strikes Bowl Multiplex and Robb & Stucky.
Additional shops include Design Within Reach, Banana Republic, Apple, Lucky Brand, Kenneth Cole, J. Crew, ... <snip> and many others.
This would be Apple's third store in Nevada and its second in Vegas.

I know there is another thread dealing with Jobs' Newsweek (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10853916/site/newsweek/) interview, but because of the one retail question and answer I thought it might also be discussed here.
You announced your first billion-dollar quarter for business in the Apple stores. Are you reaching a saturation point with stores?
We tend to build 30 to 40 stores a year. We know we can control the quality that way, both in terms of the real estate selection and in terms of the build-outs. We have many years to go at that rate.
The "we have many years to go..." answer should be of interest to all those cities and states without stores to date. The "30 to 40" figure is also one from the last year, as Apple has never built stores at that rate before. It is further confirmation of the retail expansion picking up steam.

Apple has begun listing two new store locations on its "Search Jobs (https://jobs.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Employment.woa/24/wo/HTk9pS4Ldtm1jAhvIFmXbM/0.6.5.3.21)" webpage. The are to open in the Fair Oaks Mall (http://www.shopfairoaksmall.com/) in Fairfax, Virginia and the Smith Haven Mall (http://www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?ID=103) in Lake Grove, New York (on Long Island.) These will be the 9th store in the DC metro area and the 16th in the NYC metro area, as well as the 5th in the state of Virginia and the 12th in New York state.

In a small, but important, revision of the previously reported story about Apple's plan to open five new stores in Germany, it appears that only one store will open there this year.
Apple to take bite out of Germany
By : Tony Glover - Technology Editor January 22, 2006
US electronics giant Apple is planning to extend its retail operations into Germany, with stores planned for Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich.
Last year, Apple generated more than $1bn (£570m, E830m) in sales over the Christmas quarter from its high-street stores, such as the flagship outlet in London’s Regent Street. But the retail chain still has notable gaps. The company’s distinctive shops have been a feature of the US retail scene for some years, but have only just started to be opened in Europe.
Apple has stores in London, Birmingham, the Bluewater shopping centre in Kent, Sheffield and with another store planned for Manchester. The company is also reported to be planning to open a store in Rome later this year.
But the kind of rollout that Apple is reported to be planning in Germany represents a more aggressive European strategy. In an interview with German newspaper, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Archibald Horlitz, head of the German computer retailer Gravis, revealed that it is “99.9% certain” that Apple was planning to open four to five stores in Germany, with the first scheduled for later this year. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by The Business at the weekend. The Business Online (http://thebusinessonline.com/Stories.aspx?Apple%20to%20take%20bite%20out%20of%20Germany&StoryID=E3246495-1FC4-4828-B6A7-14610745F763&SectionID=F3B76EF0-7991-4389-B72E-D07EB5AA1CEE) emphasis added

Apple's "Search Jobs (https://jobs.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Employment.woa/8/wo/6DDoFDHueC0dOrCsjfNkSM/0.6.5.3.21)" webpage has two new listings for Apple store locations. One of the locations is the first in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area (the largest US area to date without a store) and along with the previously disclosed Fairfax location (see post #1080) will bring the total in Virginia to six. The second new retail store will add to the growing number in the New York City metro area, bringing that total to 17, and will be located across the state lines in Stamford, Connecticut - making it the third store in that state. The Stamford store will likely be located in the Stamford Town Center (http://www.shopstamfordtowncenter.com/) mall and the Norfolk store is to be in the MacArthur Center (http://www.shopmacarthur.com/).

Here's the new list of US metro areas without an Apple store or one planned. Unfortunately, New Orleans has now made it to the top of the list, and given the state of the city following hurricane Katrina it is likely to stay there for a good while. I hope I'm wrong.
New Orleans, Louisiana
Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Louisville, Kentucky
Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
Dayton, Ohio
Fresno, California
Birmingham, Alabama
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Omaha, Nebraska
Albuquerque, New Mexico
El Paso, Texas
Bakersfield, California
Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Harrisburg/ Lebanon, Pennsylvania
Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
Toledo, Ohio
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Youngstown/Warren, Ohio
Springfield, Massachusetts
Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida

I really wish they would put one in Dayton. I live and operate out of here and driving 1 or 2 hours to the nearest ones is a pain.
Not to mention that I'd apply for a job there in a heartbeat!

