Was Apple afraid their symbol was too gay?

For many years, Apple Computer had a rainbow-colored Apple symbol. I noticed that it seemed to vanish just around the time that the 'rainbow colors' started to be used by gay-rights groups.

Apple replaced their logo with an all-white apple symbol.

What gives?
