View Full Version : Does *anyone* hate their Mac?

You always here PC users grumbling about their computers eg "Computers! Can't live with them can't live without them." or "I'm sure we were better off before computers" or "#$*!@ computers!"
I don't seem to hear Mac users talking like that. Is that true? Do Mac users for the most part enjoy using them?
Does any Mac user actually hate it? and use it grudgingly?
I'm really starting to see what I was missing for the last 20 years!

the only mac people you would have ever heard that from would be the few unlucky powerbook 5300 series owners that had cracked cases and the 1 or 2 that had them actually catch on fire as there was some connection/over heating issue with the hard disks as I understand it.
imagine leaving the room for a snack or drink and coming back to find your powerbook on fire! ah! :)

I've always loved all my Macs. I suppose I did have a bit of contempt for my old Performa, but as any Performa owner can attest to, who didn't? Printing was a nightmare with that machine. It would always freeze, no matter what. I would just put my file on a disk and print it at school or something. Also, I remember one night after typing a six page paper it freezing on me (something it did quite often). Of course, I hadn't saved it, and proceded to violently attack the computer. I guess it was my fault though. I was stuck with that machine for five years. As much suffering as it did give me, it was my first computer, my first Mac, and I loved it.

I had a performa 6400/180 before my blue and white. printed fine. never any problems at all really. it was stolen from me :( my aunt felt so bad for me that she helped me buy my new one. this was summer 99 so I got the 350MHz Blue G3 Rev. 2 and am still using it. this is by far the best computer I have owned. so reliable that it has been on 24/7 since summer 99 and only ever shut down to put in the upgraded components listed in my sig. never had one problem with it that wasn't my fault.

I've only ever hated my Mac every time it totaly crashed and forced me to re-install OS + software. Oh wait, that was my pc :p
Haven't (yet) found any good reasons to hate it. The only things that bothers me is the relatively regular kernal panics on my Rev D iMac (it may be bad memory?). But who could hate a cute lil' iMac?

I hated my Wallstreet PowerBook G3/233. It was absolutely no faster than my Mac clone with 225 MHz 604e. The passive display, bad graphics hardware, and lack of L2 cache meant that it couldn't do much in the way of graphics processing.
I've obviously gotten over it and have bought two desktop machines from Apple since then.

Hi,
I started out with Apple in the 80's, went to Windows when I HAD to. Now I'm back to mac's and just chuckle everytime I start it up. It's just marvelous. With Windows I never knew "who" I was going to find that day. My Mac is like an old friend. Faithful, consistant, and loads of fun. I still use Windows for work, and must admit that XP is tons better than anything before, but it's nowhere in the Mac League!!!

I hated that little piece of junk and thought I would never own another laptop again. Fortunately, I tried my luck with an iBook and found that I love modern Mac laptops. Amazingly, I miss my 5300cs terribly. I've been looking into getting one on eBay just for nostalgia.

I dislike using my parent's iMac. I've grown accustomed to resolutions higher than 1024x768, and decent speed. That said, I don't hate it, it currently holds second place in uptime, after my brother's Gentoo box. Maybe I do this (http://www.applefritter.com/hacks/illuminatedmac/index.html) when they get a new computer in 4 or 5 years.

I guess its because I'm forced to like products that I shell out huge amounts of cash for...
Well honestly, my mac feels new everytime I look and start it up.
When I have a new PC, after a week, it feels like the system is the same old routine and I get used to it. When I look at my mac, it feels like the very first day I pulled it out of my box.
PC's some how have a feeling that they get slower and slower as I use them, with my mac, I don't get that feeling at all!
I am frustrated at times by some incompatibilities, but the age has gone where they were huge, this incompatibilities are just small quirks that have to be worked around in a lot more steps than usual, but that's about it.

Windows gets slower with time because of the dang registry that is a nasty mess of stuff that you install and uninstall that never fully gets deleted and such and it all slowly causes Windows to become a tangle of bottlenecks.

