ok there have been so many cool little things i have done to personalize my iphone...i have a 5 icon dock i have a ton of themes..and i have got so many apps that cost money in the app store but free in jailbreak example : frogger..band..bejeweled ...south park...i can change my carrier to what ever i want right now its lillybeth ( my girlfriends name).. there is so much more you can do also.cant wait for more stuff to come out

I'm with you. I had a 1st gen iPhone and have a 3G now that I bought on launch day. I had always been afraid to mess up my phone. Well, after doing some research I found out it is REALLY hard (not impossible) to mess up your phone in a way that you can't recover. Additionally, at any point you can restore it to "factory settings" none the worse for wear.

The amount of customizations and jailbreak ONLY apps makes it a no-brainer for me. Not suggesting it's the thing to do for everyone, but it's really, really cool to be able to expand and open up the possibilities with an already super cool phone.

I've got a 3g iphone and am considering jailbreaking. Besides customisine the interface etc, id like to know what other stuff I can do with a jailbroken phone. I'm not really into games, but for example would like to be able to edit Word documents, or have a calender with icons in the month view. Is there a site where I can get a better idea of what I can do with a jailbroken iphone 3g? ie. a comprehensive list of 3rd party apps?

app store you have to pay for apps ..with jailbreak the same apps that cost money in the apps store are FREE with jailbreak...like a 10$ game is free..

I just downloaded PwnageTool to test on my (now old) iPod Touch, decided that I was not going to do it on my iPhone 3G... then this thread appeared in the forum and now I am going for it!

There are only 2 things that I am JailBreaking for... both of them exist on my 5 year old Windows Smartphone.

They are: The ability to run apps while the phone is locked (insomnia) and the ability to share my internet connection with my laptop (3Proxy) (I was out of the country when NetShare was released, so didn't get it!)

If Apple just put these basic features on the iPhone in the first place, I would have no real need to do what I'm about to do...

EDIT: Jailbreak with either ZiPhone or Pwnage tool. I used ZiPhone, though have heard of reported instabilities.

I will give you a bit more detailed way to do so...you can jailbreak through pwnage 2.0.2. then once you have cydia app and installer app.. download winterboard from cydia then search though all packages in cydia for winterboard themes ..then you might have to restart your iphone for changes to take affect ..and look at the other forum iphone hacks and apps to add sources for cydia and installer to get more packages ...

thanks. i had my 16g jailbroke with ziphone when i had 1.1.4 but after i upgraded i tried pwnage and i never got it to work. kept telling me i failed. so i just stopped trying. guess ill wait till its easier. but i enjoyed my iphone way more jailbroke on 1.1.4 then i have 2.0. there are a few cool apps like labrynith but a handful at best. the installer apps are great. intelliscreen is the best thing since sliced bread. and the laggy text make me want to jump of a cliff.

It took me like five times before I got it to work properly. Do you own a Mac or a PC?

i have a macbook. everytime i did it it would built the little box of stuff then tell me i fail and never do it. when i finally got it to download when i tried manually putting it in itunes i would restore and it would start then it would crash.

The only way to screw the phone up is interrupting the unlock procedure. This also only applies to 1st generation. Just use pwnage and do expert mode. Believe me, you do not need to be an expert to use expert mode. Make sure to deselect the "activate" option under the general settings and deselect the custom boot and recovery mode logo. Then just build the image and put the phone in DFU mode. Let iTunes see it in recovery, option click restore, choose your custom image and your good to go. Remember you HAVE to use DFU mode. I have yet to hear of pwnage screwing up a 3G phone. It does such a base level hack that I don't think it possible for pwnage to break the new 3G. Even with the 1st generation you need to be a real idiot to screw things up.

yeah use 2.0.2 ...and i heard that its IMPOSSIBLE if your just jailbreaking your phone..but not sure about unlocking

I had not ever had a reason to jailbreak my phone. Nothing available was anything that I found necessary... until now.

Changing the name of my carrier to Lillybeth is a must have so I am going to go jailbreak my phone, and then I am going to steal the OP's girlfriend, and then I am going to change my carrier to Lillybeth.