I was finally able to stop by the Salt Lake City store today as I'm in town for the weekend. I was pleased to see the place packed on a Friday night, I was able to check out the new Intel iMacs and grab a copy of iLife '06. I really liked the Store, great location and only six hours away versus the next closest at eight hours. ;)

Alright, enough rubbing salt in the wounds of my brethren. The good news, aside from a great new store in SLC, is that Apple has plans for a store in Reno. How's that good news for you, evilgEEk? It is the smallest market yet targeted for a store. Even smaller than Boise. So there is hope you can cut down on that commute.
Here's the latest list of fiscal 2006 stores.
Staten Island Mall - Staten Island, New York - opened 10/15
The Oaks - Thousand Oaks, California - opened 10/29
Burlington Mall - Burlington, Massachusetts - opened 11/05
Brea Mall - Brea, California - opened 11/12
Gateway Mall - Salt Lake City, Utah - opened 11/19
Beverly Center - Los Angeles, California - opened 11/19
Fashion Square - Sherman Oaks, California - opened 11/19
Trafford Centre - Manchester, England - opened 11/19
Fukuoka Tenjin - Fukuoka, Japan - opened 12/03
Sendai Ichibancho - Sendai, Japan - opened 12/10
Meadowhall Centre - Sheffield, England - opened 12/10
Brent Cross - London, England - opened 1/28
Garden State Plaza - Paramus, New Jersey - opened 2/04
Irvine Spectrum Center - Irvine, California - opening 2/11
Lincoln Road - Miami Beach, Florida
Crabtree Valley - Raleigh, North Carolina
Derby Street - Hingham, Massachusetts
Midtown - New York City, New York
Northpark Center - Dallas, Texas
Southlake Center - Southlake, Texas
Suburban Square - Ardmore, Pennsylvania
Summit Sierra - Reno, Nevada (grand opening of mall on March 15, 2006)
Freehold Raceway - Freehold, New Jersey
The Pier - Atlantic City, New Jersey
Eaton Centre - Toronto, Canada
Rome, Italy
Perimeter Mall - Atlanta, Georgia
Flatiron Crossing - Broomfield, Colorado
Simi Valley Town Center - Simi Valley, California
Ridgedale Mall - Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Mall in Columbia - Columbia, Maryland
Providence Place Mall - Providence, Rhode Island
Memorial City Mall - Houston, Texas
Fair Oaks Mall - Fairfax, Virginia
Smith Haven Mall - Lake Grove, New York
Stamford Town Center - Stamford, Connecticut
MacArthur Center - Norfolk, Virginia
West Town Mall - Knoxville, Tennessee
Le Carrefour Laval - Montreal, Canada
West Quay Mall - Southampton, England
Flatiron - New York City, New York - opening is almost certainly canceled due to design disputes, but it is still listed as a location on Apple's "Search Jobs" web page as of 12/31/05.
This would now give us the right number of locations to fulfill Apple's forecast of 40 stores by September 30th. It is likely that some more locations will be posted shortly and we will have a pool greater than 40 to watch and see which Apple is planning to open first. I should also say that all the stores listed above, with the exception of the Montreal and Southampton stores are already listing individual job openings for each store. That is the start of the clock for an opening that usually occurs 6-9 months later.

Went to the opening of the Brent Cross store in London, today. No special offers at all, just the usual free t-shirt and too many whoops and high-fives accompanied by deafening music. The layout is the same as the Birmingham store - long and narrow. Most of the queue seemed to form after the store opened, surprisingly enough.

Yeah, thanks for that. I have an open wound and a salt shaker...go to town! ;)
I have faith that Apple will come to Boise in the near future, if no other reason than the fact that there aren't many more places to go before they hit Boise. ;) I figure 2-3 years we'll have one....hopefully ;)

While i've got no hard news on a Alabama store, there is this interesting rumor over at ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/).
Birmingham? Oh, Please!
The mysterious retail store plan for The Summit mall in Birmingham (Ala.) may be warming up after Apple re-approached mall management with an updated lease application. You’ll recall that the project was officially created as Project #005 back in 2001, but the mall was reportedly reluctant to allow a mere computer store into the upscale mall. Now that’s all changed, sources say, perhaps after Apple negotiated a lease a Summit Sierra in Reno (Nev.), which is operated by the same company, Bayer Properties.
[Jan 28, 2006]
There is also a report about a possible opening in Sapporo, Japan (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/01/28/apple-store-slated-for-olympic-games-city/), but I thought you might be more interested in the "bama" possibilities. ;)

