I purchase 8 PowerMac G4's in a surplus sale at my school. I am trying to get a little project started with kids. I found in Torrent a OS9 disk and works. My problem is as follows:
1) On G4-400 mhz with a DVD the disk read and boots ok, but after I use the disk utilities and "initialize the Disk" and install the OS the system doesn't boot from the hard drive, and when I boot from the CD I can only see in the HD the install report.

2)The other 7 machines are G4-466 Mhz with CDRW drivers, but on those when I boot and hold "function" the screen comes up but doesn't show the CD.

Does anyone has any ideas what is going wrong?

First thing I'd try to get OS 9 to install properly is running Disk First Aid from the install CD. If it finds errors, have it fix 'em. If it can't, just wipe the disk clean and try again.

You are trying to use illegal software?

You are trying to use illegal software?
Since the G4's all include Mac OS 9 when they were shipped I would say the software is not illegal since each machine is licensed for Mac OS 9 by Apple. Just like if you buy a Dell that does not include the Windows CD install CD, just the factory backup garbage, and you clean install the same version Windows from a friends OEM CD using your Dells OEM license key stuck on the computers side. Now if the OP downloaded Mac OS X that would be a non-licensed OS. Well depending on when the 466mhz ones were sold they could have included the useless 10.0.

However the 400mhz model either came with 8.6 or 9 depending on the model so to the OP if the 400mhz is not a Gigabit ethernet G4 then please use 8.6 or buy a used copy of Mac OS 9.

1. Until I know what model of G4 the 400mhz one is I can not offer any advice for OS 9.

2. What version of OS 9 are you using? The 466 I had was always finicky with OS 9 CD some of mine would work some would not. The minimum is Mac OS 9.1.

We're pretty clear in the rules about not allowing warez'd software.

Despite the computer originally coming with n version of Mac OS, if the computer was purchased without the associated software, then getting that software illegally via a torrent doesn't clear the end user of any legal obligation to purchase the appropriate software.
