Heh glad ya liked the color :)
I tried not to crop out the skies in em too much, since I really loved the color, and I thought the color would sort of carry the color...
Here's to hoping I can check out an ibook, digital camera, and Airport extreme over holiday break!! :)

you should try a 2 or 3 second exposure of your tree with the lights off. it might be really cool looking with the "snow". the room lights off, that is, tree lights on.

Yeah I like to bring out colors in images that you can't see with your eyes, it's fun...yours reminds me of a monet painting :D
Mike, your night shot from page 12 of thread 7 reminded me of a few shots I have on 35mm....
Tazo, nice blue...your blue reminds me of a black in one of my pictures....well really it's more of the look of the cage picture that resembles it...it was a shot I posted in like thread 2...it'll be up on my website not too long from now, when it is I'll let you know...

We bought ours at a place where they wrap the tree in plastic that slides up and down the tree, but is closed at the botton. That way we can just slide it up to take it in, slide it down and put a Christmas tree mat over the plastic. Then, when Christmas is over, we slide it back up and take it out. Overall, not very much gets on the carpet, but you do have to vaccuum afterwards.

It's actually a signature burrito at the restaurant where I was shooting. It's got chicken & spinach in it, wrapped in a spinach tortilla. The assignment was for a "savory" food shot of this particular dish. ;)

add a   (or just a space) between "Click" and the link "here" on all the thumb pages.
maybe instead of nature and wildlife, use "flora" and "fauna". for close-up try "macros", "urban" instead of city life.
i like your bg color in index2, why not carry that color throughout the site, either as the bgcolor or as the font color. i might also make your font in the thumbs pages a bit more substantial, maybe a <b>.
i also might shrink the about, news... part a bit. maybe 50%.
your links page is a different bgcolor than your index2. close, but no cigar.
but, besides my nitpicking, i like it. the roll overs are nice. i may steal the diea from you and use them like that on my site.

ah- good call. you're right. when i cover up the surrounding areas of the sun, it is not all that light. it is actually much darker in color than i thought. when you surround it with the contrasting sky, it is quite a difference, hence the perceived brightness.

Oh yeah, and I just finished updating all that stuff you mentioned idkew, pretty tedious work :) Had to remake all the galleries with the diff background color, text color, matching the different pages's background colors to the index page's, remaking the header images to be the right color [match the bakcground] ...

nice clean site tazo...a few things though:
there's a huge table taking a lot of space in you secondary pages (news, about, etc.); kill it.
also in your secondary pages...the title still has the old color in the closed sections of the letters (damn it's been too long since i took typography...what is that part called...damn).
and you can make your email address clickable...what are you using to write your html? and for that matter how are you making your images (titles)? just curious.
peace.
tazo
Dec 17, 2003, 03:35 PM
hi neut,
I dont know why the inside parts of the letters would have the old color  I edited them in photoshop, selected the old color from [range], and then had it fill with the right bg color. I will take a look at them tho and edit them if necessary.
Thanks for the comments on the site, and I will look into the table comment, although I am unsure what you mean...
EDIT:
I just edited the contact page to have a clickable link for my email, I don't know why I didnt have it like that in the first place :)
neut
Dec 17, 2003, 03:45 PM
what i meant by the table is that there seems to be something pushing all the content way down in the page...i have to scroll way down to see the news, links, etc. i thought it was a table but it seems to be the breaks ("</ br> </ br> </ br> </ br> </ br>" Yikes!). a bit too many ;)
btw- the color in the images could just be an optical illusion too :)
peace.
tazo
Dec 17, 2003, 03:49 PM
I think the problem is that the </ br> tag only works in some browsers :( in firebird/mozilla variants it only displays a max of 3 </ br>'s, in IE, and safari in particular, it displays about 40 :)
I will edit the page to have like 2 <p> tags, that is a cross-platform tag and would have basically the same effect.
EDIT: I updated the 'bottom' pages to omit the like twelve </ br> tags :) There is now 2 </ br>s and a <p> tag in their place :)

Also, as a joint Christmas and B-Day present (My B-Day's only on the 4th of Jan) I might be getting a nice new D-SLR, currently the competition is the Canon 10D and the Nikon D100.

New "Painting With Light (http://www.benjamin-nau.com)" photos uploaded and ready for viewing on my site.
I will post a couple below.
The story behind these:
I was sitting in Chicago rush hour, leaving town on 290 (as you Chicagoans can tell) and I decided to at least occupy myself. Did the same on the way back in town. I took about 200 shots with shutter speeds of <1 second to 15 seconds. All different apertures. Selected 30 or so to post on my site after some light photoshopping of levels and saturation. Tried my best to hold the camera steady.
BTW- I welcome any and all criticism of my works and any ideas to help make it better.