Sorry, Roller, no new news on Alabama. What I do have is a new location on Apple's "Search Jobs" web page for "Southampton - West Quay." Which I take to mean this mall (http://www.west-quay.co.uk/website/). This is the 7th location in the UK and the first on the south coast. It also gives us the number of locations to meet Apple's forecast of 40 by September 30th. Not that I think we necessarily have the right 40. Some of these will likely be pushed into fiscal 2007 and some other locations are likely to be posted soon that may open before September. I'll just keep posting them as they come up so we know what pool of sites to watch.
I should also say that all of the stores listed above, with the exception of this one and yesterday's announced Montreal store have individual job listings out. That starts the clock on what usually takes 6 to 9 months for an opening.

No opening date. In fact Apple has now removed the listing, after MacWorldUK (http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?home&NewsID=13750) and ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/02/02/next-uk-apple-store-in-port-city/) both did stories on the news. It's not the first time they have done this, and follows Apple's mania about secrecy. The listing isn't crucial to Apple's plans for a store at this time because there are no individual job openings to connect to it as of yet. I'll keep looking for the West Quay's reappearance and when the job openings are listed. When the latter take place it is usual for the store to open within 6 - 9 months. It takes that time not only for construction, but also to hire and train personnel.

ETA - Carrefour Laval for Montreal? I'm rather disappointed it's not anywhere near downtown. Laval's actually a separate island on the St. Lawrence (adjacent to the island of Montreal) and even growing up I've barely gone there. Think Secret (http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0602gm.html) is reporting the upcoming Midtown store, complete with its glass cube top, will also be the first to feature around the clock service.
Apple's upcoming midtown Manhattan retail store will mark a first for the company as sources report the location will be open 24 hours a day. The store, located in the underground retail plaza of the General Motors Building on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th Street will also be among the first stores to offer customers an iPod Bar.
The 25,000-square-foot store will dwarf Apple's SoHo location and will be capped by a 32-foot glass cube that will stand in front of the building and house the stairs and elevators that will take customers underground to the Apple retail store.
Sources report that construction of the store is on track to be completed in April, with the store expected to open by the end of May.
Also in the news is the confirmation (by way of the Daily Camera (http://www.dailycamera.com/bdc/crossroads/article/0,1713,BDC_16576_4449946,00.html) and ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/02/08/two-new-colorado-stores-confirmed/)) from mall management company, Macerich, that there will be a store in the still under construction 29th street mall in Boulder, Colorado. The following are upcoming stores confirmed by mall websites, public documents, and press reports. No word from Apple on any of these or a word on possible opening dates as of yet. Unless they get derailed by planning difficulties, they appear to be locations of future stores; all also are very unlikely for FY 2006 openings.

Not that I'd expect Apple to confirm anything until tomorrow at the earliest. ifoAppleStore seems very confident of the opening date, and this is not something I'd doubt except an overabundance of caution often is needed in all things Apple.
Personally I think it will open. The place looks pretty much done.. If it does open, I won't be able to attend, going up to NH to adopt our puppy :)

I wish they would make more stores in Western NY. The only one close to me is the Buffalo one and that's an hour and thirty minutes away. :(
Your best bet to cut down on your commute would obviously be not in western NY, but in Erie, Pennsylvania. The good news it that Apple is putting in a store in a city not too much larger than than Erie (metro pop. 280,000) with the upcoming store in Reno, Nevada (metro pop. 340,000.) The bad news is that there are 78 metro areas larger than Erie that currently don't have an Apple store or one planned. Unless there is a huge super-regional mall in your area or a tourist attraction I'm not aware of, the odds aren't good.

Thanks! :) We are adopting her from the local rescue league (they are affiliated with a NH pet Smart so we have to drive up there to get her).
I will be sure to get to the Derby street store asap (my wife loves it there because of all the home decor shops so it will be easy to convince her).

