i had the thought to pick up a used 1st generation iphone so as to avoid signing a 3 year contract (canada) but ebay prices are outrageous for them even with the, now not so recent, release of the iphone 3g.

who is buying these things at prices higher than the $199/299, for a used, old tech. phone? it doesn't make sense to me.
yes, if it comes to it i'm going to pick up the 3g, for now i'll try to wait it out a little longer to see if prices become reasonable.

Because it's pretty much impossible to get a 3G iPhone unlocked to use with any SIM. To get an iPhone 3G in most cases you have to sign a contract, which then you have to cancel it to sell the phone or pay the data price for 2 years. It isn't worth it. 1st gen iPhones are more common, but still rare. They don't sell first gen iPhones anymore, so there are only basically 6 million possible unlocked iPhones in the world.

Sorry that looks like a slur of words.

Because as of right now, AFAIK, they are the only iPhones that can be used on other carriers. That and people just like to blow money I guess.

What do you think is a fair price for the first gen?

So the couple of minutes you'd save by not going to the post office or UPS store or whatever isn't worth fetching about $150 - $200 more for your iPhone eh?

You can print out a prepaid label and have the delivery guy pick it up for you. Or if you've got a mailroom at work, have them ship it for you.

You should try to sell it for more!!!
A couple of my friends wanted to buy mine for (at least) $350, but mine was already sold on ebay...

Tell them that they're really expensive on ebay, therefore.... you should get at least $300 for it :D

Actually that's wrong, you can use AnySim which does unlock the 3G IPhone but isn't free. Also you pay for the first month if you cancel + ETF, not the 2 years.

I've looked at them and the average is $250 to $350. A lot being bought up overseas.

You'll fetch more if you take good pics of your iPhone and opt for the extra large photos in ebay. Bidders want to make sure the used iPhone isn't scratched and scuffed to hell.

I agree $250 to $300 is about the going price.

I wouldn't pay more than that and those first gen iphone better in mint condition.

I sold my mint condition for $325 2 months ago.

I can't believe people would pay more than $300 especially for phones that are not in warranty anymore.

i'd go like $200 shipped for 8gb & $300 shipped for 16gb in good condition. not interested in paying more than the new price for the old phone. if someone has one at that price and wants to sell they're welcome to pm me.

What he said. Nobody in their right mind on an AT&T plan is doing this. It's people elsewhere, especially in non-iPhone countries, that are unlocking them. Supply and DEMAND!!!! at its finest.

Send me some pictures, if its in good condition I'll pay you 200 bucks for it and mail you the stuff for you to mail it back to me. All you would have to do is drop it off in any UPS pick up box. If need be I can direct you to one of those as well.

I'll then turn around and sell it for 400 bucks. :)

Since the OP has taken this thread in the direction of soliciting sales outside the marketplace, this thread is done.