Somebody say moonrise? [well sort of...]
http://boycottbuymusic.com/photo/a3.jpg
Snowy,
I can't have a sig anymore because I abused my privelege, by writing instigating and provocative statements of personal opinion in my sig. Such views in sigs were not to be tolerated by the admins and I can understand their dismay with my behavior.
After all, what happens when someone writes something hateful in their sig, and they have 3000 posts? Suddenly the signature is a pretty big medium of harassment. My message in my sig was not harassing, but it was provocative. Think anti-political correctness statements...

I found this one fun, since it had the reflection of two other candles in the background...

Thank you Backtothemac. My wife and I love candles. My problem is getting them to burn correctly. The multiple ones are especially difficult. Do you have any suggestions on the subject?

Well, those candles were in our clubhouse last night for a party. I used the full 7x zoom, and engaged Macro. Instead of Program, I had the F stop at 3.5, shutter, at 1/40th. I did it without a tripod, but I would have loved to have one, so I could have opened the shutter up a bit more. 1/8th would have given a nice wave of the flame.
I am just really learning how to do the photography, I have only had the camera for about a month and a half. So, I am learning, Eye, Duke, and Tazo would probably have better ideas.
One thing that was neat about last night, is that the shot was in a brightly lit room. But by closing down the shutter, it made the room look dark, and really bring out the candle itself.

Never eyelikeart, thank you. ;) I always enjoy a fire. It brings back fond memories from my childhood. My father would use our fireplace a lot in the winter. Ocassionally he would use it to cook. It also made a great addition to the Chrismas season decorations.
Just to ask the question again does anyone know how to burn multiple and single candles properly. They don't seem to burn in the center properly. I do try to keep the wick trimmed.

I'll be brief...Nice shots everyone ;)
I bet you guys wonder where I've been....I've been busy lately, just glad the thread hasn't closed and moved on already :)....I went to my gf's chrsitmas formal dance (so she's still in HS so sue me :))...after all our plans screwed up I followed one of our friends to her house which we had no idea how to get to...she was speeding and like two seconds before I was going to call her to tell her to slow down because I've heard about the speed traps in her area we friggin' hit one. We both got the same speeding ticket except I also got yet another following too closely citation because she had stopped more agressively than I had and so it looked like I was on her ass when, in reality I had been trying to keep up while not obviously speeding my ass off....so yesterday sucked for us :( that's 245 dollars I have less to spend on camera equipment and the like....it ruins my christmas which also pissed me off because he was like be careful it's a holiday weekend and I was thinking:
1. No, it's the weekend before a holiday later on in the week...and
2. If it's a holiday that's supposed to be about being nice, why would a cop be such an asshole to give me a ticket to ruin my christmas, especially when I blatantly told him I was following her and had no idea where I was going...I mean he even knew by my license that I lived like 50 miles away....
What's really annoying is that I'm driving my car, which isn't a really expensive car but it is a nice car and I'm dressed well so he obviously thinks man this must be some rich kid or something...living off of dad's money so he obviously can afford to pay that...after I signed the tickets I should have been like I hope you're happy, I'm not even done christmas shopping...I have 6 bucks to my name (if I close my bank account otherwise probably like 1.60) and someone owes me 78 dollars for a job I did....so now I'm 160 dollars in the hole...thanks asshole, people like you ruin christmas...I felt like driving 17 miles under the speed limit to get caught and give them my ticket to call it even...geez, you have to be such an asshole to be a speed trap cop....
The guy that pulled her over asked her why she didn't pull over sooner...the only other place was a fire station and he suggested going there....if some cop had told me that I'd probably be like well then you'd give me a ticket for parking in a fire lane and if they had to leave I'd have to leave :D
Anyway, on a lighter and brief note, here's me and the rest of the good fellas (note I'm not the only college guy...señor blur face is my best friend who graduated a year before me (though we should have graduated at the same time and he's a year younger than I) everyone to our right graduated with me) ;)

My father got his Canon 300D today, and I thought I might try it a little. I've never taken a lot of pics before, but I have some knowlegde when it comes to understanding the optics, physics, and how the camera work in general. It was really cool, and I really want a digital SLR sometime, but right now being a poor student, I can't afford any more than my new G5 :D
So anywho, here's the pics! Hope you like them. And please keep in mind that these are my first DSLR photos.
http://www.teamg5.com/img/div/piano.jpg
This is a picture of our grand piano. It was really dark so I used a 10 sec exposure time. I like the results because the lack of shadows and normal lightning, making the grand piano look like it's a rendered 3D object...
http://www.teamg5.com/img/div/glass.jpg
Here I used F 5.6 and 8 sec exposure time to minimize the depth and blur in the image. I tried with a F 36 / 1/4 sec exposure as well, but I forgot to use the timer and shook the camera so the result was terrible. This one look quite cool though.