This list is an updated one of metropolitan areas, US and international, that have multiple stores or stores planned. It gives a better view of Apple's plans for certain markets. It should be noted I'm using 2000 Census Bureau statistics (table 3) (http://www.census.gov/population/www/cen2000/phc-t3.html) and metro area designations. The most important impact of the use of these figures is that Miami and West Palm Beach were then viewed as separate metro areas; they are no longer. If both areas are combined it gives a better view of Apple's obvious interest in Southeast Florida with six stores located in the area, so this is the one adjustment I've made to the table. I've added the 2000 population ranking (excluding Puerto Rico) of each U.S. area at the end of it's listing (the combining of Miami and West Palm Beach makes this the 10th largest metro area in the US.) I've also listed high-profile stores in red and stores that are confirmed by non-Apple sources in green. All other entries are from Apple's own site (existing stores (http://www.apple.com/retail/) and planned locations (https://jobs.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Employment.woa/1/wo/2bbhODKe6P9uLbLjyp5LM0/0.6.5.3.21).)

Manchester (2) - Trafford Centre, Arndale Centre (planned.)
note: Raleigh/Durham is the smallest metro area with two stores (excepting the special case of the already mentioned West Palm Beach/Boca Raton.) The areas with only one store (or one planned) that are larger are the following: Cleveland, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Cincinnati, Sacramento, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, San Antonio, Columbus, Charlotte, Salt Lake City, Austin, Nashville, Norfolk/Virginia Beach, and Providence. So these cities are very likely candidates for second stores in the near future. There are a few metro areas larger than Raleigh/Durham (specifically New Orleans and Greensboro) that have no stores or one officially planned. Of these two, given the level of destruction from hurricane Katrina, Greensboro seems more likely to see a store any time soon.

815 Bolyston Street - Boston, Massachusetts
The Boston high-profile store will sure be awesome when it opens, its too bad wdlove isn't here to share the excitement (although he's probably already heard about it).
By the way, there is space that closed on the bottom level of the Prov place mall that is covered in white plywood, which I am assuming will be the new apple store. I'm just waiting for them to put the apple logo and "coming soon" sign up.

Great, I'll be looking forward to it. btw, I sent a pm to wdlove first thing I heard of the Boston store, so he has heard of it. I see he's posting once in a while - just not at the same rate he used to. ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/02/13/second-milwaukee-region-store-revealed/) is reporting a second Apple store in the offing for the Milwaukee area. No confirmation from Apple as of yet.
February 13, 2006
For a awhile it looked like that the 1954-vintage Bayshore Mall (Glendale, WI) would decay and die, hemmed in by I-43, a cemetery, roads and homes that prevented an expansion. But since the mall is the city’s biggest taxpayer, city officials declared eminent domain on an entire city block and paid residents and businesses $18 million to move out. Now a $200 million reconstruction is underway that will create a 400,000 s.f. Main Street-type mall, plus townhouses and condos, restaurants, offices, a theater and lots more. According to lease records, Apple will be among the tenants when the mall opens in time for this year’s holiday shopping season. The mall is about 8 miles north of Milwaukee, and also about 8 miles from the existing Mayfair in Wauwatosa, a western Milwaukee suburb.

If I can work up the desire to drive an hour for a possible free T-shirt, I'll be there (Derby St).
That assumes I'll be able to leave the house by ~8:30AM (otherwise, I don't think I'll get the shirt).
That's quite the assumption.
So... there's a ~33% chance I'll be there. My Burlington, MA shirt needs a companion, I suppose.

Hey all I haven't checked out this thread much in the past few months... I mean we have the Yorkdale shop so I should be happy eh? While I was shopping with my fiancée at the Eaton Centre Sunday, I paused at a very large iPod ad walling off a store renovation (and had a peek in) :D From previous posts Sayhey has confirmed the new location is in the Eaton's centre, I can confirm it's location. (sadly it looks pretty far from done)
...
:( Eaton's centre map is not working!
...
Well then lets see, it's at the south end on the third level... if you enter through the Queen St. doors at street level, take the escalators up to the 3rd level and it's there on your left! :)
Now that I've moved my condo is about a 20 minute walk away... I can't wait till it opens!

I'll surely be stopping in to the Eaton's centre from time to time and can take a peek in when I'm there. :) I think the opening is a fair bit off though, the place just looks gutted right now with bare walls, loose wiring, and rough floors. I did hear about the Montreal store and I'm glad they are expanding elsewhere in Canada, but they should spread out as much as they can. Both coasts would probably be able to support a successful store, Vancouver is the obvious choice for the West, but maybe Halifax for the east?
...this is probably been discussed on the forums before though... maybe I should get caught up on my reading!