FYI some developers released applications for jailbroken phones for free before they released them on the app store.

That being said I think all apps had to be redone and anything on the app store can not be given away for free. So while it is possible someone is running an old jailbreak phone with legitimate free copies of software now sold in the app store, it is not likely.

Yup, just restore it in iTunes like you usually would, and everything has been undone.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not encouraging it, but stealing from a shop and making a copy of a digital file are not the same thing - for starters, the item in a shop cost the shop keeper when it was stolen. The only thing that the developer loses is a potential sale (no money directly).

I've just installed and configured 3PROXY on my iPhone 3G; I currently only have GPRS coverage and it is surprisingly fast on my MBP - It just shows how much the iPhone slows it down by not being able to process the web pages that fast (again, don't get me wrong; it's good for a phone, but nothing compared to a laptop) :D

I'm thinking about jailbreaking so that I can download podcasts on the go. That would be the only reason for me to do it really, but that's important to me. I have to keep a separate mp3 player around just so I can get my podcasts from a work computer onto something I can take with me, which is silly.

Very interesting point actually. I supposed (assuming the person did no damage, and didn't add to your gas/water/electricity bills) then yes, it would be like someone breaking into your house and staying there for a night.

But how about buying a phone that is locked to a specific carrier and data plan (and which this carrier subsidises) and then hacking it to run it on a different network so the original network doesn't see any of the money that they were promised?

for cydia open it up then go to manage...then click on sources the click edit..then add.. and type in the source EXACTLY as it is do this for all the sources and this will add apps and stuff to your cydia ..

for installer its the same thing open installer click sources...edit add..then and the soruce

No it does not..i didn't pay a penny for mine all i did was install kate and install rip dev.. restart my iphone went into settings go down to the bottom choose rip dev..then you choose rip dev products then pick 5 dock on thats all

for cydia open it up then go to manage...then click on sources the click edit..then add.. and type in the source EXACTLY as it is do this for all the sources and this will add apps and stuff to your cydia ..

for installer its the same thing open installer click sources...edit add..then and the soruce

99% of the cydia ones didn't work for me either Alot of the installer ones did though

This kind of attitude is precisely the reason why 95% of things on the appstore are garbage and seemingly redundant...because developers don't spend the time polishing an app to its fullest because they know there are a lot of dishonest people out there who pirate. And obviously, Vegan here has no idea what it's like to spend time developing something only to see people more than overjoyed to be able to get it for free...

Exactly. I jailbroke my old iPhone about 8 months ago and quickly got bored with it and changed it back to stock. I haven't missed it since and probably never will jailbreak again.

I like the app store. There are some amazing apps there. I have 32 apps today but only really use a handful.

Actually I'm quite the opposite. I loved it when it was JB on 1.1.4 but I've never been more dissatisfied or frustrated with this phone than I am now. Customize just sits there with the spinner when I try to browse themes and completely freezes my phone when I try to exit. Installer either locks up, crashes, or times out. I have yet to successfully install anything with installer. Cydia's the only thing that has worked for me and that's about 50% of the time.

The phone with software 2.0.1 is unstable enough without all this stuff. I'll definitely be restoring as soon as I get a chance.

Mine is JB only for intelliscreen. Btw- not all apps are free. I bought a license to use intelliscreen.

ok that is thee most stupid thing i have heard !! yes developers dont make any good apps because they know people will take them NO...i HAVE paid for alot of apps on the app store i just think the games are way overpriced as alot of the apps are.....all i have to say is TITS or GTFO

It's not that they don't make any good apps, it's that if they release something good that is getting pirated left and right, it less likely for them to put as much effort in making it even BETTER if they are getting nothing out of their hard work. And just because you think some apps/games are overpriced does not AT ALL give you the right to pirate them. Your failure is epic, enjoy getting V& for all the crap you probably pirated, which you proudly proclaimed in a public forum. :rolleyes: URDOINITWRONG!

I've been playing with both Winterboard and Customise and can't find the option in either.

No it does not..i didn't pay a penny for mine all i did was install kate and install rip dev.. restart my iphone went into settings go down to the bottom choose rip dev..then you choose rip dev products then pick 5 dock on thats all