I kinda hated my lombard 333 that I got for free last year, because it was brutally slow with OS X and that was the only reason I wanted it. It was the first mac that I owned, but I knew that I liked OS X even though it was so slow on that machine. Then I picked up a G4 Cube. Free macs rule. I have a whole bunch now.

For a time, I was rather anti Mac. Well, I just would look at them longingly. I was longing for them to have right click. Prior to OS X, I really could not fit them in my life. Too many issues that forced me to stay on the PC side. I remember rushing to the library every week for my hourly slot on the Black and White Macintosh when I was a child, I remember the intrigue of them while I served as literary magazine editor in High School...but in undergraduate, despite the campus being 99.9% Apple, they did not fit in well. To many issues.
But OS X is so lovely and I am thrilled to think how many die hard PC'ers will change over.
Everytime I think of myself as a switcher, I remember that first Mac I played on. So really, I am a wayward Apple user who has returned ;)

a simple example to show the prevalent design philosophies of Apple and MS....

Apple: Clean, clear, easy to use and not overloaded

I switched 108 days ago. It took until the 107th day to really see the light and say i am a Mac convert. Hence starting this thread.
I waited 19 years for my first Mac. When I got it the first thing I did was.. well... I hugged it ok.
Then I went thru the somewhat difficult learning (unlearning?) curve of being a switcher.
Eventually I decided that all said and done, it was still just a computer.
Until the last few days.
It all just fell into place. Mac users enjoy using their computers, Windows users don't.
Another test. Compare iCal to the only 2 Windoze equivalents (i know of): Mozilla Calendar and WinDates. Especially look at the complex windows for creating events. or even just the overall look of them.
No wonder Windoze users don't like using their software - it doesn't even look good, let alone be easy to use.
ps Funnily, just to reinforce my conversion, this morning the woman I car pool with subjected me to at least 10 mins about how her PC wouldn't do what it was supposed to and how much she hates them. :)

I still have my real first mac. A G4 350. It runs GREAT[SIZE=3] under Panther. I have never had and hard drive problems. Unlike my PC which took all day to clean the HD and install everything back. After 3 months the comp was so bogged down by spyware, adware, pointless files and just MS crap I had to start over. It took all ****ing day too.
The thing I hate about XP is the ****ING registry. I HATE IT!!! You can't move files, delete, swap, backup fies, because of the registry keys! It's so annoying to have to uninstall programs, even freeware, unlike the mac just delete, move your apps where ever.
After the Clean install of XP today, Norton Antivirus ran :o Another nice thing about XP. Well it scaned over 40,000 files! 40,000 files just for the OS?! All I can say is what the ****?! Yeah that's a well built OS. Oh, I got to go defrag my HD. :o
Winboxes might be faster than the G5 but untill there is 10.3 for PC, Macs rule.

Heh, if that sig you so proudly made up is true, then why do you suppose there are some many help me posts in this forum? Microsoft doesn't make PC computers, which proofs Gates' ego is still smaller than Jobs'. Maybe one day Gates can buy the PC trade mark, ban people from using it and call all the computers The Microsoft System. Until that day, get your fact straight.

lol, I remember watching the cube commercial a long time ago and wanting "one of those computers." Naturally I didn't have the money (nor a reason) to get one until college. So it was a long wait, but worth it. I realized that I hate neither the PC or the Mac. Though I do remember having headaches all the time with the PC... whereas the only headache I get from the mac is staring at the screen too long :D (though I have been, for a few months, leaving my crt and LCD brightness turned down thus limiting my eye induced headaches)

How does MS making only software prove, disprove, or in any way relate to the size of Gates' ego? And, in general, how do the products that a company makes relate to the ego size of said companies' founder and/or current head?
I'm also unsure as what facts you are telling ChrisH3677 to get straight. He was merely sharing his personal opinions and experiences. Granted it seems to be a shared opinion in the computing community at large that Apple offers superior design, both industrial and graphical, than most hardware and software companies, but it is still a subjective call which makes it far from factual.

