I think it's very likely, it's why I'm keeping my upgrade for the next generation. I don't want to be stuck in an 18 month contract this time when a more meaningful upgrade is probably coming.

Ooooh yea, wow, no one saw this coming. A new version to a great product line? Thats never happened.

Here's another prediction: iPhone 3, by 2011.

Amazing...

Yeah ok. It's like a car the manufacturer screw up one year and you hope they get it right the next. If they make the right advancements I WOULD probably upgrade every time. Sorry if your unable to do that.

MacRumors (http://www.macrumors.com/)

So what are we looking for OP?

Last sentence of the first rumor.

"Finally, the analyst [Maynard Um] points to additional iPhone colors to be launched in time for this year's holiday season as well as a brand new iPhone in the first half of 2009."

I'm pretty doubtful about this. first half of 2009? No wai, THe only possiblity would be a larger HD, but not a "new iPhone".

My biggest reason to doubt it is that it won't allow Apple to adequately hype it. THere just wouldnt be time to build the anticipation they built with the original iPhone and the 3G.

impact_blue
Aug 5, 2008, 11:49 AM
I'm sure they have a product road map for the iphone. First the colors, then a 32gb line next summer with a refreshed look. I honestly can't see them releasing something entirely new less than a year from now with the 3G selling faster than the EDGE iphone. They're gonna milk this current gen for all it's worth.

2008 is the year of the iphone for Apple. I think they'll bring back the focus to new macbooks and pros along with a new model [some sort of touch screen laptop or desktop?] in 2009.

As long as we can update our current phones w/ new firmware equal to what the new phone would have then i'm not that excited unless:

1. Battery life much better
2. Slimmer

I can't really think of other hardware changes that i would like.

Exactly, once the hardware is deployed, its an all-software game from then on. Except for changing the appearance of the phone, I don't know what else they could add in between now and this time next year.

I don't think the iphone 3g hardware will be deprecated in the next 24 months. It's a safe time to buy.

Besides, wasn't that rumor for a smaller phone anyway? Not a full iphone I believe...

I just don't understand the resistance to talk of a new iPhone. It makes perfect sense. Why would they stick to one model? You remember how long the MINI iPod lasted? The handset business is constantly changing and upgrading so this is not just possible it is almost a given. The only reason I can think of for people on this forum to NOT want to discuss this or to view it as a waste are those that simply feel marginalized by having already purchased the 3G. Give me a break. We should all be happy about a new model with new options. The users on this forum trouble me. They not only hate it when you post your gripes about the 3G they also get upset with the mere thought of a new and probably better model. What a small minded bunch you truly are. Go ahead wasteland my thread if it bothers you all so much.

If this has the slightest truth it wont be a NEW iPhone, it i'll be just minor upgrade like the usual memory upgrade and possible better battery. Don't hold out for another new iPhone till 2010, probably 2011. ATT hasn't even covered 50% of the USA when it comes to 3G and probably won't be 100% operational for another 2 years. After that MAYBE they will consider phones with 4G and start the iPhone 4G. This iPhone will consist of 3G/4G must like the current iPhone 3G at which has EDGE and 3G.

ipod touch.

Besides we're not talking about looks here, that would obviously not be a COMPLETELY NEW iPhone, we're talking about hardware. Also the iPhone is different from the regular product models and how they work. The iPhone upgrades every 2 years from what we have seen so far.

Yes I do hope that new iphone models come with less restrictions. Current legislation is in the works (in the USA) to remove the contrat associated with cell service. It use to be that they would make you sign for 1 or 2 years ONLY if you were taking advantage of price breaks. Now though even if you buy a phone outright they make you sign for 1 year (t-mobile).

Just to let you know signing off like that looks a bit self-important and ridiculous.

Anyway, I don't see it being completely overhauled in terms of the UI as Apple have spent a lot of time and money tweaking the current OS, which still is far from perfect. Hardware, who knows? Why the pointless sensationalist topic?

Of course there will be a new iphone next year, and the year after, and the year after ...

Next year will probably be a forward facing camera, bigger drives, better rear facing camera, better battery life, additional colors, and if something turns out to prevent this gen's GPS from working properly for turn-by-turn, a GPS improvement. The rest of it will probably be a 3.0 firmware. Hopefully next year's model doesn't change the processor so we can all upgrade to the latest and greatest firmware goodies.

I think a totally new iPhone in 2009 is quite possible and even likely. The 3G iPhone really doesn't add anything to the original iPhone other than 3G and GPS; the new firmware works on both old and new models. I think the 3G iPhone is merely a stopgap measure until they can get out a real update next year.

The main thing is that there just isn't anything to discuss. An analyst thinks there will be a new iPhone in 2009. Even if he is right (totally hit or miss with these "analysts") that could mean anything from a bigger hard drive (not all that unlikely), to a better camera (slightly less likely), to a completely different phone that is not supposed to replace the iPhone (very unlikely) to a total redesign (ridiculous). But the bottom line is that without any other information, there just isn't anything to discuss, it would just be us all making things out of thin air.

If you had something more than "(unknown analyst) thinks there might be a new iPhone in 2009.", then we might have someting to discuss.

and this:

"Hate to say I told you so but.....

why not just wait till for the 4th gen phone etc. when you put comments like that no one will care about your post. why should they? what's sad is once the 3rd gen comes out, someone will prob post the same exact crap you just posted about waiting for the 4th gen.

Agreed.

Also, xploit if you wanted a discussion try an opening question like "what features would you want on a 2009 iPhone"

The reason people wanted a link is to discuss the information.

It's difficult to engage discussion (but easier to be flamed) when you insult other people.

I'm in total agreement with this. I think the firmware updates are enough excitement for me. It's like getting a new phone every time!

As for the "slimmer" comment, I thought the 3G was already too slim. The 1st gen has a great solid feel but can be a bit slick at times. I had a touch before the iPhone and that was uncomfortably slim...

Right now, I can't really think of any important features they could add that would justify my purchase a new iPhone in 2009

The only features I really want right now are only software limitations which can be fixed easily

No thanks