Podcaster Shawn King announced on tonights’s broadcast of Your Mac Life (http://www.yourmaclife.com/) that an unnamed Apple employee confirmed to him the company will open a retail store in Calgary (Canada), at the Chinook Centre (http://www.chinookcentre.com/) mall. King remarked that Apple is notoriously secreet about the stores, and that the employee consulted others within the company before confirming the information. He noted that Vancouver was the next logical choice for a store, since it’s among the nation’s three largest cities, but chose Calgary instead, with almost 1 million residents and 5 million annual tourists.

I know. Gary has had the Tulsa rumor posted for over a year, but at this point there is no reason to believe there is any movement on the location's development. Following up on the post above, of interest to me was this story in the Jordan Times (http://www.jordantimes.com/fri/weekend/weekend6.htm) about the new Apple Center in Amman. It appears that Apple is trying to make a comeback in the middle east.
Apple is back. It has certainly taken quite some time for the Middle East to feel the seemingly unstoppable energy of Apple's global resurgence. But now, driven by demand for the iPod, as well as its computers, the Apple brand is ready to make an impact in the region.
Combine that with Jordan's ever expanding retail revolution and it becomes clear why, on Sunday, Amman will witness the opening of its first major Apple Centre on Wakalat Street in the Sweifieh shopping district.
Designed to resemble the famed Apple Stores that Apple directly runs in the US, Canada, Japan and the UK, the opening of the centre, called iSystem, will signal the return of Apple's brand in a strong manner to the Jordanian market. A retail area of 280 square meters will make iSystem the largest Apple-dedicated store in the Middle East, the owners claim.
Apple computers have nearly disappeared from Jordan's public consciousness in the past 15 years. In the late 80s and early 90s the Apple logo stood proudly on Commodore Street in Shmeisani, as Jordanian IT pioneers like Karim Kawar (now Jordan's ambassador in Washington) and Basil Tutunji, were energetically selling Apple's hardware to companies and individuals who were getting introduced to the desktop publishing revolution of that time.
But Apple's expensive prices and the onslaught of cheaper PC alternatives gradually wiped out Apple presence in the local market. Today most people think that only graphic designers use Apple.
"We want to change the perception about Apple's products. They are not just for designers. The iPod is part of today's teenagers' digital lifestyle and the retail business is the future," says Marwan Ziadat, Jordan's country manager of Grapheast whose company is partnering up with Modern System, an authorised Apple reseller, to launch the iSystem Apple Centre....

I would like to ask for help from anyone in the Miami Beach area who can answer a question.
(1) Does anyone have any information on the progress of the upcoming store in Miami Beach at 734-744 Lincoln Road? This location (at the former Moseley's Linen store) has been in the works since August of 2004, but still no word on an opening. I know there were legal problems (unrelated to Apple) that postponed any work on the store, but Apple is still looking for employees to work at the location. Anyone in the area who could go by and take a look? Thanks in advance for any help.

MacworldUK (http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?RSS&NewsID=14019) is reporting on an interview with Apple UK managing director Mark Rogers in The Scotsman (http://business.scotsman.com/technology.cfm?id=332462006) in which there is speculation of 20 stores in the UK.
The report speculates that Apple may open its own retail stores in Edinburgh and Glasgow, "once Apple can secure prime retail locations". Rogers declined to comment on this.
Chris Braithwaite, a director at real estate company Cushman and Wakefield told 'The Scotsman': "Apple wants to open in the 20 best retail locations in the UK. It has told us just to get on and find the space."
This report is also being carried on AppleInsider's (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1573) website, and they add to the story with their own sources saying. The report speculates that Glasgow and Edinburgh may be two cities in which Apple hopes to make inroads -- a move that would pit Apple-owned stores in head-on competition with Scotsys's own independent retail stores in those regions.
Independent of the report, AppleInsider can confirm the Mac maker has had aspirations of a Glasgow-based retail store for over a year now. Initially, company plans called for the Glasgow store to take on the company's mini store footprint, but questionable performance of the scaled-down retail format has reportedly caused Apple to rethink such plans.

The Switzerland-based Web site MacPrime (http://www.macprime.ch/article.php?story=20060308_apple_store_switzerland) reports Apple will open a retail store in Zurich in by 2007, in the space now occupied by the United Colors of Benetton store at Bahnhofstrasse 77. The contract has been signed on the 2,960 square-foot store for a reported $762,000 a year. The Web site first reported this space as a possibility in August 2005.

