I would have stuck this at the bottom of the other thread, but someone closed it as I was typing it.

Here is why people call it an iTouch: Syllables.

iPod, 2
iPod Nano, 4. Nano means very small (1 billionth).
iPod Shuffle, 4. Shuffle, an action
iPod Classic, 4. Classic, a period in time.
iPod Photo, 4, Photo. Take my Photo.

All the above flow. Even numbers.

iPod Touch, 3. Doesn't flow. Odd number.
iTouch, 2. Flows. Even number.

If they had called it the iPod TapIt, people would be using "iPod TapIt" or "Tapit", but not iTapIt.

Apple screwed up by giving it a 3 syllable name. "Touch" by itself isn't so bad for only one syllable. But since it's a more common english word we inherently consider a sense rather than a device, leaving it alone is difficult. The obvious thing left in Apple's iWorld is "iTouch".
