A few recent titles that actually run acceptably on the Mac:
Giants: Citizen Kabuko
Freedom Force
Sacrifice (seems to work best in Jaguar or greater with ATI cards).
All three are cheap and were highly rated in their day. Plus, you can run them at maximum settings today and they look and perform great!

FPS:
Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
RPG:
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
RTS/Strategy:
Most likely Warcraft III, though I'm not a giant fan of the genre.
Platformer:
Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
Runners-Up:
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Unreal Tournament 2k3
No One Lives Forever
Age of Empires 2
Any Simcity, namely 2000 because it was the best of the series.

Halo is good. Brood War and Warcraft II/III are all solid. There are plenty :)

Do you have both patches installed for OSX and 10.3? (If you ever have 10.3, that is)

Also, try running if software mode if you have to. It's worth it to have to get rid of the acceleration to actually get to PLAY the game.

I am shocked and appalled that no one has mentioned Civilizations III!!! Or II for that matter.
IMO Starcraft is a close second, especially considering it's age.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is also highly worth playing.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein. afterall it does have a great online game and you can play the single player for hours. If not this game then UT2003. dissapointed with Halo's crappy interface, not the smoothest game play and not being able to use your control, command or option keys just goes to show how microsoft can screw up anything mac = another crappy port.

It doesn't quite on me. But it freezes like crazy. Not usually during gameplay, but when trying to join a game or logon to b.net it just stops. So i force quit and start it up again, and it usually works fine, I dunno why. And I do have the patches.

Ghost Recon has been a strong favorite since it was released. Y'know GR is good when you play other FPSes and you hit 'C' twice to drop prone and end up standing up again :) Or when you try to peak around a corner in Medal of Honour and just find yourself in the opening getting shot 20 times before you die. Ergh. Unfortunately, the engine isn't great -- so I'm looking forward to buying Raven Shield.
Best *Mac* game of all time is Marathon. Fersure. Halo captures some of the gameplay but not the level design (Halo's level design just isn't that good) nor the fear (hard to be afraid of aliens that mimic bobs).

Age of Mythology is pretty addicting. I got it when it was released, and it hasn't left my combo drive. Age of Empires is a close second. And Warcaft III is pretty cool, but I finished the game pretty quick.

I think the scariest Mac game has to be Undying, or maybe the original Aliens v. Predator.

No-one racing out there?
I love Nascar Racing 2003 (need a Force feedback steering wheel to make it really fun though)
Otherwise:
Medal of Honour
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
And one more thing...
The mutiplayer mode of Carmageddon 2! Really really fun to race your friends or colleagues while being able to kill them on your way, ha ha. :D

Ugh...don't even get me started on how DX2 killed what might have been a wonderful franchise.
The console-ization of games is the worst thing to happen to the PC/Mac gaming world since Daikiatana.

You're right! Deus Ex was great!
I think the best strategy game is Total Annihilation. I have spent so many hours with it, and I still play it under classic enviroment sometimes.
And Soldier Of Fortune II was a pretty nice FPS too!

WipEout 2097 because it is fast and playable on any Mac since the iMac. Unlike most racing games, the keyboard is a great way to control the race vehicles. The in-game speeds are impressive and the framerate constant at whatever setting you choose. The only problem is that there is no built-in server browser and the game is not compatible with GameRanger. Oh well, we can't have everything.