Apple's proposal to raze site worries Back Bay panel
By Chris Reidy, Globe Staff | March 9, 2006
Preliminary design proposals for Apple Computer's first Boston store got a cool reception last night from the Back Bay Architectural Commission, but several commissioners said a revised design might address their concerns.
Apple hopes to demolish a small building at 815 Boylston St., which is occupied by a Copy Cop store at street level, and build a flagship store across from the Prudential Center.
Projects involving the demolition of an existing building in the Back Bay Architectural District generally require the commission's approval.
Apple has not formally presented any designs yet to the city.
Last night's meeting was an opportunity for Apple to rough out some early design ideas and get commission feedback.
One concept presented was a three-story building whose front would be largely glass. The building would likely have a green roof, said Bob Bridger, an Apple vice president of retail development.
Donna Prince, an alternate on the commission, acknowledged that the design was ''beautiful," but that it ''doesn't have a sense of place."
Ali Rizvi, the commission's vice chairman, said a developer needs to demonstrate an ''overwhelming justification" to be granted permission to tear down a building in the district. Stephen V. Miller of McDermott, Quilty & Miller LLP, a Boston firm representing Apple, said the flagship store would be a ''nonstarter" if the existing building can't be demolished....

via Spymac (http://www.spymac.com/news/article.php?contentid=4297) comes the news of the opening next Wednesday, March 15th at 10:00 am of the new Summit Sierra store in Reno, Nevada. This is Nevada's second store and the first in Reno.
edit: with two days to go Apple has finally posted the official confirmation of the Summit Sierra (http://www.apple.com/retail/summitsierra/week/20060312.html) opening.

Another request for help. Apple has finally updated its "Search Jobs (https://jobs.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Employment.woa/11/wo/3zflSFGrLlToZqMww5SA4g/0.6.5.3.21)" webpage to reflect its recruitment page for the new Rome store (http://www.apple.com/it/retail/jobs/en/). Trouble is the new listing is "Rome - Rome est" and east Rome is just too vague for an exact location. Any ideas?
edit: Ok, I sent the same request over to Gary at ifoAppleStore and along with his thanks for the tip he knew what the designation meant.

Speculation over Apple’s retail plans in Rome (Italy) has ended with news they will open a store at the Romaest mall under construction on the city’s eastern suburbs. A grand opening could be held as early as September, according to one source. The location avoids the traffic and congestion of the city’s central shopping district, and provides space that the newish, west-side Parco Leonardo mall could not offer. The news also ends anticipation of a spectacular flagship store for the city, leaving only the possibility of a standard, mall-type store. In real news, of very small importance unless you live in Omaha, Apple has started listing individual job listings for the upcoming Omaha store. This would put it on the timetable to be opened by the end of September.

Raleigh/Durham (2) - Southpoint, Crabtree Valley (planned.) Population rank: 40
note: Raleigh/Durham is the smallest metro area with two stores (excepting the special case of the already mentioned West Palm Beach/Boca Raton.)

Raleigh and Durham are quite distinct locations.

We can't forget NC State, Chapel Hill (UNC) and Duke all right there close by. Sure that is one of the main reasons why they have two stores while Charlotte still only has one. Additionally, RTP (Research Triangle Park) is in that area. Major tech. center. Sure wish we could get one in the the triad...Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point.

We are in dire need of one in Fresno! The nearest store is over 150 miles away, we have a metro population of 1 million +, and there are three universities in the area, including the new University of California Merced, and Fresno State University (student pop. 22,000). Its a mystery to me how such locations as Reno, Nevada and Omaha, Nebraska could get Apple stores before the Fresno market.

It's a mystery to everyone, except Apple. ;)
Just keep in mind that they don't make their decisions based solely upon population, there are many other factors involved.

Both the places you mention have large regions they draw from and the Reno market has a large tourist base as well. Add to that both locations are stores in malls that Apple has a relationship with and I think you get a picture of why. Does need to make much sense to us, but I'm sure Apple has many factors, as evilgEEk mentions, in their decision making process. None of which negates the points you make. Fresno needs a store and likely will get one soon.

See, all you have to do is ask. Apple is recruiting (http://jobsearch.monster.ca/jobsearch.asp?cy=CA&q=Apple+Computer&sort=rv&vw=b&x=0&y=0) personnel for a store in the Le Carrefour Laval mall in Montreal. It should open in the late summer to September.