That's cool! I remember that I tried something similar once, but the result was disappointing...
BTW, that's a Kawai or an older Yamaha piano? :D
Maybe you should try with a bigger apperature opening and set the focal point a little further behind in the picture to add more depth? Just a suggestion. ;)

hey everyone, i have a suggestion.
since i can only set my display to 1152x768 at the largest, and I am sure there are others in my situation, could we all agree to post pictures no wider than say, 800px and taller than 600px?
I only complain because it is annoying draggin back and forth when reading posts, since the widest picture in the page sets the width of the table.
So- I suggest a max resolution of 800x600. Anyone with me on this one? Or am I asking too much?

Get a NEW PowerBook!! :D J/K of course....the only thing I don't agree with is the 600 vertical max, howabout we do like an FM submission? 640 for the longest edge? That's pretty much what I've been trying to stick with...

I took some pics today as well. We're having a drop in temerature here now, and when I got this pic the temp was approximately -8 degrees Celcius, or 17.6 F. That's causing all the fog and making the landscape look pretty amazing. Too bad I'm recovering from a flu and can't go outside to shoot pictures like that, so I had to do it through a window... And the shot is taken from 3rd floor in my house, btw.

640 is not bad... lets also hear what others have to say. i want this to be in agreement instead of one pushing something upon others.
i do think we can go wider than 640 though.

That's taken from your house? And you have three floors? Damn dude, have the flu all the time and just look out the window....I don't know why but I get the flu every few years and each time, for me at least, it's been less of a pain, for some reason it never hits me hard like it does others, I've not changed a single thing in my daily routine, I still drive with the windows open when it's below 50 outside (I live in FL give me a break :)) I still do everything, I don't like to tell others that the flu isn't that big of a deal because I guess to some it is but for me I can't see why people stay at home and don't go to work/school because of it....oh well....however I do call people idiots who request antibiotics from doctors when they have a cold....when will people learn that antibiotics are for bacteria and not virii!?
BTW your site looks a lot like http://www.elfincreative.com/...

Dec 24, 2003, 06:01 AM
Well, first of all, I'm never sick. Only this year I had the flu twice, with a lot of fever and a lot of headache. But it takes me only a couple of days to recover, and I never take drugs when I might be sick. Only a paracet or two when I get the flu. But I could never pretend not being sick when I've got the flu, because it hurts to much. I don't think I'm used to pain since I usually don't get sick in any way. BTW, we got 15 degrees here now, so I better just stay inside. Especially now since I was sick just a couple of days ago.
That elfinteractive.com homepage looks a lot like mine... ;) Allthough mine is a bit darker and vivid. I need to do something about the opening animations, since I don't really like them myself, heh.
And lastly, but not least, have a merry Christmas!

Macmumm, I really like the composition in your second hydrant shot, the rims are nice too as shadowfax said....I like the angle on it too, you should reshoot that shot and put it up on this weeks WA on FM....
idkew, that second sign is freaking hilarous! :D
Here's a shot from about 6:00 this morning...

Actually, at around 4 when my mom was leaving I went out to my car to grab a CD to rip and a car was backing up into my driveway to turn around and something in the bushes jumped as I advanced...my mom thinks it was probably a deer....I promptly went inside and grabbed one of my knives and the mag lite that's usually in my car....nothing was there....probably was a deer...but hell, at my house anything can pop out of anywhere...I think I'm going to make a B&W copy of it...
DVW86, I like the composition it might be better cropped closer though :)

This is a picture that my Dad took from his front yard. There has been no Photo Shop or other enhancements done to the picture.

This isn't a holiday picture, but I thought that I would show you some of my handy work. I made the knife and took the picture.

Did you make the blade itself too or was it from a blank? I'm thinking about getting into forging swords and knives :D I pretty much do everything when it comes to art so I figure why not...

That car looks to be in relatively good shape. It looks similar to a car that my Dad had gowing up. Is that a 50's model car?

It's a 1949 Chevy. When I parked it, it still ran and drove well. I figure it would cost about $10,000 to restore it to decent condition.

That is a very nice living room shadowfax. It looks like your parents are also into art and books. That is definitely a room to be proud.

yeah, my dad is. the left wall is all vermeer... the leftmost is his favorite, girl with a pearl earring. he sent the next one, the pregnant woman reading a letter from her lover, when my mother was pregnant and he was on a two month sabbatical in eastern europe (his first vacation, at the time, in like 4 years)... then the little tiny painting on the right is MY favorite, "Don Quixote" by Honoré Daumier. my dad also loves fancy leatherbound books, as you can see...
anyways... sorry about the OT.