Thanks LethalWolfe.
FuzzyBallz, MS do make hardware and actually do it pretty well. But I was in no way meaning to compare Apple and MS on hardware.
Design doesn't just apply to hardware.
I was comparing OS and software. Given MS is best known for this, I didn't think to make that clear.
So when you compare OSX to XP or Apple software to MS, eg iMovie to MovieMaker, Safari to IE, Mail to Outlook Express, Keynote to Powerpoint, or generally any Apple software to any MS software (on Windows), Apple rightly has an industry wide reputation for a better designed OS and better designed software. I read plenty of PC magazines and when they do look at OSX or Apple software (eg Final Cut), they usually rate them very highly.
Leet1, true it is a generalization, but one I'm happy to standby, especially for non-techies.
I had a PC support business for a few years, and the slogan on my business card was:
"People are not computer illiterate, computers are people illiterate."
Why? because I was so often encountering people beating themselves up for being computer illiterate, when most of the the time it was because of poorly designed Windows or software on it.
I reckon Apple are still a long way ahead of MS in making a people literate OS.

MS hardware and their mac drivers are some of, if not the best in their class.
I use a simple MS Wireless Optical Mouse - two + clickable scroll and the thing can be configured so neatly that its truly amazing what can be done when the drivers are good.
MS Software - well - i think they model the size of the code from gate's net worth - a 2:1 model.
MS makes good software when everything is taken into account - they run on a hellofa lot more configs and machine than OSX does. Office is decent - slow, yess- but decent while excel is frighteningly powerful.
MS is not a bad company or software manufacturer - they are just not a good one either by OUR standards.
If I ever hear you knock MS hardware without photographic of videographic evidence ………………………

Personally, the only time I've hated a Mac was when doing a project on a 7600 with MacOSX 7.6, used to bomb six or seven times a day! Even a clean reinstall wouldn't fix it; probably a dud component, even though the RAM was Apple installed.
I know a few people who hate the Mac though, a classmate in university hated Macs because they didn't have a "#" symbol on the keyboard - which is used quite a bit in C programming. It might sound daft, but if you don't know Key Caps is the application you're looking for, or where to find it...

I did in the pre-OSX days. I had a bondi blue and spent more time pushing the little pin hole reboot it because it locked up. Hardly ever got the chance to turn it off the normal way. It was constantly locking up, couldn't multitask well, everytime I tried to copy a file across the network the machine would be completely unresponsive until it finished, it couldn't have more than one IP address at the same time (so no dialing in and also being connected to the local network at the same time), etc., etc. It was a terrible example of the Mac platform when I was using NT and then Windows 2000 on the other side. I am completely amazed when I see folks who still long for the OS9ish days, I don't think they remember what it was like.
Now that OS X is relatively mature and has fixed all those problems, I think I'm pretty platform agnostic. I like things about both, and nothing particularly bothers me about either.