Very minor update on the Eaton's Centre Store, last week they had finished the walls and it looked like they were working on the floor. When I went by tonight they had duct tape covering the crack in the door. At any rate it looks like the Yorkdale Mall has done a bunch of hiring since Christmas and they're probably keeping them over staffed to shift employees to the new store downtown. Still don't know when it will open, but I'd bet it's a few months away.

The store in Eatons Center in Toronto is opening next weekend May 6th.
I`ll be there since the store at yorkdale doesn`t have the iMac with the upgraded video card and they are clueless there when if they `ll even get it.
Hoping that the one in eatons center will have them since I got the store credit for my MBP today.

While I wasn't sure about the date, I had a peek into the store front and it does look almost ready. The 6th seems early... but not out of the realm of possibility, there's a sign saying the store next to it is opening in early May... I don't know if this would apply to the Apple store as well. Is there some offical announcement out?

Well I'll probably find out anyway... :D
I find it funny that my place was less than 10 minutes drive away from Yorkdale, then I move downtown, now I'm a 20 minute walk away from this one. I think apple is stalking me... or at least trying to ensure their profit levels.

Bakey is right. It is typically 6 to 9 months from the posting of job listings to opening of the doors. However, in a few cases it has been much longer. The Lincoln Road store in Miami Beach is coming up on two years since its first posting of job listings (a new record,) but that is due to legal problems that stalled the transfer to Apple. Hope all works out smoothly in Birmingham.
btw, one of the reasons for the interval between posts is that much of the 2006 openings discussion has taken place in this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=189315&page=8).

There's an Apple Store going up in Cherry Hill Mall, in Cherry Hill, NJ. Don't know if this has been reported yet, but this will be the 9th in Jersey, tieing Jersey with Florida and Texas, trailing only California and New York.
This is actually going to be the closest store to downtown Philadelphia, about 15 minutes away. Still downtown Philly (Center City) is conspicuously absent from the list of Apple stores. Is this Apple's way of thanking Springboard Media and Bundy Computer, two long-time (and very good) Apple specialty stores? Or is Apple trying to get the National Park Service to put the Liberty Bell in an Apple store? Just think of the fabulous lighting job Apple could do. Something about the Apple with the bite out of it and the Bell with the crack in it juxstapose nicely against eachother

I posted this in May (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2399293&postcount=123), but it's worthy of a new discussion. I've been talking up the need for high-profile stores in Philadelphia and Washington for some time now and while I'm glad to see more stores go into the Philly metro area (you also have a new one going into Atlantic City) it doesn't quite make the same statement that the new Bolyston store in Boston does. Something big and splashy in downtown Philly has GOT to be in order soon!

It's really difficult to put one in Center City Philadelphia.
The Gallery (mall) isn't upscale enough, even though with the Federated buyout of May Dept. Stores, there will likely be a Macy's there. There is a Lord & Taylor where the John Wanamaker store was. There also is Liberty Place, which has a number of small stores and fast food places. Chestnut Street at Rittenhouse Square is very upscale but hardly has room and the neighbourhood would probably object to a big black box being plunked down there. There was a store dealing in Apple equipment in that area. They need foot traffic with the money to lead to potential (or real) sales.
They could change tactics and open a store in or next to Chinatown. It would be near The Gallery, Reading Terminal Market, The Pennsylvania Convention Center, and the historical sites. However, it would be more of a risk.

Turns out I've ended up in Center City Philly for a year - so I can vouch that a downtown Apple store would be very appreciated, especially since I don't have a car. I'm disappointed they didn't end up taking the spot where Borders used to be on Walnut, it's an upscale shopping area in Rittenhouse Square and would have been pretty ideal. :( Oh well.
That said, Springboard media did seem fairly decent - I'm just spoiled by two years of the Shadyside store in Pittsburgh.

Yes, there's a new Macy's opening next month - I believe it's replacing the Lord and Taylor.
I can't imagine Apple even considering touching the Convention Center/Chinatown area. The Gallery serves its purpose, but isn't anything to look at...nor is the immediate vicinity of Market Street. Liberty Place is more upscale and I could imagine an Apple store fitting in, but I'm not sure it'd get enough foot traffic to be profitable. Walnut was really the best bet, but it'll be hard to get an opening now unfortunately.

The Apple Store for providence place mall is not opening any time soon!
I saw the location listed on the mall directory sign. I went to location, peered through the construction barriers and saw the frame-work. It appears like the construction has just begun. It was all exposed wires, beams, etc.
I'll keep checking it out - hopefully they can work magic and open by the fall.
