alright, i'll start a topic that's been conspicuously absent:college football BCS system.

here's an idea:

-play the regular season as now.
-after the regular season (ending beg. of dec.), a week later, play the champion of big east against the best non-major conference champion.
-take the following 6 teams: champions of big ten, big xii, sec, acc, pac ten and the winner of the prev. game.
-bowl games as it is now for all the teams except the 6 above.
-take the two best teams from the 6, they are seeded and get byes.
-play the 4 vs. 5 and 3 vs. 6 a week before the new year
-play the 4/5 vs. 1 and 3/6 vs. 2 as two of sugar/fiesta/rose/orange bowls on new years day.
-a week later, play the winners of the prev. week in the championship.

the only problem is that the BCS has four bowls, but above takes only three...

BCS is pretty awful, it doesn't respect the tradition of bowls yet it still fails to be a playoff.

for example, this year, it would be miami (which is going to ACC, making big east weaker) vs. miami of ohio for the play-in.

oklahoma would be out because it couldn't even win its own conference.

before new year games would be michigan (#3) vs. one of the miami's (#6) and kansas st. (#4) vs. florida st. (#5).

new year's day, play michigan/miami vs. lsu, ksu/fsu vs. usc.

winner plays a week later...

edit: of course, the other way is to just junk the idea of national championship altogether. i sort of like the idea of all big-ten and pac-ten teams playing to be the rose bowl champions... nothing more... because there's nothing better!