I guess that I'd be closest to hating my Mac.
G4 Dual GHz MDD - windtunnel. It sits noisily under my desk, probably vacuuming up dust bunnies. It all started when I took it out of the box and started it up: the first thing that happened was it kernel panicked. Twice. Welcome to Macintosh.
After settling the bugs out, I started to like it. Until I realized that Core Audio took away something that I'd come to rely on: 16 channel recording...I'd have to boot into OS 9 to do that. Fun, fun. On projects that require less than 9 tracks, I do fine in OS X, except that there's some things that I could do before that I can't do in X: Audio freaks out if I'm not playing something through channel 1/2...go figure. (This could be a driver problem though and not related to Mac or the OS).
I stuffed 4 hard drives into my machine, after a week, one of them would constantly overheat and I had to pull it out and purchase a FW case. In switching the drive over, there was some kind of freak thing where my finder suddenly froze up, I had no choice but to reboot....doing that killed 105 GB of video on my FW drive.
My DVD-ROM drive burned up before my warranty expired, but I didn't get to call until about a week after. After spending $2500 on a machine, Apple wouldn't replace a $50 drive because it was a couple of days out of warranty. (This was my fault, though).
My ATI video card would flip out after my machine went to sleep. Apple wouldn't replace it, I had to send it to ATI before I could get it replaced (that's being without a video card for 15 days!)
I have two different DV cams: a Canon and a Sony. The Sony works fine everytime. The Canon will work, but audio doesn't sync up (I've spent MANY MANY hours debugging this). I have lots of problems using the Canon...it corrupts the firewire buss and there's no way to reset it except for a reboot (that I know of). The Canon seems to gum up the entire works, I cannot use any other FW gear while that's in use....it doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but I need to get work done, so I'll do it.
Firewire fun: I have a lot of FW gear. To put it in a nutshell: Hotswappable my butt! Almost every time I need to use a piece of FW gear, I need to restart. Sometimes I get lucky and will have an uptime of 20 days or more. I'm working on the magic sequence of making everything work together, so far, powering down, turning all FW gear on and powering up seems to work (except for the Canon DV cam). I'm hoping that it's just the DV cam mucking up the works....but still, it shouldn't be doing that; Apple supports using Canon cams.
I don't know what Apple's deal is, but there must be some difficult issues with Firewire. I can't stand it when my machine goes to sleep while my iPod is plugged in => The message "Do Not Connect" won't go away...if I was a true idiot, I'd never be able to use my iPod, but dammit, it's going to get disconnected/rebooted one way or another!
Lastly, with installing Panther, I've never had to endure so many spinning pizzas of death....mostly due to disk access issues.
Call me an idiot if you must, I'm not doing anything that I shouldn't be doing with my machine except for pushing it to its limits. I've owned an Apple for the last 12 years, and this machine has, by far, given me the most fits. I've worked with PC's and I know enough to hate them more. I'd jump ship to Linux in a heartbeat if they had good apps like the ones I'm using now, but I don't see that happening for a good number of years. I just can't wait to get rid of this G4 and start over with something with a little less audible prescence.
Don't get me wrong, there's things I like about my Mac: I can surf the web with no problems and Mail works just fine. But if that's all I did, I'd still be using my G4 450.

I'm not sure if this counts but I absolutely HATED my Color StyleWriter Pro, it always decided to stop working when you absolutely needed it. Now I think that technically since it was license from Canon it wasn't an Apple product, but I still hold Apple responsible for the nightmares that one caused.
Come to think of it the LC 575 that I had when I had the StyleWriter wasn't that great either. It was a pain to lug around, the sound quality was awful and the damn thing loved to crash.
I had an amazing Quadra 660AV and a few PC laptops after that. I absolutely hated all the laptops, they were invariably heavy, loud, with tiny screens and very easily breakable. My first Mac laptop was a Pismo G3 and I absolutely fell in love with it. Great machine, huge screen (for the time), fast and stable. However, it had to go back to Apple for repairs LOTS of times, the power port in the back came loose several times and needed to be resoldered, once the hard drive failed, another time the logic board failed, finally, after 4 years the screen started to get this nasty flickering problem so I broke down and got myself a TiBook. I've only had the TiBook for a few months but I absolutely love it.

I'm spending more hours dealing with my Canon DV losing audio sync. Here's what I found: I captured 40 minutes in OS 9.2.2. It all sync'd perfectly. I rebooted in OS X (Panther) and the audio sync in the same file is all messed up. What's the difference? Operating system and quicktime. My Mac hasn't changed, only Apple has changed the software. I'm hating Apple. I was doing a 'video present' for my family....now it's ruined my holiday.
OK, so my opinion is changed: I Love My Mac. I Hate Apple.
